We have owned our home at OOB for 18 years and spend our vacation time in Aroostook County because of the overcrowding we have here. We look forward to fall and winter. The biggest complaint from locals is that the away people have expectations that everything will be the same as where they are from and can result in a lot of disrespect to those of us that call Maine our home. Rental properties are on the rise and many our neighborhoods have changed forever. My advice to those who move to Maine is leave the expectations you currently have behind and expect resistance to change because we like it how it is.

Also, speaking as someone who has lived all over the south, including Alabama, Georgia, and texass, the correct pronunciation of that term you used is "southern hostility". There's nothing hospitable about the people I met in any of those places. I really had to learn to keep my guard up around them.

I have to agree with you. I've lived in the south, as have members of my family and other friends that we have. We've all had very bad experiences in the south. Lots of the "art of language" disguising anger and hostility. I'm sure there are some nice people down there but I met a lot of people when I lived there and everyone I know who's elsewhere and lived in the south has had a very similar experience. The southerners tried to tell me how rude and inappropriate I am for being blunt (I'm from Michigan/ Chicago) even though I'm kind. We may be straight shooters, but we aren't hateful. I'm hoping to move to New England at some point.

@@despicablemaine160 That's pretty much all of rural America in a nutshell. Everything is so spread out in most American cities. Car ownership is mandatory and acts as the gatekeeper. Without a car, the climb out of poverty is impossible. With a car, you would still have to be quite wealthy before all of the money being pumped into your car becomes trivial. Even in areas with adequate public transit, poverty is still rampant.
Most of America is in a sad state and it's not an accident. It was by design. This was the intended outcome. They want the poor to stay poor.

Great info. However, the lack of diversity is not necessarily a con. To say that is a racist accusation against the people living there. But it is politically correct. The lack of diversity is assumed to be a negative because the state is mostly white.

Would like some input on moving to Maine, specifically Belfast. My husband is a physician and may be taking a temporary position there for about a year. From what I have researched, Maine appears to be beautiful with a lot of pros but after reading the comments speaking about lack of diversity being a pro I am slightly concerned. My husband is white but I am hispanic with a brown complexion. I have a masters degree, I am a genuinely kind person, and grew up in white suburbia so I am used to being one of the few colored people in a community. That being said, should I worry that I may be treated differently if we decide to move to Maine or are the negative comments about diversity on here not a true representation of the state?
Open to comments from anyone who can shed some light!

We would like to find a spot close to or in a small town. We don’t mind tourism, have lived with busy summer months for many years in South Jersey. High speed internet is a must for work and I know options are limited. Wondering if most areas are flood prone - there are such beautiful homes close to rivers. We find ourselves very drawn to them. Wow! I can’t believe the line of BS in the video and comments! I live in Very Northern Maine. Moved here with the Air Force in 1976 and stayed. Homes were very affordable. Land very affordable. ( during Covid pricing went sky high with people from away trying to escape cities. It has just started to go down). People keep to themselves mostly. But if you ask for help they won’t turn you down. Year round Plenty of outdoor activities year round. Granted not much night life anymore. Great family life. #1 problem is drugs and lack of mental health care. Fuel prices are prob the same everywhere. Just use a bit more of it here in the winter. To live here you need good transportation. Help wanted signs are everywhere. And if you’re skilled you will do ok.. if politics is a requirement for you fine but northern Maine is very conservative. Don’t try to change that. Canada is close by and easy to go to. Bangor and the coast 3-4 hr drive. I will say if you want to party hard, into drugs and or want to change things then Maine isn’t for you.

People in Maine are not mean. We're just a lot more self-contained and private than most Americans. Also, we get overwhelmed by the annual flood of tourists. Generally speaking, unless you've really earned your place here, and have found a way into our hearts, we'd really prefer you'd just spend your money, enjoy your vacation and go home. We get tired of being priced out of our hometowns and coastlines by wealthy investors and remote earners from away. If you breeze in here and snatch up our grandparents homestead for your vacation home/investment property because a tenth generation fisherman can't afford to keep it anymore and now has to commune two hours to get to the harbor, of course you're going to find the locals are a bit cool towards you. It takes years and a lot of shared hardship to become a Mainer-poverty, and grit, bleak gray winters, and the ability to build a good life out of very little. You can buy up all our waterfront, but you can't buy that.

New Yorker living in Maine since 1990, in Androscoggin County - north of Portland. We are finally working on leaving. Why? Weather - due to climate change, winters are generally warmer and now we get more ice and rainy days than snow per se, and often the snow storms are heavy snow, esp. the most recent one in late spring.
Power outages - where I live, just west of Auburn, a generator is a necessary appliance in the house. Got one after the big ice storm in '98 and can't do without it. Lost power 3.5 weeks in that storm and, since then, we've lost power multiple times, including at least 4 times in 2024.
As to Maine people, some are very welcoming, but many others we have encountered are not willing to be inclusive to those who are from "Away". And many Maine people don't like to go outside their comfort zone, want everything to be like how life was back in their grandparents' time.
And, then, the roads. If you live in a rural or semi-rural area of Maine like we do, you will find road maintenance to be awful, and, during the warmer months when you might wish to explore the state, that's when they have "Construction Season" when they work on the roads, actually the only time they really can.
You might wonder, why don't you move down to Southern Maine? Well, the real estate prices south of where we live are insane. Even after selling our paid off home, there is no way we could afford what stuff is going for there. So we are moving to warmer climes where we get more bang for our buck and don't have to worry so much about power outages and dealing with the snow (often every 3 days in winter). Expect that whoever buys our place will commute down to Portland area (that's what I did) as we are only 30 miles away via the Turnpike.

You make it sound like we do not have any other races here. That is wrong. We have Blacks, Asians, French, Mexicans and quite a few from other Countries. It's not because we are not welcoming it's because most people do not like snow, high taxes, and being paid so much less than other states. It's hard on that part. I have lived here 65 years and I would never live anywhere else. I do not even go out of state anymore. No need for all that nonsense of in other states. I think people here a little stand offish at first. Most warm up though. It is boring here if you are young. Not much nightlife if any. This state is mostly old. Old people. Lots of old people. Still I love Maine and I hope you do not listen to the person making the video and see for yourself. I think she is a little off.

Honestly there is also a misconception about the south as well I have lived in the south most of my life but I also have lived in other states and country but the rudest place I have lived and live is Georgia they are not nice and by far the worst place I have ever lived and if I could I would move. Growing up as a military child I had the opportunity to meet lots of different people. So I definitely understand the misconceptions.

Lived in New York, Florida, Ohio and Maine Traveled to more than 25 states and a few countries Maine is the worst I have seen with crime and racism. I have never been treated so poorly being "from away" .

Negative 80? 😂😂 you live in southern Maine in live in Millinocket which is 2 hours away from the Canadian border. It’s only been -80 once that I can recall. But NOT in the summer Ayo what 😂

I lived in Maine for 30 years. I was depressed 8 months out of the year. I hated it but raised my kids and grandkids there. Basically I lived for the summer, but summers are only 12 weeks long (if you’re lucky). After Columbus Day through Memorial Day the trees are leafless and flowers are just blooming in June. I finally moved back to my hometown in Southern California. I regret that I ever left. Also wages in Maine are way less than other states. I do miss my friends and the church I was a part of for 26 years. But so happy to be near my family in California again. Our two daughters moved out here before we moved back, so that’s another reason I moved. My husband has a sister that lives in Maine so we have been back to visit her. But I’ll never move back.

The biggest spider in Maine lives in the sewers of Derry. It disguises itself as a clown so beware. 🎈
