My great grandfather served in the Navy in World War 2 and was on the USS California. He was involved in the battle of Surigao strait. A kamikaze hit the California and he received major third degree burns, and had to return to New Guinea for the rest of the war to recover. Both of my grandfathers were in Vietnam, one was a AC130 mechanic in the Air Force, and the other was in the 101st Airborne division in the army. Such great stories that need to be remembered. Thanks for the video!

A few of them feel like white lies to save face here and there. Still entertaining.

That was amazing. That was a really, really good video. For an hour long documentary you were able to fit so much information in, and while I wish you could have focused a bit more on how certain wars raged on outside of direct American battles, this was really enlightening and the production quality was just great. Born and raised in Sackets Harbor and live right near the famous battlefield of 1812! So much history in such a little village that I’m proud to call home.
@@bigolboomerbelly4348Canada didn’t exist until 50 years later give or take. The British fought the Americans (mostly) in the ‘War of 1812.’ The others who fought were native. The idea that Canada fought in and won the War of 1812 is like me saying that America won the 7 years war.
After watching this, I don’t understand how ANYBODY can disrespect veterans. How many lives were lost fighting for our country, our freedom, our values, and our God? Too many!! God bless everyone who has fought and served in our country’s military. They are all special people deserving the upmost respect and gratitude.

This was excellent story telling! I have seen quite a few "documentaries" that have had a agenda and it really diminishes ones curiosity and takes away from the learning experience. This was neutral toned through-out and executed brilliantly. We need more educational series like this!
This is one of the easiest summaries of the French and Indian War I could present to students. Well executed. The only minor suggestion I would offer is to actually add a tint to the shading to show which sides exerted practical control over which region. At 2:08, a red or blue tint would help students decipher the visual regions claimed by both the French and the British, for example. Please don't mistake this as a criticism as this video is already very helpful... I'm just wishing for perfection in the classroom with students who are still learning the geography/topography of the United States.

Battles are not the way to teach American history. There should be specific courses for military history especially for those headed to the military academies, but not for the general population. What is needed is putting the history of the Americas into world context. That ends with the French & Indian War. Hard to believe but our Revolution allowed Russia to absorb Ukraine and destroy the first parliamentary Commonwealth in Europe: Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Why do you think Pulaski & Kosciusko were in the US? The Czar had defeated them but they heard the US was promising the freedoms they had just lost.

This is months old and you might not see this but I was taught this already but you have made this so much better then any history class I have been in keep up the amazing work
I agree this video was very well done and very difficult to compress about 200 years into less than one hour. My only suggestions would have been to add a view things: 1) Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian army officer who served as inspector general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and helped teach the Continental Army the essentials of military drill and discipline, helping guide it to victory. There were also 30,000 Hessian soldiers that fought along side of the British. 2) Native Americans fought as scouts in the Indian wars but later were kicked out of the military when they were no longer needed. 3) I don't think that the island of Guam or Hawaii were mentioned clearly as becoming territories in 1898 4) the Banana wars after 1898 in Central America and Caribbean. 5) the 1900 Boxer Rebellion in China; 6) thousands of Americans faught with British and the French prior to 1917 even though the USA was technically neutral; 7) The USA landed about 3,000 troops in Russia in 1918 and fought near Vladivostok. 8) I would also add the contributions of Flying Tigers in 1941. 9) over 125,000 Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps by FDR in 1942-46 but Japanese Americans in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442 Infantry Regiment fought in Europe. The 442nd was the most decorated American unit of the war. 10) Native Americans volunteered and faught in WW2. 11) mention the battles in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska during 1942-43.

They have raised money to support and grow these American battlefields like no other organization I am aware of. With access to the best historians and years of knowledge at their disposal I never have to wonder if what they are telling me is correct. So yes, in my opinion they are the GOLD STANDARD for historical content. And I stand by it.

