      @@flamepanda9947 Or at least have one helper who can teleport to the switches on one side, or at least extend the switchback resting track going up a 10% grade, so your timing doesn't need to be as good, in order for the train to turn back.

    in the fast and furious movie where he goes backwards he pulls the vacuum tube off the waste gate control for the turbos. The waste gate opens when the boost pressure reaches a certain height so it cant build too much pressure and risk breaking the engine. Increased boost = increased psi in the combustion chamber = more fast. And apparently the transmission was a tractor transmission so it had matching reverse gears and could maintain the same rpm in reverse

      @@Yorie1234 The London Underground originally intended to use a different type of fireless steam engines, to prevent smoke problems in the tunnels. Basically, they had ceramic bricks that were preheated and then loaded into a normal firebox. They only built one experimental design, and it was unsuccessful because the boiler feed pumps jammed and there was no way to dump the fire bricks, so it nearly exploded. Also, apparently it "was a fine, sturdy creation, but the trouble was that her boiler not only refrained from producing smoke, it produced very little steam either."

    For the back of the stops at the switchback, you could gradually raise the back up to a 10% in like 50 ft, so (1) you have more space, and (2) you don't need such a tight timing for the switch, since gravity would help the train after you get off of it.

    I have a pretty flat coal route that runs around most of the map (a lot of it on a double mainline). With a loaded 30 car coal train it takes me around 40 to 45 minutes to make the trip. I have a few switch backs over the mountain running at a 6% grade. It's more fun to operate but takes much longer despite the distance due to having to run smaller trains up the grade.

    I want to see a rematch with two people per train as that should speed up your time and the rematch load should max out the switchback route. With this small of a load the 10% is better and I what to see at what point does the load make the switchback better.

  • @lukefrost1189
    @lukefrost1189 Рік тому +9

    Kan, if you made each of the switch backs longer then you wouldn't need to have as many switches. I know you probably don't want to do this after spending so much time making it as it is, but if you did you could probably make it up the hill with only 4 switches which would be a lot faster.

    Both trains start at the Lumber yard
    Train on the switchback MUST come to a complete stop before throwing the switch and continuing
    Train taking the iron mine route must tie down their train first, park the engine, and switch to the Climax as an interchange and continue the journey.

    when a train is to destroyed to tow anywhere they whip out the torches and cut it in small enough parts to load onto another bucket train cart... if the rails are to damaged they hopefully can get some CDL sized truck to where its at but then it has to be cut up even smaller. if that's not possible its pickup trucks atvs or if deemed to crashed in a spot that doesn't interfere with transit or nature due to pollution they will leave the wreckage but this is exceptionally rare of a scenario and i think has only happened 1-2 times in history and it was during steam engine days new trains are to pollutant to just leave in nature unless its just a cart that its pulling. but nowadays regardless at least the engine and carts for the engines have to be removed no matter what. also nowadays its rare for tracks to just be in the middle of nowhere there's usually roads close nowadays

  • @N00dleMeister
    @N00dleMeister Рік тому +1

    So the switchback is only faster if the train is heavy enough that you have to double the 10%, but Hyce still wins if the amount of helpers increase. Remember, you can fit 4 gear engines in the shed at the helper station, that will pull a pretty substantial train up the 10%. Either way, I'm team 10% all the way 😉
    And I'll repost my questions from the last time I asked them, just make sure to write them down this time 😉
    - Ask Hyce about the Double Fairlies and why they were so great.
    - Ask about Cab-forward steam locomotives and why they were also great.
    - Ask what he knows about the crash at Crush, Texas, and if something similar was ever done on the D&RG.

    the title says Identical trains, technically they are not identical, Hyce runs the Glenbrook, while KAN runs the class 48 and not only that, Hyce has to add the climax to his train during the race just to make it up the 10% grade. If they really wanted to see which route is best then run 2 class 48's and see, because in a way adding the climax to the Glenbrook just to make the 10% grade is cheating. kAN, I'm sorry, but I feel like you should delete the switchback. (Also, ask Hyce about what he think the future of railroading may be.)
