      @Θ.Σ.Κ.30 ΙΙ That's exactly why, in a non ideal world (like ours), the only way of keeping peace is being prepared for war (thus, having an army). It would be great though not needing them, but we do as of this moment

    • @Luredreier
      @Luredreier 2 роки тому +4

      @@gpmscosta It depends on the country.
      Some countries have no real reason to have a army, others most definitively do.
      Norway unfortunately borders Russia since Finland lost the winter war...
      That... complicates... things...
      We still have for the most part managed to have a *relatively* good relationship with them...
      Although relations are definitively colder now then they used to be...
      Indeed we probably had a better relationship with the USSR then we do Russia today despite being a NATO member, both back then and now...

      Canada has a small military for a country of its size economically and geographical, since the US would realistically defend it from an invasion in a realistic scenario.

    When the countries with no militaries are also one of the most peaceful countries.....

    • @sofiaormbustad7467
      @sofiaormbustad7467 2 роки тому +9

      Yes, but also. Many of the countries invaded by Germany or the Soviet union had very small armies (Norway had tried to disolve their army in 1929, Denmark surrendered in less than 6 hours, the baltic states were pretty much in the same state and Luxembourg well, just got overrunned wothout much fighting afaik. Also, both the vatican and San Marino were attacked by german troops retreating from Italy in 1944). So Europe, after experiencing two wars just utterly destroying their continent, realized they had to keep a large army because one aggressor can take down dousins of pacifist countries. Latin America has been fairly lucky not having had many wars, due to USA interviening in their back yard; although atleast two wars come to mind (the war between Paraguay vs Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. And Chile vs Bolivia and Peru. Though there have been many more, like the Chaco war, the Acre rebellion, the Ecuador-Peruvian war, the football war, and alot of rebelions in Mexico). And same goes for the pacific. Those small countries are basicaly american protectorates and thus live under their shield and protection, same goes for Europe. There's a reason like Tannu Tuva isn't an independent demilitarized country, or Bahrain, or Brunei, or Singapore, or Burundi (although Mauritius and the Sechelles being demilitarized kinda surprised me, but it makes sense being so close to both british, american and even french protection (and India never really being a threat to them).
      Although the world would be great if there were no armies or wars!

    Hi. You forgot that Japan has only a limited Self Defence Force and relies on the US army bases in Okinawa. There’re discusscusions around changing the article 9 in the constitution (the article that says that Japan renounces armed conflict and will not have army) or redefining it, but as far as I know Japan still doesn’t have a proper army.

    Fun Fact: New Zealand has steadily reduced its military since the 1980s itself, instead relying on defense agreements with Australia more and more. So any countries which have defense treaties with New Zealand, basically rely on Australia for defense too, even if not directly.

    If anyone is wondering the penguin is a Brigadier in the Norwegian army and he lives in Edinburgh zoo- I don't know how or why but thats the situation regarding that.
    Also, a couple of them nations you mentioned don't have a standing army because the British Army recruits them.

    Pitcairn Islands would be another. It's a British Territory that is like halfway between Australia and South America. The UK is responsible for their defense. In population in 2021 was 47 people, so it wouldn't be easy to establish a military force.

    It always catches me a little off guard the way people pronounce St Lucia. Before recently, I'd only heard my mum, someone who studied Scandinavian languages, say it, and she pronounces it like "Santa Louseea". Not sure if this is true for other Scandinavian language speakers. Only recently did I hear the "Saint Lusha" pronunciation.

    The Icelandic coast guard has been involved in at least 3 conflicts with UK.
    Let's not forget the Cod Wars ;)
    The Icelandic Coast Guard even had a special weapon deployed to stop UK from fishing in Icelandic waters.
    Also at the end of the conflict (which Iceland wun all the time) Iceland got all its demands and now every nation that has implemented what Iceland wanted for themselves. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod_Wars
