Un Buen Carnicero (A Good Butcher)

- A good butcher listens. When customers at Cliff's Meat Market in Carrboro, North Carolina began asking for cuts in Spanish, owner Cliff Collins started looking for help. For nearly 18 years Tolo Martinez has worked behind Cliff's counter, learning "country" English and giving college professors, blue-collar workers and long-time patrons exactly what they want-and always with a smile. Un Buen Carnicero goes behind the courtesies of the butcher's counter on the eve of Independence Day to explore the complex realities of immigrant life while celebrating America's freedom and questioning its convenience.

Really like the idea of having subtitles for both languages.
I love the use of captioning for both languages. It creates a beautiful balance between Tolo's & Cliff's stories.
One of the best things I've seen. "Mi familia es faliz. De las otras, no se." Beautiful.
So great to discover this video out of nowhere. Cliff, Tolo, Maria, and the whole staff always treated their customers like family. And anything they didn't have on hand like gator Cliff would immediately order for me. Such a wonderful group of people. I have yet to find a solid replacement in Brooklyn
This has me in tears. I have worked with so many amazing people from Mexico over the years and his peacefulness and hard work is really commendable.
Eater makes the best videos. The editing was amazing and the story was so touching. It makes you appreciate all the businesses and the staff we rely on for everything we buy.
My gosh this is some seriously amazing editing. I take my hat off to you, sir! Cheers from São Paulo, Brazil!
You were probably not even wearing a hat
+Nein Fuckerzzz Dude this made me crack up.
My dad has been a butcher since the age of 5 @Puerto Rico This hit me right in the feels great video.
I'm in love with this style of capturing
Mad respect for Tolo speaking some truth and not far from my house. I'll have to stop by.
I really like this video. I could feel the soul of the people on it. I couldn't stop seeing it despite my internet conection. Congratulation.
I hope when cliff retires, he gives that guy his business. Or sells it to him cheap. He deserves it.
Totally agreed, he seems like such a hard worker and so dedicated.
that little girl trying to lift that basket made me laugh so hard. she was REALLY trying to help.
That was almost as powerful as an Innaritu film.
Wonderful.
Thank you for this piece, it was almost like poetry in some form or shape. Tolo is a very down to earth guy, wish him the best of luck on his journey. God Bless.
the production, filming, and editing of this video is pretty fucken good. good job!
I can't believe I was just watched a day in a life of a butcher and it's compelling enough that you root for just a regular guy.
The quality of these videos are insane
+TheNaz Seriously, some of the best cinema work on culinary.
You are a hard worker, a kind man and considerate Tolo. Cliff and you are a great team. Be blessed.
Loved it! it's what I see in my Mexican community every day.
I am a butcher in Australia and I wish you all the very best amigo.
when he said he feels trapped, I know that what he wants is financial freedom.
This video somehow got me feeling warm inside lol.
I get some kind of satisfaction seeing this video, first the video quality is so tight and the edition is perfect, but most of all the place looks clean that make you want to own or work in a place like that.
this is going to favorites ¡heck yeah!
What a precious, beautiful slice of life, video, couple of men, and a business.
America, Mexico, Meat, Business, Life
I keep coming back to this - it hits hard.
Awesome video, I too appreciate the different subtitles.
Free country, yes it is, but only at its convenience....ain't that the truth.
Is sad...Mexicans and blacks never have it good enuff,,,,Im Irish and my people when they immigrated were treated worse than any Mex or black
@@michaelstradley4579 Never. Check your history books a little further.
"I feel trapped" that's the cry of a man who knows his mobility and flexibility died when he had kids.
Love the film, the story simple and complex at the same time, felicitationes!
I absolutely love businesses like this! Awesome video!
felicidades por poner a nuestra gente en alto un orguyo para nosotros, sigan igual
this was great, we need more quality content like this one.
Keep making these! So thoughtful and brilliant in every way.
- these are good guys; Cliff reminds me of Harold the Butcher from 'Hey Arnold!'
Thackery Saussy, one of my favorite Hey Arnold episodes. 😎
That was truly amazing to watch. Thank you!
I don't think people are understanding but Tolo kinda hates the job? He likes the stability but nothing more can come out of this but only long hours. He was hoping that moving to this country would be different but it feels more of the same as it did back home.
what makes you say that? not trying to disagree but am trying to understand this video more
He feels bored of life and thought that moving to a different country would make a difference but it didnt
i think its the reality of most migrants.. they work at whatever they can because the goal is to provide a better future for their family. job satisfaction takes a back seat mostly.
