How can someone that was extremely popular be "very underrated"?

      @@redblade8160
Benny Hill was underrated because he was not considered a megastar even though he had megastar qualities. He was never a leading man in a movie and although he was a decent singer he was never number one on the charts. And finally, and this part hurts a bit but anyone who has watched at least 80% of Hills work, you will notice him repeating jokes and songs quite often. The man was a genius and spoke several languages quite fluently, French, German and Spanish I noticed mostly.

You need to get your facts straight instead of talking out of your backside!
Benny Hill did get to number one; he topped the UK Singles Chart in December 1971, with "Ernie (the fastest milkman in the west). And Benny Hill was not "underrated", he was very popular and just because he spoke 3 other languages fluently (so you say) does not make him a genius.

In 1982, as a young buck of 17, I was leaning over a first floor scaffold surrounding a building in Kensington…..taking a breather and having a sneaky smoke. I looked down and saw Benny Hill walking along the road eating a Picnic Bar. He was just strolling along enjoying the moment. I rushed to find my workmates and told them and they didn’t believe me….. Weirdly I saw Lance Percival that day too ! He was walking a dog (or dogs, it was a long time ago and memory fades), I didn’t bother mentioning that to my workmates.
London’s like that, you walk around attending to your own business and a celebrity walks past, it brightens the day.

Benny was very popular outside the UK, which is rare for a British comedian. Thames Television sacked Benny in 1989 when politically correct bosses didn't renew his contract. After audiences demanded he be reinstated, Central Television sent him a new contract for a series of TV specials in 1992. Benny passed away the same day the contract arrived in the post.
