Björk - You only live twice

- You only live twice or so it seems,
One life for yourself and one for your dreams.
You drift through the years and life seems tame,
Till one dream appears and love is its name.
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on,
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone.
This dream is for you, so pay the price.
Make one dream come true, you only live twice.
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on,
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone.
This dream is for you, so pay the price.
Make one dream come true, you only live twice.
Nancy sang it straight. Bjork sang it with passion.
It’s so strange to me. Her inability to sing it due to her accent makes it a struggle to listen to but I can’t stop repeating it? I can’t stop listening. It’s so enchanting. I’m literally discovering bjork as of today and wow she is absolutely an artist. Went from Bachelorette to this. Jesus
@@TheChazzyC I mean, right? Between this, Hyperballad, and Army of Me, you just find yourself...captivated by how she expresses herself, and how *that* (in turn) enhances the lyrics she's working with.
It’s an actual crime that björk has not sung a bond theme, her voice suits bond sooooooooo well 😍😍😍😍
I always think this when I listen to play dead. To me that song sounds like a perfect bond theme
@@silveme ua-cam.com/video/Bc0BnI0l4NE/v-deo.html
@@silvemeI always thought Bachelorette would have been a fantastic Bond theme
Really nice version of this terrific song. She is committed to it. Really strong.
Mmmm this cover takes you to the moon and outer space so I mean...take your pick! Nancy sang this with stealth and björk sang this with lush
NANCY!
Sorry Nancy, I normally prefer originals but gotta say I love this version so much I prefer it...
Wow
Björk gives me life
+Jordan Sprinkles get a life...
Anyone has this version instrumental ?
Oh yes, she's an original. But if you really want to hear Bjork do an outstanding cover of a standard, forget this and try out this song from the AT+T concert in 1998 -- with orchestra conducted by Vince Mendoza. A spectacular performance.
Bjork - Gloomy Sunday.
Wow !
mua mua mua ...
Amazing, the courage to adjust such a great song to a new advangarde level.
I think you mean to have the courage to completely destroy a once beautiful song.
HunBun
bestias , salud otra vez ... que sabran de lovers
“Bjork, James Bjork.”
🤣
Brilliant .love it !!
Actually I think it would be, Bjork, Bjork Bjork... 😉
That's one way to butcher a song.We could also hear the nina Hagen version.
Thanks for trying, I'll take Nancy.
Epic
Nancy Sinatra's version is a sultry Lullaby, while Bjork's is a surreal symphony.
I love them both.
True.
You could definitely compose a movement of a symphony with this.
OH YEAH THEIR BOTH SUPERB !!!!!!!!
It is one of the most beautiful and haunting of the Bond themes, for sure. But seriously? With her weird pronunciation and screeching throughput, this is a travesty. (shudder). Just awful.
Anyone got this in HD?
The arrangement on this is just gorgeous.
Listening on headphones. It's amazing
@@ltrecker yeah it’s beautiful. But on a high quality stereo it takes it to a whole new level
There's no accounting for bad musical taste. If Bjork was an unknown, performing in a pub karaoke, people would be looking at each other in despair at the awful dis-harmonic sounds being forced upon their ears.
It must be breathtaking. Too bad there isn’t a instrumental version.
Yeah. Her voice in my opinion doesn’t match the symphony of the song. I’m still looking for an instrumental version of this.
*You only live twice: once when you are born, and once when you look death in the face.* -Japanese poet _Bassho_ 1643-94.
Ian Fleming, in his novel, "You Only Live Twice," has the novel's protagonist, James Bond, write that haiku, in the style of Basho. So, it's actually Ian Fleming who wrote that haiku.
The novel is about James Bond finding self-renewal, finding that he can live a second time, so to speak.
@@Deeperquestions Thanks, I did not know that.
@@humbleevidenceaccepter7712 You're very welcome.
