A settlement existed at the location of London long before the Romans arrived. William the Conqueror did not conquer Westminster Abbey, the City of London accepted him as King after he conquered the rest of the country. Historically the city of London was the only place in England where the monarch did not actually rule. The Lord Mayor of London was the highest power within the city walls. He could, and did, affect who was allowed to be crowned as monarch.

Little bit misleading. The Norman’s didn’t invade London or take Westminster abbey. William was crowned there on Christmas Day, after invading the south coast and killing the existing king.
Actually Harold's son was proclaimed king after the battle of Hastings, so William had a few more fights before he was able to strike a bargain with the people of London and be crowned King.

The Normans did not invade the area of London. They couldn't get in and only entered once William promised to protect their status. Also Westminster Abbey is not in London. It was created ourside of London as the London of 1066 was only the real City of London.

There was a settlement prior to the Romans arrival, they just reinforced it and built it. They also buying the biggest building in Western Europe there in the shape of a basilica. After the Romans left London fell into ruin because the arriving tribes thought it was built by giants and was inhabited by ghosts so the northern part was left to rot and settlements grew south of the river instead. People eventually started to move back and built farms amongst the crumbling Roman ruins.

London’s an amazing city to visit. It’s history, the Thames, attractions, bars, markets, clubs, foods, Uber boats, skyscrapers.. the apprentice 🤣
People telling you otherwise are grumpy old Londoners who are the type not to leave the city and see the rest of the UK. Thing with British people is, they have a culture to complain, customer services etc. the customers always right and “my fact, my say” goes above yours type of attitude. It’s even worse the south you go in England, especially towards London, Surrey, Essex, Kent etc. they’re very entitled peoples, they complain about everything. They’re the type of people not to leave their surrounding areas and explore the rest of the UK, and call it “shit”. Then call their city shit. They get stressed out living in a big city then become like angry New Yorkers or Parisians.
When foreigners visit, enjoy London, stay away from grumpy locals, get out the city and also explore other places across England, Wales and Scotland. You’ll realise how approachable people can be outside London and the far south. This going for all ethnicities living outside London.
You’ll find people living in London and around its vicinity approaching comments like this with anger, as that being their culture and mentality. Its what they think is right matters first, I’ll definitely have comments here telling me how I’m wrong and how London is an awful place. They forget they get paid higher salaries and understand they live in a very famous capital city, that’s why their rents high, and cost of livings high. So expect to pay more if you’re going to live in a big expensive city. If you want to complain, then move to a different UK city. Is there anything else you could think of, that’ll shut their mouths up 😂

William the Conqueror gave the countryside and the abbots that controlled the land, one option, submit, or be burned out. He burned out most of England and dismantled the powerful Abbeys where the church stored its wealth, stone by stone. William gave land to his Norman knights and they controlled it. William didn't mess around and that's why he was the greatest European King. From Bastard to Nation Builder.

Your facts are wrong. William never took the city of London, in fact it was the only part of England he failed to conquer which is why the square mile has its own laws, its own system, and is why the King has to ask for permission to enter the city’s walls.
This is a terrible history lesson.

I was born in London, but my parents along with majority of the working class were moved out of London, in the 1960s before my third birthday, in the what they conveniently called the London overspill, instead of eviction. I would've chosen to move back to London, when I became an adult, unfortunately during the 1980s they started to ruin the face of London, with ugly buildings and former working class areas became the haunt of snobs, especially along the Thames, I would never move to London, now too many ugly buildings like the gherkin etc, and too violent nowadays

... conquered Westminster Abbey..? No son. There was a battle near a settlement called Hastings in 1066. Here, Harold Hardrada died, and Duke William the Bastard took over. He was crowned in Westminster, being elevated to King William the 1st, the Conqueror.
In 1066 the Normans that invaded Britain were the grandchildren of the last generation of Vikings. They relocated in Normandy before crossing the channel.
So the Normans were Vikings invading the south of England which their ancestors had not.
