- Here is is, in the flesh. The Rollei 35af from Mint camera. This is a real camera, not a dummy. I managed to get my hands on the only working prototype and answer a few questions about the camera. In my excitement I didn't manage to get through all of the details, but I will be shooting with it over the next week and will post a video with more details.
Some corrections: The camera does have a light meter, the lens is all glass and the price will be $799.

Ooft, hits keep comin!
I’m in! Take my $$$ 👍
Honestly, more willing to spend that than the 500 on the pentax 17
@@jacobhopkins3441 I'm with you. As much as I want to support any new film camera, I'm not going to drop $500 for a camera that I have ZERO desire to use.
Great it has a meter. That would have been an annoying oversight imo
Spoiled for choices. Thanks Mint, thanks Pentax! Let's keep NEW film cameras comin'
defo going for this, i like haalf frame but im picky about quality of image and pentax being half frame kinda bugs me
Let's all pray for a successor to the Nikon F6, imagine a film camera with modern exposure metering and super fast autofocus.
You can always spend $5600 on a brand new Leica too lol
Now...we just need to get Jeff Bridges and his team going to finalize plans and start producing NEW Widelux swing lens panoramic cameras....
Last word on that is now a couple years old I think...?
I really want that...full mechanical!
I’m much more interested in this then the Pentax
Same, full 35mm, better brighter 35mm lens and Auto Focus. This is what Pentax should have done.
@@erichramone7812 and also better looking
I initially was not interested in the Pentax 17 either. But after dealing with the quirks of some of the old and used 35mm cameras I bought on eBay, I figure maybe it’s time for me to try something new and support the cause. And besides that, it makes a great conversation piece at social events.
@@cwantuch@erichramone7812
Agreed. I wish Pentax did AF or even MF... You can see a helicoid or focus preset move around when cycling the zones, so the architecture was there! Frustrating.
Zone focus is a real gamble. For the shots you think you'll save using half frame, you'll lose due to poor focus.
It would have been a home run otherwise.
I had a Rollei 35 in the 70’s and was fortunate enough to spend a day with Ansel Adams. He was lovely and quite encouraging when I showed him the tiny camera. I will get the 35af. Should be very nostalgic.
Wow, lucky you!
Thanks so much for doing this Bellamy! Love getting a peek at this little guy!
It is fantastic. I hope you get to use one.
Mint/Rollei needs to up their marketing game. We need it on more hands of creators. Pentax did a fantastic job imo.
Wait, the camera seems HUGE compared to an original Rollei 35. Do you confirm it’s the same external size?
Looks like a brick. Definitely bigger than the OG.
I’m happy to hear that it CAN lock focus and reframe. So many great cameras have been ruined by bad focus interfaces that you’re forced to deal with and I was worried this would be the same way. But with that ability I think it saved itself
Yes, it can. It is awesome.
A lovey authentic review!! Thank You Jeremy!!
My pleasure!
So excited I too made the short list back in Feb!!
Excited to see what shots you get with it. I'm excited pentax came out with their half frame camera but I'm even more excited about this since it has autofocus.
Nice exclusive here!
Glad you like it!
Very, very excited for this! I ordered the Pentax 17 too. Bring on more of these updated classics and new ideas, like the Pentax 17, all you camera manufacturers!
A firmware update for a film camera would be insane
Really enjoyed this - well done!! Wish I could come back to Tokyo and go shopping soon!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for showing us. I hope you can post some of your photo scans from it.
I will try.
I have a Rollei 35S which I love. I shoot mainly using Hyperfocal Distance - using f8-f16 and moving the infinity symbol to the same aperture number on the lens scale to have the longest area all in focus. This to me is the difference from the original. It is like semi-manual with no lightmeter but auto focus. However I am very experienced with manual settings which is not the market for younger photographers.I think it will be very successful for anyone new to film photography who will get most film photos perfectly focused and exposed. This means they will be very excited about film photography which has to be a good thing. I wish them the very best.
I was mistaken, it actually does have a light meter.
@@japancamerahunter That's even better!
Since he uses programming, I bet an aditional switch or dail could add manual focus by overiding the lidar. Looks great, would love to get one when I see results.
Can't wait for this. Made the preorder list months back
Exciting times! Well done Mint and JCH!
Center weighted meter, or spot or average? AE lock? Any readout of exposure in the viewfinder? TTL? Thank you!
