I completely understand your struggle to pin down the emotion if this song as it's an example of what Radiohead do best. Thom's lyrics are always dark or melancholic sometimes even depressing yet their music is the opposite, achingly beautiful and soaring joyous light. It's that juxtaposition that has made me love them for nearly 30 years now.
I saw Radiohead at the Sydney entertainment center when they toured for "hail to the thief." When they played exit music it was one of the most amazing live music experiences I've had. You could hear a pin drop from the audience when tom began by himself and then that amazing crescendo at the end. Chefs kiss.
i'll never forget it: summer 1997 on my 13th birthday (july 1) my best neighbor friend took me to the local music store and said "I know exactly what to get you for your birthday..." and he bought me this album which had just come out that day (in the US - it was released a couple months earlier in the UK). at that point i only knew RH from the radio/MTV plays like "Creep" and "High and Dry" so i didn't really know what to expect... i owe that friend so much because that album made me a Radiohead fan. and then when Kid A came out 3 years later and literally changed my life... that was it, Radiohead became my Band. It felt as though every album came out at the right point in my life; as i grew and matured and experienced life, their music accurately dictated the thoughts/emotions i was feeling at the time and as I grew into my own as a musician & audio engineer, their work has been one of the most profound on me. We're very lucky to live in a time when Thom, Jonny, Ed, Colin, and Phil are making music together
Its the modern way of life.. that makes us feel like were drowning.. and the drawing in the video you can take it literally like a dying moment just to find the pretty house and garden afterwards.. or you can take it as a symbolic death, like a glimpse of eternal silence, a moment to catch our breath again, that makes us get rid of the tension and heaviness and burdens in our hearts and minds.. just so we can come back to earth and keep going.. carry on..
You have deep insight separating depression from resignation. Most people talk about this song as if it is depressive. I find that usually its the people who have dealt with depression irl who understand the finesse in Thom's writing. It is a sad acceptance, the kind that makes you say "ok, I'll be part of this world, just don't make it so hard on me"
You have cracked this, it’s a modern lullaby where the world has taken over, you’re drowning but yearning for a peaceful life keeps you going despite everything x There, There or Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi would be good to see you react to x
OK Computer was one of the greatest concept albums aver made and one of the greatest albums ever made. They were decades ahead of their time with this album- you should definitely check it out.
Radiohead's 3rd album 'OK Computer' became more abstract musically, rather than continue as a rock band that they started out as in 1993... Strangely, Radiohead actually sold better w/ this record than when 'Creep' became a hit in '93... More hardcore fans came to the band and their 2000 album 'Kid A' was even more abstract and went to #1 on the US charts again.
Yeah, what’s amazing to me about Radiohead is that what they kept doing SHOULDN’T have worked, but it did. They absolutely refused to play it safe, and it paid off both commercially and creatively. I guess the “smart” choice would have been for them to keep releasing albums like The Bends (which I LOVE AS WELL, don’t get me wrong lol), but just straightforward rock albums basically. Instead, they kept going farther into the left field with more abstract album after another, and it only brought them even more recognition!
It's like a lullaby. And the song to me is like " hey I've been through whatever fucked up shit I'm going through so please life! Let me rest in my bed and get over it for a minute with no more surprises and no alarms. I need to heal!!!" That's the way I interpreted it but I could change my mind tomorrow. That's why stuff is cool
Thank you for you reaction, I find Thom Yorke’s voice as well as the whole band amazing too. You should try Weird Fishes/Arpeggi (from the basement) which is a live and an incredible performance.
A genuine reaction. This is one of my all time favourite albums. 2 of my deaerest friends have been buried to this song, another to Paranoid Andoird. My sister has a recurring nightmare of her and I dying in a car listening to this album, so we're not allowed to listen to it in one ever lol. If this song doesn't make you cry like aschool girl, you have no emotions. A rare and beautiful beast to see live too
Everyone who likes Radiohead should look for HBO's "Westworld" soundtrack by the brilliant Ramin Djawadi( who composed for Game Of Thrones also)... The soundtrack contains a lot of radiohead's songs all in piano and violin and it is PERFECT!! There's "fake plastic trees", "No surprises" but my favorites in the show are "Motion picture soundtrack" and "Exit Music for a film" Trust me you'll wanna hear that
Radiohead are absolute legends - you'd love them live, check out "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi: From the Basement" - you are so great at this, would love to see you get more into this incredible band. Peace and love//
It is a song about going into and out of depression. When you are suffering from depression, alarms and surprising hit you hard. He is trying to protect his psyche. Thom's words hint to the meaning both in meaning and texture. He is not like Hemingway, exact. He is like Monet, where there are hints of meaning. His lyrics are messing and inaccurate, like in real life. I like him because he is the opposite of me. I am very exact in how I talk. People call me a dictionary. He is very emotional. Check out Everything in its Right place to get that energy you like.
Recommend: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Song is called Man of the World. Lyrics video is the best version. This is the original blues lineup of band. Peter writes great songs, sings beautiful, and he plays a soulful guitar along with the other guitarists. 😊😊😊
Hi. 1997's most important album, OK Computer by Radiohead. This single came from that album. If you wish to try something very different, but with a powerful female voice, try the 1983 song Bad Day, by Carmel. Carmel's voice will make you sit up and take note. Cheerio.

the song seems like almost a suicide note of someone giving up, tired of life and wanting to end the noisy existence- the glockenspiels sounding like an ambulance siren. Maybe Im wrong, who knows with Tom Yorke
that's not it. This song is about giving up on taking risks in order to have a long safe secure world with the eventuality to have to sell out on your morale for doing so
Chances are you struggle to get this song because of age. In 20 years this song will make sense. And that drowning visual with lyrics "I'll take a quite life, a handshake of carbon monoxide" are perfect. Its the mundane banality of life. Its in those lines "Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden. And no alarms and no surprises", while underneath chorus sings "let me out of here".
Hi Biss, as a native speaker I can't make it the lyrics that well, which suggests to me that this song is more about the vibe and emotion of it and not the lyrics. I think today, and with many reactors it's definitely true, that they try to analyse every single word and I think in some songs, like this one, it's not needed. I think we all get from the don't and the video what the song is trying to put across, and it's only really the words you can hear and make out that are important.
Hello! This is the first time I've commented and I think it would be interesting if you reacted to the video clip for the song "Man of War" by Radiohead. There is a lot to analyze in that song.
Sung accents are a bit different from spoken accents. It can be hard to make out lyrics as a native speaker too. The word for what you describe is "resignation". Being resigned to a bad state of affairs. It is related to despair but not exactly the same. It's a different usage from when a politician resigns, meaning quits their job and lets a rival take it instead.
Even native English speakers have a hard time understanding him! You're English is better than a lot of native speakers. Radiohead are one of the greats, imo, the Pink Floyd of their time.
Yeah, Thom doesn't have the best enunciation in Rock, and if anything this is one of his clearest performances! Another one by the same band that you might like: "Just" - fun, rockin' tune and has a pretty interesting video as well.
Nice reaction 👍🏻 If Radiohead and Pink Floyd had a baby together, it would have been Marillion. Please check them out!🙏 Neverland (live '09) is awesome...
