Tom Platz has "character" He has "personality". I grew up in the 70's. Started working out in 1979. A lot of these older guys in the Golden age of bodybuilding and also the next generation (like Platz) had personality and character that you could relate to. They also made an effort to disseminate their experiences with the bodybuilding culture and the bodybuilding culture admired them for that. They never looked down on anyone. They had an integrity and sincerity that doesn't exist today. Each one had a different personality but more importantly a like-able and social personality. Times, unfortunately, have changed.
I agree with almost all of your statement Nik, but not ALL the old school bodybuilders had a likeable personality! Listen to more of Ric's vids when he and guests relate anecdotes about some of them!
You are so right. "Love for others" has been replaced by "love for self". That has a very limiting effect on the depth & quality of your personality. Also when your greatest love is "love of self", your ability to communicate effectively is greatly curbed. But, that's the way of the world today. Tom came up in a time when people genuinely cared for others. Today's athletes are too wrapped up in themselves. That's why we have all this back & forth, calling each other out, etc... So much insecurity because they only focus on themselves. Bodybuilding is like any other sport/art. It goes in the direction of those personalities that make it up. Thankfully we still have some of the legends around to enjoy: Robbie, Tom, Bill, Arnold, Lou. Anyway, keep pumping!
platz was never the complete picture! he didn't have that uniformed all over size that the winners possessed. great legs great calfs but his strong points didn't out weight the weak parts
Tom is a legend and not to be mean, but do you think that he may be wearing a hair piece? That head of hair on top looks too damn good for his age lol. Lots of celebrities use them and not knocking it. As for me I have the same barber as Ric.
Great interview, listening to Platz and older generation of bbuilders makes me feel so comfortable in my skin and the lifestyle I’ve chosen, while everybody else thinks Im insane or delusional. I just feel good knowing that these guys understand. It makes me feel like Im not alone in this pursuit. I think about these guys when Im at the gym training and seeing others just texting, I wish I could go back in time and train w the oldschoolers it would be such an honor.
What an amazing video, he's so positive and fun to listen to, I could listen to his stories all day. No denying, best legs ever, but his ideas and philosophies are so full of positive energy. Rics Corner really has the best interviews ever, long may it continue. Thanks guys.
Ric: “you’re only here one time, no sense in being negative” RIP & God bless you sir. Wish we had more time but you were already an angel on earth. Learned so much from you. Thank you.
Another great interview with a legend of bodybuilding. This was right on time. I listened to the interview on the way to the gym today. Today was Leg day 😁 I got to the gym pumped up before I even walked through the door. Needless to say, had a very brutal workout. I kept hearing Tom in my ear saying one more rep, one more rep. Anyway, great interview 😊
Thanks for this interview Ric Don’t know if it’s just that Platz is an icon at the very top of my list or just the way he comes across but what a gentleman and champion! I feel privileged just to watch!
Ric: Your first hand experience and stories, along with your interviews of these bodybuilding legends, are priceless. Thank you very much for preserving everything about the Golden Era of Bodybuilding.
I went to a Tom Platz seminar in Newport news golds jim he talked over two hours answered every question and then sighned autagraphs,he passed out pamplets the power of the mind.truly a class act this was after he placed 3rd at the Olympia and after he had tore his bicep it had healed he dressed modestly pulled up his sleeze and barly flexed it looked like a mash potatoe lump.thanks Ric
g wellgreat interview i worked out at golds in kansas in the 80s i couldnt ever seem to bulld much muscle mass but i was always in awe of what tom and all the others of that era were able to accomplish its great to hear that tom is doing well
First Franco, now PLATZ!!!! I am loving these old school interviews Ric! Fact is YOU have access to, and are doing, old school Golden Era guys no one else has access to. Get Robby too! Oh, Andreas Cahling would be awesome too. And I have asked you this before, do a video on Rick Wayne. Or better yet do a skype interview with Rick Wayne!
One of the greatest things about the show is the passion that flies through my screen and hits me right in chess it gets me excited for my own workouts to see the passion great show
Why is Platz adored, decades later? Most stars circa 1980 peaked at Mr. Universe. They turned pro, they stopped winning, their limitations became cliches. But Platz never stopped *becoming.* He was freaky but also an underdog. So a lot of us wished for his legs, but all of us envied his heart.
The first film to win an Oscar: Wings. Best film never to win an Oscar: It's a Wonderful Life. Everyone has heard of "Wonderful Life"...very few of "Wings." Over time, awards don't mean as much. Classics don't need awards. Neither does Tom Platz: classic.
My favorite bodybuilder of all time. RIP Ric. I miss you and your uploads. Thank you for everything you gave us and still provide. I'm going through a major shift in life right now (positive shift) and your teachings have certainly helped the transition. We miss you..
Yeah! Lovved this interview! But man. . this easily could have been 2 parts to it, just like Franco's was. Tom has too much knowledge n wisdom to keep contained for one vid under 30 min. Really enjoyed the nutritional portion of it. . something he hasn't touched on too much in most interviews. Well done! Thanks Ric!
Never get tired listening to tom, i srarted training in 70s and he was one of my main insperations, i started with deads early in my training and u can't do without them imo.never a dull moment with him, full of knowledge.
A fantastic chat. I thoroughly enjoyed that and although I usually steer away from vids over 10 mins (I save them up for when I am less busy) I clicked straight on this one and was not disappointed. It's legs day tomorrow too!
Thoroughly enjoyable! You two gentlemen remind me of why I love bodybuilding: the uncomplicated joy of the pump and the lifestyle. It has been so refreshing listening to your discussion. Thank you both so much!
Outstanding interview with Tom! I have seen him training at Golds on occasion and chatted with him - he's always convivial and let me tell you he still trains with GREAT INTENSITY.
Tom Platz, one of the nicest guys in bodybuilding, like Dorian Yates i could listen to him talk all day about bodybuilding, very knowledgeable on the subject without being boring... TOP BLOKE
I once met the Tom Platz, AKA the Golden Eagle back in 1991. He was very genuine, respectful, knowledgeable and very passionate when sharing his bodybuilding experiences. A true legend for sure!!!
Thank you Ric and Tom,great video, I'm 60 with neck injury but i'm doing what i can ,you gentlemen are true legends and an inspiration to me to get my ass in gear and train. peace from Steve from Cape Breton
Great Interview Ric and Tom. I remember training aside Tom at World's gym in '81. then seeing him drive off in his Red Vette. after his workout. The Glory days.
Thanks to Tom for coming along. My favourite things about Tom are his sincerity and honesty. Great to hear from The Golden Eagle. Ride Like The Wind Tom.
Great interview, I could listen to Tom talk for hours. Very generous of Tom to come on Ric's show to share his experiences and wealth of knowledge, especially when he wasn't feeling very well. Hope you're feeling better Tom, and keep up the great work you're doing for the world of bodybuilding.
All I have to say is that its wonderful to see 2 great men who happen to also be nice guys talking about what they are most passionate about. Great video Ric and thanks for sharing.
Tom Platz mentioned before he used to train with the olympic weightlifters when he first started out they used to refer to the squat rack as "the altar" if you ever see any of the old Weider advertisements Tom Platz is photographed doing a clean and Jerk. Tom Platz probably one of the most philosophical bodybuilders, he responded to one my emails more than ten years ago a really classy guy. Is Shelly Gruwell or Lydia Cheng still actively training or around? it would be nice to also see some female bodybuilders on aswell Ric.
RIP Big Ric. He was such a patient interviewer with such well thought out questions. He will be truly missed
RIP
I could listen to Tom Platz talk all day long.
Same. LEGEND.
RIP RIC!!
Me too bud .me too rip ric I love yiu
He has a perfect radio voice... super nice and a legend like @jure primorac said
I agree
Tom Platz has "character" He has "personality". I grew up in the 70's. Started working out in 1979. To you maybe
it's the childhood vaccination and dodgy water killing creativity.
I agree with almost all of your statement Nik, but not ALL the old school bodybuilders had a likeable personality! Listen to more of Ric's vids when he and guests relate anecdotes about some of them!