Looks great. the question I have with this and the pentax is there going to be spare parts and people able to repair them?
Yes, Mint has a long history of refurbishing cameras. They will have after sales support for repairs etc.
Great. Thanks.
It ticks all the boxes, very impressive job Mint! 🎉
It does!
@@japancamerahunteralso it’s great to hear that they were inspired by your compact camera project, what a lovely tribute.
@@sergioleyvaseiglie I was really touched.
Thank you! I was initially put on the waitlist back in Feb but haven’t heard anything more from them since then.
Same here. Been following updates since passworded page. Wish I got a pre-order link. I suspect I’ll be chasing stock to get one…ugh
epicly inspiring that they were able to produce this!
Looks much thicker (and generally larger) than the "original" Rollei 35. But otherwise an interesting take on a "modern" film camera.
This is exciting! 📸
As an owner of a rollei 35se this new camera has me excited 📷
This looks great. Price is good for a new film camera that will likely outperform Contax point and shoots.
So it has ASA/DIN exposure selector but it does not meters light?
How can it be auto if it doesnt know if its correctly exposed?
You had me at autofocus 😂 the OG Rollei scares me because I suck at zone focusing I have no idea how to eyeball feet/meters 😅
I love it already
Ultimate film camera finally
i just got my hands on a 35S yesterday
Is there any display in the viewfinder other than the albada frame and crosshair mark?
No, it is a very simple display. There are lights on the side to indicate focus lock and flash.
@@japancamerahunter Cool, thank you!
Very nice! I’m going to buy one because any new film camera in 2024 is better than no film camera.
I signed up for the waitlist for this long ago and hope to be able to order one when they're made available. I really love the passion that has gone into developing this. I see this fitting a very similar use case to when I decide to use my Olympus Mju ii: a smaller, AF-only film camera that you can mostly use as a point-and-shoot experience with a bit more manual control possible when desired, but not so much manual control that it gets in the way of taking quick snapshots. The advantage here is that I wouldn't be terrified of the electronics wearing out any day like I am with my older electronic film cameras.
This camera has me excited. The original 35 is still one of my fave 35mm cameras of all time. Much of that comes down to the Tessar lens but I guess even a half decent lens these days would match it. The sample pics doing the rounds look good. AF too! I'm not going to tell the missus, order one on the sly and pretend it's my original 35. She won't know the difference 😂
Thank you
How is the manual focus? edit: just came to the point where you said it can't. Slight bummer. 20:12
So what is better, this or the Pentax?
No idea, Pentax snubbed me so I have not seen one.
@@japancamerahunter What is better on paper do you think?
@@retter2criticalthis is the wrong question. The right question is: „What is better for me?“ They have a different target markets. In the end, I would say that if you love and want to support film photography, buy either one of them or both 😂. The one that feels better to you I would say…
So does this camera have hot shoe or PC sync socket?
It has a FLASH??? Amazing! Absolutely love my 35S, 100% on my radar
Wow! so extremely nice to see it's actually about to be released. This is the best new film camera I have seen. Have a Minox 35 GT-E. But have been thinking of getting a Rollei 35 since the late 70's. Would be nice, when the camera is released, to see a full review and comparison with photos of the new and the old Rollei 35's 🙂
Side note: I was relieved to hear the clarification that it can actually lock focus and reframe at 20:50; that's such a useful way to use cameras like this. Whew!
What battery does it take?
CR2 battery. Good for 1000 shots.
Thanks very much. I am extremely tempted!
I'm getting one of these.
Exciting video release. Kinda wish you showed what it looked like seeing through the viewfinder.
Two new film cameras in the space of months!? Crazy! Both of them fill different niches, I personally choose the Pentax because it fills a role that other cameras I have don't (I also don't like using autofocus) but I am glad that both exist.
Same, I ordered the Pentax yesterday. As you mentioned, 2 new film cameras in 2024 is a great sign for film photography.
I’m sorry I missed this live. Quite excited.
My questions are about the meter. I think it has a meter. I wonder how it is integrated. And how it feels to switch from auto to manual mode; can it be done by one hand?
What about filter threads?
Thank you in advance.
I watched to the end. No filter threads or hood yet. I hope this changes. Mint has been good servicing their sx70s in my experience. Given the size of their company, their correspondence was reasonably quick.
I wasn't planning to get the Mint camera but man it seems so good! Ill start saving my pennies!
