- Portofino is a small village on the Italian coastline, near the city of Genoa, in Northern Italy. It is located at the tip of the peninsula that bears the same name, and its centuries old churches, its castle, lighthouse, pastel colored houses - the list goes on - make it a top tourist destination in Liguria.
San Fruttuoso is an abbey located in a secluded cove, approximately one and a half hours away, to the west of Portofino. The origins of the Abbey date back to the 8th century, when Prospero, bishop of Tarragona, trying to escape the Arab invasion of Spain, took refuge in the bay by building a small church there to preserve the relics of the martyr Saint Fructuoso.
The place is internationally best known for the sunken statue of Christ of the Abyss, a bronze statue of the Saviour placed in the Mediterranean Sea, at approximately 17 metres (56 ft) depth. The waters surrounding the promontory of Portofino are a Marine Protected Area since 1999, making it a true paradise for divers.
