Great content. I’ll offer the solution to all these injury and knee pain issues. Speaking as a former powerlifter with a 550 Squat, now near age 50. BTW, I have no knee issues and still move some good iron.
Here are the laws of leg training all should use:
1.) Do a Dynamic movement warmup always. But only Very light stretching preworkout. You don’t want loose joints when you load up compound movements. Save the excessive stretching for after workouts.
2.) MOVE THE WEIGHT SLOWLY, all squatting and presses. At least 2-3 seconds down, brief pause, 2-3 up. Don’t pay attention to anyone doing or advising otherwise.
2.) There’s an OCCASIONAL time to go very heavy, but reduce your range of motion for it, and do it rarely (it is very costly to your body). i.e. once or twice a month half squats slowly with +20% training weights and wrapped knees.
3.) Go your heaviest on legs once a week, at most. The other workouts are lighter, and lower exertion ‘feel’ workouts.
4.) TRAIN LEGS FREQUENTLY. Your body gets better at a movement done often. This helps keep you injury-free. At least 2, if not 3 weekly.
5.) Your should be able to hold your normal training weights at the bottom stock still for 2-3 seconds, and get right back up in good form. Re-determine your Max with that weight. It may reduce your weights by 25%. Go with it. You’ll actually progress better, injury-free, by way of recruiting more fibers.
6.) Eliminate all momentum. Your muscles are not engaged when you are floating the weight, and this habit will only tear up joints. Your joints want a slow loading and unloading.
You don’t actually need as much weight as you think for any exercise, esp for legs. And squatting should not hurt. Drop back to 50 lbs, retrain your habits this way, and progressively add weight. Thank me by passing on this wisdom.

Hey Rick, great show! legs are definitely one of the keys. Rich is right about that. I do calves 4 times a week along with hams and don't do quads enough. I should start getting back into squats and extensions. I just bike 6 times a week and do that for quads.I'm 53. Some great info from all your guests Ric. Especially "The Brain" as I call him. Well listing to this really hit home. injuries can incredibly decay your workouts. I recently had surgury on my left knee. I had torn cartilage on my left femur. unfortunately, creating microfractures is the first step, but not a guarantee fix. also, I have the exact same problem in my right knee. years of squatting and training hard. it's just rough to say no to something you did day in and day out, and I guess I took for granted. Rich made a great point...longivity over what others think or your own ego. look good unless u get paid to look incredible. life is a great gift. sometimes it takes a problem to recognize it. enjoy a good workout, but train safely

I don't like the traditional leg press because I can't get a full range of motion. I like the lying leg press. I also like barbell deadlifts (for those that can do them). I like belt squats. There is a belt squat platform that I like too. I like traditional barbell squats (for that that can do them). I find pain creams are great to apply before workouts and I find temperature to make a big difference. I like to train in a warm temperature.

I tore both of my quadricep tendons doing heavy hack squats on 9/1/2014 and I know exactly what Rich is talking about when he says he tries to do what he can that doesn't kill his knees when training legs. I can do light leg presses right now, but extensions and squats hurt my knees real bad. Are you talking about the leg press where you're on your back that works good? I'll try those. Getting old sucks and I'm only 46. Good video guys!

    • @cameroncharron8990
      @cameroncharron8990 9 років тому

Dead-lifts and good-mornings will strengthen your lower back. This will in turn increase the amount of weight you will be able to squat. Also, try more of a power lifting stance while squatting. This will take a lot of the pressure off the lower back and transfer it to where it needs to be--the glutes and hamstrings. :) Keep in mind that when changing to a new lifting technique, you may experience a temporary decrease with your 1 rep max until you adjust. :) But don't take my word for it, research these things before you start. Have fun

Cameron Charron yes definitely deadlifts, I never did them because I had lower back pain due to working as a builder. saw videos of friends doing deadlifts and thought hold on I must try to do this too, works wonders for lower back, it does get sore after a deadlift workout but I think its muscle soreness, go's away after a day or 2, nothing like the pain I had when my lower back was weaker, I think u may be experiencing lower back pain because of muscle imbalance

Fuck up ur back while squatting? Damn dude u must squat shit hahaha. Squats are a must have, but i agree with deadlifts. I know to many ppl getting injured through wrong execution.. The chance to injure in deads is higher, period

To be honest I've nothing against Rich but he really wasn't the brightest kid in the class. Lot of questionable information combined with the fact that if you didn't grow on the amount of gear he was taking then there was something very wrong. Plus there's a lot of oil in that body.

Its a young man's sport, especially the clothes and tatt thing, and even the dialogue seems kind of child-like..

I find that the oldman has a bit of a know-it-all attitude, for someone who doesn't look like he ever lifted a weight. My uncle is his age and he looks better without having trained seriously for years. And my uncle is natty.

Mark Richardson You're an idiot. This old man looks terrible. Horrible genetics

The old man was juiced to gills. Are you fucking kidding me? He probably used an Olympia level dosage for gis results. The fact that he looks awful as an old man proves my point. Genetics my ass.