Does it take a filter? What size?
It doesn't take a filter.
Ooooohhh I like this, finally 2 film camera releases in 2024. Awesome! Programmable firmware. This kinda reminds me of the Pixii rangefinder. Totally in for the price point
About manual focus, it would be awesome if in a V2 if a software type MF could be done, like with the Contax T3. You can get the AF motor to preset to distance and get zone focusing. Maybe one of the front dials could be used for selecting distance. It would be a great little snap shooter then.
is the frame counter in the oled?
Yes, it is.
Dear Santa, pls bring me one of them new rolleis 😂
The price of a used Contax T3 just went down by 60% haha
The Rollei 35 is my favorite camera of all time, this is going to sell well
This looks rad. As a long time film shooter I respect Pentax’s attempt however it appears too expensive for the entry level shooter and too limited for the enthusiast who would pay the asking price. I’d pay good money for this rollei it looks awesome
It does look like a bit of a chunk compared to the original, but still pretty tiny. I’ll definitely pick this up as a point and shoot! The AF sounds a bit loud maybe, but hard to complain for someone’s first camera 😅
Greetings from up in Aomori. You seem to be a little excited? Seriously though, this was a great intro for what looks like my next purchase! I've got a Rollei 35 and a 35S and love them both. Any idea if this will be available in black?
I was beside myself. It was great. No word on black yet, but I have asked.
Great! You should bring the prototype to HK and I'll design a lens cap around it.
Why does it have ISO override and dx coding if it has no light meter!?
Please read the pinned comment. It does have a light meter. I got a bit excited.
I must say ; there is so much excitement in your eyes ....so Bellamy : Get out there , and Shoot Film ☺ .... Will be waiting for your results // Chris in Puget Sound ...
Just the one focus point?
but how many exposures do you get from a roll of 24 or 36 ;) Great Video and thank you ... JCH version I'm in ... Cheers
Very nice video! Hoping for a 28mm in the future! But I’ll pick this guy up just because any new camera in 2024 is huge for us!
Will it come in silver only, or also black?
Silver only as far as I know.
@@japancamerahunter where is the suggestions box? Haha. Thanks for the response.
It reminds me of the Argus C33 with its chonky brick like sharp corners
Doesn't look like it has a filter thread? Hoping for one to use colour filters for better contrast for B&W film.
This is so much more interesting than the pentax 17. :O Pocketable with AF manual exposure and a 2.8 lens on full 35mm. That are dream specs!
It would be great to have a way to protect the lens (filter threads preferably) for a non retractable design.
Are the dimensions different than the OG Rollie 35?
It is a little bit bigger. But it isn't huge. Fits in your hand.
deos it have a carl zeiss lens ?
From what I read it’s a newly designed lens that former Pentax engineers helped design.
Camera looks great but…the ability to lock focus/exposure and reframe is 100% essential. Can’t use otherwise.
I love my Olympus XA, but I'd be very curious to compare it to this one! Very exciting to see a new film camera like this, full-frame and AF is much more my jam than half-frame and zone focus on the Pentax 17. It's going to be interesting to see which will fare best!
This camera though is larger than the original Rollei with a question mark over the lens quality now until samples are provided.
@@stuartallenphotos Yeah, I doubt it's as pocketable, but still.
Wee....799 $ is really too much....sad, but true.
Man you’re the OG of film cameras and they don’t send you the thing? Man, that’s a red flag right there
Is there a distributor in Europe who will provide warranty support?
I am afraid I don't know about the distributors. There will be warranty support.
It will propably Rollei
I am still having a Fujifilm Klasse W. I wanted sell it but I guess, I am keeping it.
Oh my fucking glob! It’s gorgeous!
too bad we don't have some Fugufilm 400 to go with this camera 👀
I'm already interested and impressed by the offering from Mint, unlike that of Pentax. I've always been impressed by Gary and his products, and I knew that he would come up with the goods.
I still think the price is high though, as I'd be more inclined to buy an original Rollei, Olympus Trip, Olympus 35 RC, and then use the leftover cash to pay for film stock.
I already own an Olympus Trip 35, 35 RC, Pen EE, Canon dial, Ricoh FF1, Yashica T4 and love them all because they can be maintained by myself (with the exception of the T4) and they run as well as when new.