I'm like super stoned right now!.. I learned Spanish a lol.
lil
holy shit this was really deep! seriously thank you to everyone involved, so many subliminal moments. Love everywhere
Story telling at its finest. #sublime
This is so visually appealing!
I love this place!
that was amazing ..thank you
It's on the #PBSiff PBS Indies Film Festival 2015.
"I always smile" he says just before the 10 minute and just as he says that he puts on the most bad ass "i l chope u down" face he could
Imagine him on his bad days
Young cliff be looking like drake lmao
What a sweet little film! Moving, funny and by the end, revealing. This is the truth about immigrants.
this channel is going to be huge. How can i help contribute to this amazing movement
Que bonito trabajo Tolo!
11:14 HOLY SHIT LOOK AT HOW FUCKING FAST HE IS GOING THROUGH THOSE CHICKENS!
+Brendan Burke HE JUST DESTROYED THE CHICKENS HE TOTALLY DESTROYED IT
Perfect representation of the working immigrant class. Viva la raza!
Love this video !
Excellent Video.
Awesome vid!
"Go slow and keep the knife away from your hand." Good advice.
Damn!!! That's a great video...
Bien Dicho
"Get your fifth for the fourth on the third."
Cliff overuses it, perhaps, but it's catchy, and sage advice in its literal meaning, as well as metaphorically. Plus, I both intentionally and instinctively tend to promote drinking.
"I feel trapped." That phrase speaks volumes of what this man feels. He knows he's in a rat race and at times, the weight of it all is too much. He would have liked to do something more full filing then butcher work.
Honest labor
Can someone please let me know what the first opening tune is from, thank you!! Been trying to find it for ages
GREAT VIDEO
8:53 You'll NEVER see me doing something like that.... I'll be missing fingers in my second day....
really nice.:)
I was waiting for him to explain why felt trapped
anyone know the name of the first song? credits didn't help any
Future powerlifter!
I know this video is over a year old. But you have to do something that provides some satisfaction to yourself. I get that you want to make sure your customers are satisfied and happy but man do something that makes you happy. I may be completely wrong but the look in your eyes didn't seem like you were happy. I love your dedication but don't allow yourself to feel trapped by it.
he doesn't have papers/legal in the US. He does it because his family is happy. I am sure Cliff pays him more than he would ever get back home. He understands on what being a man is some times.
Not sure what the point of this video was. He seems both happy and sad.
No way Tolo is 37...he looks younger. :D
Am I missing something? What is the complex reality the video suggests? If it's there, it's too subtle and the filmmaker tries too hard to not offend.
+chientzuyang Its life. That's literally it- reality and life is just like that. Cliff runs a mildly successful butcher shop, employs a couple guys (particularly ones that speak spanish to help is business) and Tolo has a decent, if a bit underwhelming job to support his young family.
You don't write or edit a story here, there isn't a story. It's just life in motion, raw unedited feelings, laid out in front of you.
That's life. It sort of makes you want to smile and frown at the same time, doesn't it?
"Get your fifth for the fourth on the third"
Tolo is cute
el nacho.
he wants to do more than a butcher. that's what he meant but it's the government that's not giving him the right to doit only cause he's not from the u.s. sad but true.
Cliff Collins said the N word the only time I went in his store.
i don't really get why he doesn't really speak english after 20 years in this country. i spoke really well after only a few months in a spanish speaking country.
orange moonglows It's harder for some to learn than it is for others, especially accents take a while to iron out. Besides, his English isn't all that bad.
orange moonglows His English is fine. The joke is that, since he learned all of his English from Cliff, he's got a "country" accent. I found that rather charming.
orange moonglows He clearly speaks english. But with his family and the latinos that visit the store, speaking Spanish creates a closer connection. As immigrants, we integrate into the American culture, it's just not possible not to BUT you don't want to lose your connection to your ethnic culture as well.
Long Trac
when he speaks english, it's really not all that great for someone who's lived here 20 years and interacts with other english speakers every day.
+orange moonglows Doesn't help that in those 20 years he was passed all the non-english speakers, and only allowed to interact with a very few amount of english speakers.
17 Donald Trump supporters u liked this video.
Trump 2016
Donald Trump disgusts me.
Tolo is gonna loose it sooner or later, I see it in his eyes... one day snap, cliff's a dead man