@@JimCutler I didn't know that, thank you! But is makes sense because Fleming's novel is about self-renewal. Yes, Fleming returned, after his heart attack, to the land of the living, and having looked death in the face, began a new life, and his fictional character, James Bond, having been emotionally devastated by having his wife murdered (by Blofeld) has been brought back into her Majesty's secret service, by "M," once again as Agent 007, and has become revitalized in Japan.
On a personal note, I've found that anyone can have a second life, if they really wish to. One doesn't need to have a heart attack or a devastating death in the family. The Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, in his "Meditations," has this prescription for a happy and fulfilling life: Imagine that you have already died and that what you're now living is a bonus. Following that advice requires a fair amount of imagination, but I can say from experience that it works. It makes all of one's burdens seem much lighter, and makes one a lot more cheerful in the face of adversity. And so now I am living my second life.
@@JimCutler That is a very encouraging quote, Jim! I appreciate your sharing it with me.
I think Bjork should have done a bond song she would be perfect for it
Play Dead comes quite close to that
She might one day. But they tend to pick people who currently have a high profile. Imagine getting that call though. Hi, I'm Barbara Broccoli, are you interested in doing a Bond theme?
One year on. Why does Bjork's version of this clasic song drive such passion? So Brilliant and has put me in a better place.
I really enjoyed this rendition. The original will always have a special place in my heart, but this is a worthy cover in its own right.
"I learned the hard way that you should never cover your favorite tunes because they are good already. Cover bad tunes and make them good" This a quote from Björk herself about this actual cover she did. It was originally recorded for David Arnold’s Bond covers album but she pulled it before it was released but as some promos had already been sent to radio stations it leaked out. So don’t give her such a hard time guys, she agrees with you.
I love it, tho. It really feels like a tune Bjork actually wrote.
But one of her biggest songs was "It's Oh So Quiet," a cover. I'm shocked she said this.
You're kidding right? This version is sublime bruh.
Reminds me of something Odd Nosdam said about sampling. Instead of using stuff that he already thought was good, he'd grab stuff he thought wasn't good, in the hope of giving the music a second chance
This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Bjork said that you shouldn't cover your favorite songs, but I think she can. She just needs to sing in her voice, with layers and effects that make her sound.
This arrangement is so unbelievable and her voice is to wonderful and unique. Thank you for your amazing art Bjork, it moves me and helps me through hard times ❤
Beautiful arrangement and a stunning bjork
I don't understand why people hate this cover, I find it very magical and beautiful, as well as very melancholic at the same time
The manner in which this is sung does not go with the vibe of the movie.
It might not be her best work (it's a cover), but you have to be familiar with Björk's discography and singing technique to truly appreciate this. This sounds like something that could have been produced in "Post" or Dancer in the Dark's "Selmasongs". I think it's devastating and beautiful.
She needed my help. The vocal phrasing cut-off's are too severe. They ruin it.
background music omg is sooooooo fire i am speechless right now
Guys get over yourselves, shes singing it in her own style, whenever a singer doesnt have the typical voice or style of singing its always considered bad.
Wow! Whenever they get around to finding Daniel Craig's replacement, this fine voice should be enlisted to sing the opening for that movie.
I agree she would make a great voice for a bond film .
Such a shame this didn't make it onto the Shaken & Stirred album. It's a really good version.
Björk has got so much Energy just pure feelings 👏
I personally love this version, idgaf
Unique performer. Love this.
This is a really great version, I didn't expect this. I didn't expect something bad, just not this.
First time hearing this. Love it
A wonderful interpretation of a wonderful piece of music.
Such a gorgeous organic composition -- a talented remake from one of 20th century's greatest movie score composers, John Barry -- whom I would imagine would love this rendition. Amazing.
It's a tough call. We all grew up with and fondly remember the Nancy Sinatra version. Hey, it's hard to beat that, with the opening movie credits and all. But this by Bjork is certainly energetic. Those opening strings sound too close of a copy to the original, though. Good comments here, thanks for the post, MrQcharm
Thing is with cover versions the original still exists. Covers rarely try to be better than the original. Ive remixed songs I love in the past but still prefer the original. I dont try to be better...just different.