"They never look down on anyone."
That's how it should be, you know?
Ladies and Gentleman, the uncrowned 1981 Mr. Olympia! Thanks a lot Ric!
He is a Mr Olympia in my mind!
Legends say when he began he would bow before the squat rack but now it bows before him!
Robbed by bloody frank Zane and Arnold due to politics
Everybody damn well knows that either Tom or Danny Padilla are the TRUE 1981 Mr. Olympia winners.
Tom Plats the golden eagle
Tom is incredible- smart, humble, relaxed.... amazing
I've always considered Tom Platz the uncrowned 1981 Mr. Olympia. Thanks for interviewing this living legend, Ric!
platz was never the complete picture! he didn't have that uniformed all over size that the winners possessed.
great legs great calfs but his strong points didn't out weight the weak parts
@@grantswan8525 🙋♂️Bullshit
Tom Platz is one of the nicest guys ever ! A true legend ! Thanks for having him on Ric ! :-)
I absolutely love this stuff!! Thanks Ric! I miss the 70’s 80’s & 90’s bodybuilding, it sucks today.
@Re nato until 93 90s were also fantastic
Always loved the way platz talks u can see he is really passionate about bodybuilding he expresses himself a lot
Giving this a thumbs up before I even watch it.
YES!!!! Finally!!!!!!! TOM PLATZ!
Wow much awaited interview - a big thank you to legendary Tom Platz as well as to Great Ric Drasin for making this happen!!! :)
The term Legend is bandied about very easily... but Tom is indeed a true legend of bodybuilding!
Jealous hamstrings everywhere.
Spot on. And not just a legend, this guy is a treasure. Listening to him always inspires you.
Still passionate about the bb lifestyle ,what a legend.
IFBB should give honorably Tom Platz and Danny Padilla a Mr O title .They ve earned it and deserve it
Everyone I new who was at the 1981 Mr O in person said Platz had it in the bag. Danny and Roy both should have been in the top 3.
Ifbb would never admit they screwed up. 1981 Olympia was a complete farce.
Danny was cheated! What a blow that must have been. He must have not been in the CLUB.
@Kevin Michael That's so true. He was bow legged, and weak. He had 8itch tits too. Not dissing Franco, he was great in the day, but not at this show.
Best legs ever. See him and so many memories come up. From his early days to me , being in my twenties during the 90's bodybuilding .
quadzilla lives... full head of hair and looks phenomenal
great interview rick
Muscle Monster *quadfather
Tom is a legend and not to be mean, but do you think that he may be wearing a hair piece? That head of hair on top looks too damn good for his age lol. Lots of celebrities use them and not knocking it. As for me I have the same barber as Ric.
Some dudes are just lucky that way. My uncle had a full head of hair at 90.
Jack Beddows bro that is a “hair piece” look very closely. Not that there is anything wrong with it. To each their own.
maybe so. I have no idea.
Great interview, listening to Platz and older generation of bbuilders makes me feel so comfortable in my skin and the lifestyle I’ve chosen, while everybody else thinks Im insane or delusional. Tom is such a captivating speaker. His book with Bob Kennedy was the first I ever got when I was about 14.
Keep the comments on these shows I we know he passed but we still imagine hes still here we love these videos condolences to
Ric: “you’re only here one time, no sense in being negative” RIP & God bless you sir. Wish we had more time but you were already an angel on earth. Learned so much from you. Thank you.