This video leaves out the largest and most widespread Plains Indian Wars of 1863 - 1869, starting with the Santee uprising of 1862, the Dakota Wars of 1864-65, the huge and relatively simultaneous Sioux-Cheyenne-Arapaho uprisings in the wake of the Sand Creek Massacre that rage from Oklahoma to Montana, and ending with singular Indian victory of Red Cloud's War. These overlapping conflicts involved over 15,000 troops and as many as 3,500 Indian combatants.
the Cherokee covered quiet a swath of land on their own; kinda makes U mad that taxes became a permanent tool for the gov't to enslave us to the wardogs
@@PhongJr.934 ABT has a longer video covering American wars that include the colonial period. I don’t yet understand it all but The Creek, Cherokee, Six Nations involvements were not so cleanly for or against the Brits, the French or the Revolutionary era colonial history.
Britain took their eye of the ball. They didn't think their citizens in the 13 colonies would revolt and didn't expect both France and Spain to help the rebels. If they'd known what the 13 colonies would become I doubt that financial problems would have worried them to the extent it did and they would have taken it more seriously. As it was it shocked some in the government and the King but the people of Britain if anything sided with the revolutionaries. Some areas in Britain like the famous American Ground in Hastings on the South coast of England declared independence and tried to join the new USA.
Hmm.. actually it is more a US propaganda movie then accurate. If you really into US history I think you need to seek other other sources than US is so awesome, - we skip all the bad facts of the US - we are unable to use correct maps - ones.

In the late 1960,s. My neighbor Across the street was in World war 1 , I remember some of his captured spoils of war he showed me from the Germans and I remember him telling me his grandfather was in the civil war 🇺🇸

Excellent Summary of how the US Came to Be and how we arrived here at 1945. Your video is a great summary without getting into the details of every battle, war, or conflict as a country we have been involved in up to 1945, I have subscribed to your channel and hope to watch more of your videos.
Some of my favorite topics to read about is the world wars. I’ve learned the maps of Europe from pretty much just those alone. And also the Smithsonian books and from the WWI gaming series. I think the maps of Europe are so interesting. I hope you guys do more eventually, like other European wars, but I guess that wouldn’t make sense, but would be cool still!
This is well done. I am impressed. No sugar coating. No political leaning, just the highlights. It's astounding that this even mentioned the barberry wars, instead of just being a star spangled representation of US history.
Wish they included things like Lafayette or Baron von Steuben in the Revolutionary War or included more details on the Indian Wars and the American-Philippines War. The last one was particularly forgotten in US history.
This really puts into perspective what our ancestors had to go through to build and mold our country. It wasn’t always easy, a lot of mistakes were made, a lot was lost, and sometimes, bad things happened (not trying to downplay anything). Though we stumble, we still have our flaws and problems, and we might look around and not always like what we see, this is still our home, our country and it’s up to us to ensure a bright future, just like those who came before us.

I went on a spontaneous trip to Put-In-Bay because I was visiting Ohio from Indiana one time. I learned about the naval battles in the area that I never knew about! Interesting place!
4 different invasions into Canada, all repulsed, including Niagara. They also failed to mention the burning of the White House was in retaliation for the sacking of York (Toronto) in winter. Americans call it a draw. lol
Fantastic video. I will have my kids watch this to get a basic understanding of the history of this great nation, and the sacrifices made by all those brave soldiers, and their families. Our history should be told, pointing out the true history of our country, for better, or worse.
"True history" of our country is a right wing dogwhistle of a phrase that attacks all the hard-working schoolteachers across the country. It's typically uttered by grown adults who haven't been in school in decades, and who haven't paid any attention when they were in school decades ago. It's also rather ironic for someone to praise this video so vehemently to also then brag about using this to teach "true US history." This is just a very brief, and sometimes misleading (see the sections of the World Wars that leaves out the contributions and names of "the allies" while only specifically mentioning the US. It doesn't even give the Soviet Union any credit, except a blue shade.)

I agree this video was very well done and very difficult to compress about 200 years into less than one hour.
My only suggestions would have been to add a view things:
1) Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian army officer who served as inspector general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and helped teach the Continental Army the essentials of military drill and discipline, helping guide it to victory. There were also 30,000 Hessian soldiers that fought along side of the British.
2) Native Americans fought as scouts in the Indian wars but later were kicked out of the military when they were no longer needed.
3) I don't think that the island of Guam or Hawaii were mentioned clearly as becoming territories in 1898
4) the Banana wars after 1898 in Central America and Caribbean.
5) the 1900 Boxer Rebellion in China;
6) thousands of Americans faught with British and the French prior to 1917 even though the USA was technically neutral;
7) The USA landed about 3,000 troops in Russia in 1918 and fought near Vladivostok.
8) I would also add the contributions of Flying Tigers in 1941.
9) over 125,000 Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps by FDR in 1942-46 but Japanese Americans in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442 Infantry Regiment fought in Europe. The 442nd was the most decorated American unit of the war.
10) Native Americans volunteered and faught in WW2.
11) mention the battles in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska during 1942-43.
More content like this please. There is nothing else like it.