+Dan Stokoe that's why this never got released properly. bjork thought the exact same thing about this.
It has nothing to do with being a cover version. Her voice is rubbish!
@@redblade43 She has a voice?
The Best Bond Song Ever a great tribute to Nancy Sinatra this performer did justice
I always get scared when artists remake a classic tune ....but Bjork has done an amazing job.😉👍💎What a really beautiful take on this already great theme...nice work Bjork .....(and it's far far better than Coldplays depressing version of this classic!)
Coldplay's version is awesome. Great rock-band version of the song.
She seems mild mannered enough, but don't say hello to her at an airport, trust me on this one.
Robert Kess welcome to bangkok
@@mutantty2887 One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
. Can't be too careful with your company. I can feel the devil walkin' next to me.
If you read the backstory on that, she was 100% justified slugging that rat.
My two favorite thing! And why the fuck haven't they given Björk the honor of singing a Bond theme yet????
+Frida Trolle Because she sucks. . . big time .
Don Rozar Sorry but you're wrong. You can say that you don't like her music but saying that she "sucks big time" is simple incorrect lol
Ok. . I don't like her music . . . because she sucks big time -
Don Rozar You are very intelligent....
I don't like Justin Bieber either but I'm not that blind that I can't see he's talented and I don't think he "sucks big time" (You're so articulate too!) but I really don't like his music.
***** Exactly! Very Bond, she has such a BIG voice and what I like is that she sings with a lot of feeling and drama :) She should totally sing the next bond song! :)
sheer audacity makes it her own.
I find the original to be something of a yawn. It seemed strange to me that a song filled with so much lyrical need and yearning should be sung in such a relaxed fashion. I also couldn't feel any of the sung 'danger' in the original. I can hear it in this. As a song of advice this one is more strident and that is what is required for the song to fuse form with meaning. The backing music is a little pedestrian though..
these are my thoughts as well. I heard this version first, and then heard Sinatra's. couldn't find any of the emotion and wonder of the lyrics in the latter version.
Amazingly beautiful song. Love it.
It sounds epic, and memorable for me in this version, it drives me to the best places and moments of my past. Thanks, Bjork ...
I love bjork as a musician, but her voice in other people's songs sounds stupid.
this is amazing wtf
Just found this. Suburb! What an amazing version and compassionate version of the song. So important for me tonight....
This song brings back so much memories, I would play this back stage at universal studios when I went to lunch.
now i understand Bjork. ifeel i'm somewhere hearing her sing.
Sorry, but I prefer the original version by Nancy Sinatra❤️
Her voice is way too BABY-like...She sounds like a little girl, instead of a full grown woman! :(
Just wow......
i think björk's earthy textured voice goes perfectly well against the serenely dynamic instrumental. feels organic and vast.
Sorry but this arrangement sounds like a song from a Christmas movie....not a Bond film.
M.I.-SIXERS & Bond-Headz all over the world approve. Clandestinely.
OMG!! I'm so in love right now!! I've always loved this song by Nancy Sinatra, but hearing it by my lovely songbird Bjork...I love this song even more. I don't know how I missed this.😍😍😍
Very true Aaron! 👍
beautiful rendition
Amazing arrangement!!
nunca me cansare de escuchar su linda.. voz y si es de mi tema favorito mejorrr..BJORK mi niñaaaaaa
nobody wants to say it’s awful but i’m telling you this is awful. good production tho
Got to agree it's a beautiful symphony ruined by a voice better suited to grating cheese
Im sorry but she does not even touch nancy sinatra she's yelling the high notes !
I have always felt like bjork's song, "Isobel" had a distinct "you only live twice" vibe.. i was delighted to find that she had covered you only live twice :)
Superb version!!