Great interview. Tom Platz was my hero in the 80's and still is today.

Great interview. I too miss the old days in the Gym.
Two legends together again. Awesome!
Brilliant interview. Tom is a real legend. They don't build like that anymore. Thank you Ric for getting great onto your show. Respect
He's of course known for his legs, but given his genetics, he built a hell of an upper body as well.
No Doubt , his upper body was awesome in 81'- 85' his chest and back were top notch and massive
The guy is hypnotic. Should have been crowned Mr.O.
I can listen to Tom Platz talk about anything and I would never get bored of him. His passion for bodybuilding and in life is through the roof.
What a total legend, Tom platz had the best legs ever. Really enjoyed this interview with him. Keep up the good work tom.

His legs still look insane... what a legend. Man I gotta meet this guy at least once.

Saw Tom train at Muscle Machine gym , Birmingham, UK back in the 80s. True legend.
You just do not get conversation like this from people who are really sharing their wisdom. So thankful for Mr. Platz.
Finally, the Golden Eagle lands! Ric rules, plain and simple. We love you, Ric!
Thanks to Tom for coming along. My favourite things about Tom are his sincerity and honesty. Great to hear from The Golden Eagle. Ride Like The Wind Tom.

A legend...an inspiration to this 59 year old! I've been a fan for decades.