@@Nihilianth The American Battlefield Trust has been making historical content for years. They have raised money to support and grow these American battlefields like no other organization I am aware of. With access to the best historians and years of knowledge at their disposal I never have to wonder if what they are telling me is correct. So yes, in my opinion they are the GOLD STANDARD for historical content. And I stand by it.

This video leaves out the largest and most widespread Plains Indian Wars of 1863 - 1869, starting with the Santee uprising of 1862, the Dakota Wars of 1864-65, the huge and relatively simultaneous Sioux-Cheyenne-Arapaho uprisings in the wake of the Sand Creek Massacre that rage from Oklahoma to Montana, and ending with singular Indian victory of Red Cloud's War. These overlapping conflicts involved over 15,000 troops and as many as 3,500 Indian combatants.
FWIW, I was unaware of the involvement of either the Cherokee nation or the Six Nations in the Revolutionary War on behalf of the British government.
the Cherokee covered quiet a swath of land on their own; kinda makes U mad that taxes became a permanent tool for the gov't to enslave us to the wardogs
@@PhongJr.934 ABT has a longer video covering American wars that include the colonial period. I don’t yet understand it all but The Creek, Cherokee, Six Nations involvements were not so cleanly for or against the Brits, the French or the Revolutionary era colonial history.

Britain took their eye of the ball. They didn't think their citizens in the 13 colonies would revolt and didn't expect both France and Spain to help the rebels. If they'd known what the 13 colonies would become I doubt that financial problems would have worried them to the extent it did and they would have taken it more seriously. As it was it shocked some in the government and the King but the people of Britain if anything sided with the revolutionaries. Some areas in Britain like the famous American Ground in Hastings on the South coast of England declared independence and tried to join the new USA.
Hmm.. actually it is more a US propaganda movie then accurate. If you really into US history I think you need to seek other other sources than US is so awesome, - we skip all the bad facts of the US - we are unable to use correct maps - ones.

Some of my favorite topics to read about is the world wars. I’ve learned the maps of Europe from pretty much just those alone. And also the Smithsonian books and from the WWI gaming series. I think the maps of Europe are so interesting. I hope you guys do more eventually, like other European wars, but I guess that wouldn’t make sense, but would be cool still!

This is well done. I am impressed. No sugar coating. No political leaning, just the highlights. It's astounding that this even mentioned the barberry wars, instead of just being a star spangled representation of US history.
Wish they included things like Lafayette or Baron von Steuben in the Revolutionary War or included more details on the Indian Wars and the American-Philippines War. The last one was particularly forgotten in US history.

Gets to 15 minutes in and I am already exceptionally impressed. Not a lot of people would’ve included the quasi war.
This really puts into perspective what our ancestors had to go through to build and mold our country. It wasn’t always easy, a lot of mistakes were made, a lot was lost, and sometimes, bad things happened (not trying to downplay anything). Though we stumble, we still have our flaws and problems, and we might look around and not always like what we see, this is still our home, our country and it’s up to us to ensure a bright future, just like those who came before us.
As a veteran, I agree. It’s agonizing to see that our current administration has a different agenda.

I went on a spontaneous trip to Put-In-Bay because I was visiting Ohio from Indiana one time. I learned about the naval battles in the area that I never knew about! Interesting place!
4 different invasions into Canada, all repulsed, including Niagara. They also failed to mention the burning of the White House was in retaliation for the sacking of York (Toronto) in winter. Americans call it a draw. lol

Fantastic video. I will have my kids watch this to get a basic understanding of the history of this great nation, and the sacrifices made by all those brave soldiers, and their families. Our history should be told, pointing out the true history of our country, for better, or worse.
"True history" of our country is a right wing dogwhistle of a phrase that attacks all the hard-working schoolteachers across the country. It's typically uttered by grown adults who haven't been in school in decades, and who haven't paid any attention when they were in school decades ago. It's also rather ironic for someone to praise this video so vehemently to also then brag about using this to teach "true US history." This is just a very brief, and sometimes misleading (see the sections of the World Wars that leaves out the contributions and names of "the allies" while only specifically mentioning the US. It doesn't even give the Soviet Union any credit, except a blue shade.)