Gary is a legend. Talking to him and learning about the camera was an honour. He really knows his stuff. What we are talking about here is the futire of film cameras for the next 10-20 years, when some of the premium compacts will no longer be working.
Few things you didn’t answer:
1. Does the lens collapse or works as is?
2. How long does CR2 last when using a flash?
3. How powerful the flash light is?
4. Can you do manual focus and disable LiDar AF?
5. Is it a completely different lens or identical lens design?
The lens doesn't collapse. It is set that way.
I don't know how long it will last with flash.
I have not developed anything yet so I cannot tell the flash power.
No, there is no manual focus.
It is a different lens design, it's a 5 element gauss as far as I know.
@@japancamerahunter So you cant pull the lens to shoot images just like other Rollei 35 then?
@@lol-di3tf No, the lens is fixed. This is a moderin interpretation of the Rollei.
WANT!!!!!
+1 +2 ... -1 -2 ... is Exposure Compensation, right? How does it work on the same dial as shutter speed? Also: How can ISO be set? I only see aperture on the left dial.
Yes, that is on the same dial as the shutter speed. For the iso you can change it by selection ISO on the top dial and cycling through with the self timer button. It goes up to 3200.
@@japancamerahunter very cool, thank you for the answer. that's whats always has been missing for me on Mint's newsletters.
man i want it
Are you sure it doesn’t have a light meter?
It has an auto shutter speed mode with exposure compensation, so... has to have a meter I would think.
I was mistaken, it does have a light meter.
@@japancamerahunter can’t wait to see your pics!
DUDEEEEEE I'm on the email list but I haven't heard about a release yet.
So , Bellamy .. you got your hands on a Rollei ; well good man , this NEW iteration , I did not know was coming from MINT , and I think it is more useful that the Pentax release , insomuch that your getting a full 35mm framing. Now if that has a metal body , and the lens is of good quality , this is a superb beginners camera for younger shooters as well as people like myself ... that are a bit romantic about icon's of the photography world . I like it , a wonderful effort and very beautiful from what I see in your video.
Rollei's were always on the cutting edge , and beloved " cult " camera's. I love mine ... ♥
Feels like the new film cameras coming out this year are to make it more complicated and cumbersome for new photographers. How about a a new GR or a new film Leica CL/Minolta CLE?
What a fantastic project. I did have one of the originals of these for a while, so amazing how small they are. The only thing I’ll say is the controls, at least on the old ones, are rather fiddly.
This one is a lot easier. For a new generation.
@@japancamerahunter that’s good to hear. So great that we’re being treated with all these proper new film cameras. This one looks fantastic.
Love you u!!!
21:57 now this is scale focusing 😎
All black version?
We can hope.
Gary alluded to that possibility.
I will own one of these. I have well over 100 film cameras and 13 of them are Rollei 35s, as they are my all time favorites (above Leica and everything else). It’s just too cool to not own.
Wait, no light meter??!!?? That cannot be correct. How can it have an Auto mode without a light meter?
Gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I do wonder if this would have came in a more "affordable" price (whatever that means in shooting film these days), had it not been a Rollei-branded product (of course then, there wouldn't be as much hype)
Granted, not the first time for Rollei to put their stamp on a camera manufactured by somebody else (there were the AFM 35 and 35RF) but it seems every time they do so, it results in a more expensive product with mostly cosmetic differences
Props to the developers though, for coming up with a new design and putting in all the hours to come up with a new film camera in 2024!
Having seen the literal years of work and attention to detail that mint have put into this remarkable project I consider the price to be very fair. When the Contax T2 came out it was similarly priced.
I think that Gary and his team have produced something special and it is worth every penny.
@@japancamerahunter Yes the camera itself is very very impressive! Considering what the Klasses and T2 are still going for, I think the price is very competitive.
My point was more so how Rollei seem to have a habit of sticking their logo on a product made by someone else... But alas I'm sure the endorsement brought this project to many more people
what's the point of dx coding, there is no meter?
Read the comments, there is a meter.
@@japancamerahunter ah, i watched the bit where you said no light meter :)
The lens... what is its pedigree? Is it a Sonnar? Tessar? Ultron?
It is a 5 element gauss.
@@japancamerahunter well, still wondering. Gauss is very vague (double gauss would at least imply a ultron/planar like structure) to figure this out. 5 elements is heliar in its most basic form, but I doubt they went for that. Looking forward to find out more :)
