Spot on ❤️ we need more people like you in the reptile hobby, I have uvb in all of reptiles enclosures non of which out be your usual UVB species, we need to make it the norm. It goes above and beyond reptiles as well, I also keep lots of rodents many of which are never kept properly either. I would love to see correct husbandry for every single exotic captivity bred species reptiles, inverts and mammals alike ❤️
Great video as always. Points well made. This isn't the hobby most of us know and isn't the future of the hobby. Of course it makes "good TV" but, rather fortunately, the younger generation would rather watch UA-cam. This way of keeping will die out with new keepers able to access more info than ever. The future is very bright thanks to channels like yours.
Well said. Captivity should be a middle ground where the animal has enrichment but doesn’t have to fear injury or death by predators. It shouldn’t be an opposite extreme from the wild where they have 0 enrichment just because they don’t need to travel miles for food. Captivity simply means that they don’t need as much space and activities as they would in the wild, it doesn’t mean that they don’t need space and enrichment at all.
i have often thought, when these kinds of things appear, that we as a hobby should be trying to shine a light on the better aspects in the media. it always seems so one sided, and in favour of the negative. then i remember that the general public just dont care to see the proper side of things. its more dramatic and easier to sell the worst of something than the best. which is a pitiful reflection of society in general. nice one for keeping the counter voice going. its good to show that people inside the hobby hate seeing that kind of thing too.
@@SnakesNAdders No worries, you’re under no obligations to give everyone under the sun a shoutout, I’m sure there’s a long list of people more progressive than myself you could have mentioned but didn’t! But - thanks very much! 😊
I’m in the US and I watch your channel regularly. I really like your approach and how you don’t talk down to people. That being said. What the heck happened?
I'm in the states and I watch you regularly. I'm not sure what this is a response to, but I'm very interested. I spend a lot of time and energy educating my biology students about snakes and responsible snake-keeping.
Hi Greg Meissner... There was a documentary on UK TV called In search of Britain's lion kings, something like that. The docu dealt with lions, tigers etc but also (briefly) with other exotic pets like reptiles etc. The reptile hobby was basically shown in a less than favourable light, to say the least, due to the person they chose to "represent" the hobby.
The guy was passionate and clearly loved his annimals. They made him look more than a mad man. They guy had a mangrove snake and they made it out like it was a rattle snake
I do agree, our hobby has always been in the limelight and 99% for the wrong reasons. The problem we find ourselves in there are 100’s of people like the guy portrayed keeping them in exactly the same conditions. Even pet shops still do! They should have got more experienced people on the show to provide insight on the right care for these animals. Although one of the names you did recommend I personally wouldn’t of but I’ll leave it at that. Great vid!
While I do agree, you have to remember and Chaz pointed this out in the video, before they even made this show they knew how they wanted to portray the keepers of these animals, they where just looking for the right idiot to say yes... Outrage is great for viewing numbers and that's exactly what they got. Saddly a factual show about this hobby was never on the cards however much I think that's what it should have being.
Where my head is, ethically, is that no animal should be kept in a box, unless it’s in the absolute best interest of their wild population, and/or natural habitat, with the highest quality of life.
I posted this response to reptile research share of your brilliant vid onto Facebook... Spot on. The awful truth, though, is that the vast majority of people who saw it will absolutely believe that they watched a true representation of the hobby. Hopefully, snakes n adders will have somehow got this video to the producers etc of the program; otherwise it's just preaching to the choir and we'll just plod on... Remaining silent, and probably become more introvert about the hobby for fear of persecution/misunderstanding. I'll certainly be contacting the producers to try to encourage them to do a piece which will redress the balance, and, would urge all owners to follow suit. For the record, I love the snakes n adders channel! 100% support for this vid.
I didn't watch the program because I knew they were going to portray our hobby exactly how you described it...I can't agree with you more well said fella it's a shame they didn't use you or Jules or Dave at wrigglies but then again it wouldn't make great TV because you all know what your talking about but we would have seen some great ink 😆
Programming / "documentaries" are almost always derogatory towards exotic animal keepers. I've heard many accounts of people being lied to about the nature of the documentary or program they are being filmed for but because of the agreements they sign, they have no legal recourse when they are portrayed in a solely negative light. IMO, a lot of it has to do with numbers and ratings...fear sells, drama sells, portraying ignorant "trailer trash" (so that upper class people can make fun of them) sells. BUT, it is also to the best interest of animal rights groups that want our right to own exotics taken away to show this type of programming. It is sad that more mainstream groups aren't interested in the actual welfare of animals and improving husbandry and keeping and showing the reality of keeping exotics.
Although I fully agree with everything you have said in your response unfortunately I really do believe the reptile hobby is not as far forward as we would like to believe. You can just go look through multiple large Facebook groups and see the standard of care that is promoted, the "bio active" brigade who somehow believe a tea spoon of micro fauna is going to magically keep there vivs clean. The running joke of "you can't just have one" where people actively promote getting multiple snakes/tarantulas etc at a time for new keepers. Don't get me wrong there at some great people in the reptile community but I fully believe that a large part of it is uniformed morons who are all desperate to buy a million royal pythons at the IHS shows. I am of full believe that shows like Doncaster are actually a massive step back for the reptile community encouraging far to many basement breeders trying to make quick money and also encouraging the keeping of multiple animals in plastic boxes. I just can't and don't see how anything kept in a non see through tub is actually a pet. Sorry for the long winded mess but I worry for the future of reptile keeping.

reactive and not proactive is the big thing to take from this so many of the organizations have done bugger all for so long it needs to change

Can I get some context? I never saw the show
Good keeping makes bad TV that is all

Garry was trying to show off
Wouldn’t anyone if they was on tv showing they’re pride and joys

we have made colossal strides in husbandry in the past 30 years. its best to keep your head screwed on mate and not panic.
Tell me Chas doesn’t use racks to breed his animals. Also where do you think big reputable breeders started breeding their reptiles