She did a kind of bond song with is it David Arnold.i remember buying the record.but it was not.a bond theme but should of been
The Bachelorette, or maybe perhaps Play Dead?
Björk and Nina Hagen same funny crazy in the head
This song deserve to be avatar 2 sound track lol
like live in spaceship
Utterly mesmerising! Stunning!
I don't know how you can say that.
such overrated singer...
Love this version. The instrumentation has the class and nuances of the original, with additional flavor. Sinatra's has the vocalization of a mature woman, were as Bjork's has the youth and angst of a young girl. Interesting difference in dynamics and inflections.
Too bad the sound quality is poor.
Bjorn did it her way and Nancy Santana had her way but both ladies did a great job
so as an artist I should REDO Monet in Acrylic paint
+Montgomery Denzer If you like go ahead. It is not a should. Art police will not come after you unless you try to claim it is an original Monet.
But the Art Police already have my place bugged. Happy New Year art lover
There is another version of" You Only Live Twice"to this exact music sung by Natacha Atlas which is very interesting. Bjork sang this wonderfull.
Nancy's version is better - deeper and more hypnotic. This is screeching and has abrupt and randomly placed vocal emphasis to cover its blandness.
Finally someone with some sense..Nancy rules..
If You Only Live Twice was produced in the 90s, in Brosnan’s Bond era, this version will definitely be the theme song of the film!
I actually think Björk does a spectacular job of reaching all the notes! But I think the arrangement is docile by comparison. It NEEDED that rhythmatic guitar on the right & the bass guitar on the left to keep it swaying.
Oh bjork, I'll always love you, especially for this, my Bond girl 😘❤️🌷
I like the song by Nancy Sinatra
I also like Lorraine chandlers version
Little Anthony and the Imperials. The original version apparently.
Oh dear god, that was something else! Among the greatest composers of the past 2,000years. Original was perfect until I saw this
There's a version of this with Ofra Haza singing. I can't find it anymore.
This is such a tough song to sing. Nancy Sinatra said that the song frightened her because she knew she couldn't sing it like the pop songs she had been doing before. She had to do it like a true stand up singer...you know, just the artist and the orchestra and hit all of the technical parts and all of the notes. YOLT is one of the best examples of that kind of song. I still give Bjork credit for recording her version...takes guts to sing it.
What do you say about Coldplay´s version ? To me, that´s a complete disaster.
The original poem from Fleming's book (Bond's attempt to write a haiku but with the wrong syllable count):
You only live twice
Once when you are born
And once when you stare death in the face
Say what you will, but this lovely girl absolutely throws this song into the ethereal. So beautiful! But I will admit, every time I hear this song, I keep thinking I will her occasional chirp like she does with some of her other songs.
Nancy sing it beautifully like in the real concert. While Bjork sing it as she fly high into the dream, her soul follow the stream of the forth dimention.
This is amazing.
boy am i disappointed with this version this truly is NOT good I think she has a good voice but the arrangement isnt the best with taht space age sound effects i DIDNT get into not sexy like the original sorry!
It’s not trying to be. It’s Bjork’s interpretation of the original. Go listen to any of her other songs and you’ll grasp her signature style.
what about this song is supposed to be "sexy"??
Björk should get her own Bond theme.
The only Bondsong ever!
You can actually understand what she's singing and she does a decent job with this cover. I had no idea she covered this lol.
It's not eclectic enough for Bjork, sorry.
Brillante y muuuuuuy lenta, perdió todo el glamour de los 60's...
Does anyone know where I can find the physical release of this collaboration? Or was there not one? 😢
Après la chute du mur de Berlin on ne doit plus mourir pour la France , mais vivre pour l'Allemagne...
This is an awful performance of the classic. She isn't that good of a singer to begin with, and she hasn't a clue of how to deliver the song in the smooth, dreamlike, lulling style it was meant to be. This ruffles my feathers to say the least. Sinatra's version IS hands down the definitive and best!
She is too young, but I think her version would have been more effective for the movie.
