    If we really want to see camera makers roll out new models we have to show them there is a market for them. Glad to see this release and I just placed my order. Hope that they sell enough to make a full frame version with manual features in the next phase. I am tired by Leica being the only choice to get a brand new film camera or the second hand market. We spend a lot on film and processing, we deserve access to new

    Nice review ! Looks like a lovely camera. Never shot half frame yet. Problem is for that price, in analog photography world, you get a lot of nice secondhand cameras. But just to support Pentax and their decision to bring back new film cameras, I could buy one :) I'm waiting for the new Rolleil 35Af too !

    • @thorstenjaspert9394
      @thorstenjaspert9394 Місяць тому

      The price is high. But I think the street price will be a little lower. 550 € is a statement. It would be sad if the Pentax 17 li in the shop shelves like a brick.

    • @shotbychrisl
      @shotbychrisl  Місяць тому +4

      I understand your point, now you need to put this into perspective. This is not a second hand 30 years old camera, I have worked in the film industry and alongside camera technicians for years the amount of work you need to put to release something like this is crazy plus hire again old technicians to pass on the knowledge and so on. If Pentax was to release a full fledged SLR full metal now will retail for like £1,800-2,000 easy and everyone will say the same thing I could buy a K1000 for £250 and yes it is true but it is not a 2024 produced camera. Don’t get me wrong I completely get your point but the cameras we are buying now for no money if you think about it considering inflation and today’s productions cost will be around 10 times their price. It’s hard to compare but if we want film photography to continue this projects are the only ones to save the industry there are less and less film cameras available every year they get damaged, broken or lost and for many of them no repair parts available anymore so I think it’s a step in the right direction.

    • @chinatones
      @chinatones Місяць тому +2

      @@shotbychrisl You're 100% right about Pentax Job being a step in the right direction ! Also, maintenance/reparations of old cameras can cost a lot and technicians are getting rare. Secondhand prices are getting quite crazy too, especially for point&shoot. Let's wait and see the final price of the Rollei 35AF too.

    Bought this camera as my family/ people and street cam that I don’t have to be afraid that it unreparebly breaks…
    Since the format is economically perfect for me because with the m6 or the rz67 with full or medium format I never want to „waste“ it on people that I anyways never will print big…
    I really can’t wait as a daily notetaking and documenting cam…
    Honestly probably would have been happy with a small spycam tho lol:)
    But honestly the halfframe is perfect for anyone that doesn’t want to print A2 size
    Edit: And honestly who doesn’t want to have the experience of opening a package of a new analog camera in 2024 🤯

    • @shotbychrisl
      @shotbychrisl  Місяць тому

      This is amaaaaaazing! I love this camera for the exact same reason! I tried before shooting 110 to have a less fuss experience and the “spy camera” sort of portability. But 1 image quality drops considerably, 2 getting it developed and scanned is a pain and 3 there aren’t as many film stocks available for it so yeah… half frame is a good alternative for shoot and don’t think too much for me

    • @shotbychrisl
      @shotbychrisl  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks 🙏 well it depends there are other manufacturers making film cameras nowadays Kodak Reto makes some refillable “disposable like cameras”, then Pentax, Mint Cameras that’s about to launch their Rollei 35AF and obviously on the high end Leica. There is quite a bit of interest in the industry and the community also there are more and more commercial clients asking photographers to produce analogue work so there is definitely space in the market for it! Hopefully the Pentax project will be successful enough for them to have some future cameras developed.

    • @shotbychrisl

      Yes the lens has a motor that moves forwards and backwards depending on your chosen focusing distance. And the movement happens as you press the shutter button 😅🤷🏼‍♂️ I dunno to be honest I found it very weird too

    I think if they could price this slightly more budget friendly I would easily get this. I am saving to get a new fuji or a leica and I rather spend the money toward those than this film camera. However hope Pentax sees success and we see new formats of film come out.

    As I recall, the main drawback of film cameras was that if they malfunctioned, the film would be wasted. So what makes people drawn back to using film cameras today?

    • @shotbychrisl
      @shotbychrisl  Місяць тому +1

      Mmmm… the only drawback that films cameras have is that you have to buy film and it requires a constant investment to get new photos… there is no other draw back if you have a decent camera and keep it serviced with an actual camera technician then there should be no malfunction no film waste

    Ebay is full of beautiful 35mm film cameras, including half-frame, for 25% of the price of this. I just bought a superb condition Canon 5D for $200 that will produce stunning, film-like, images way better than this toy. If you really must go "vintage" then do it properly, and buy a real vintage camera to do it with and save yourself $400

    • @shotbychrisl
      @shotbychrisl  Місяць тому +12

      Great! Absolutely valid idea, however Ebay is full of 30 years old used cameras which in most cases come with no warranty, never been serviced, neither tested so there is some gamble there. Second a 5D is a full frame sensor digital camera that has absolutely nothing to do with film apart that you can capture images with it, the look, the feel, the process of image creation have nothing to do with anything analogue. this is not a "vintage" neither I ever mentioned the word "vintage" in the video once it is simply a film camera manufactured in 2024, which me as a film enthusiast and a person that absolutely loves film and the film community then it is a big deal.

    • @VariTimo
      @VariTimo Місяць тому +2

      @@shotbychrislCompletely agree. Film doesn’t need to be vintage. Half the films available these days are pretty modern and with a modern scanner you can get dynamic range and color you won’t get from most digital cameras. And the issues with there only being used cameras is not just that they might fail or need to be serviced but with analog photography going on they will one become more expensive as they get older and less reliable. New film cameras are one of the most important things for the medium to survive, for people to have tools they can actually rely on.
