How bad is my $400 Toyota Tacoma?

  • So this gem of a video has been floating around on the back burner for a very long time. What ended up happening was I drove the truck like you see. Then after the noise came and made itself apparent that it wasn't going away, we continued to drive the truck! It made trips to get lunch , to the parts store and so on. Just cruising around like nobody's business! I do assume at some point down the road the engine will need an overhaul or a replacement, but until that day comes we will just let it rack up miles.

How true, even in my area these trucks bring over 2k when they are just rolling junkyard ads, ive got a 2000 truck just like this but mine is black, had someone offer me 4k without even knowing its history, just assuming because it looked clean and shiny it was perfect, which to be fair it is perfect no trouble at all, but my workmate bought a 04 with the 4 cylinder, knocking to high hell, no radio and beat up and payed 2k for the pleasure, which is why when i bought my mini work truck i went for a nissan hardbody from 1986 payed 1000 for it was 110 thousand and 5 screaming gears and no air con, but i avoided the toyota tax.

In any condition rust bucket, or doesn't have a drivetrain, 2wd,4wd they price them like your buying a new used car at the dealership. Were I'm from ads would say. Rolling chassis no drivetrain. Especially clean truck never gave any issues. Has a clean title. Just swap in your drivetrain of choice. It would also be a good idea if you replace the frame and bed due to very "little rust" to be a very nice daily driver. I will not come down. No OBO 5k I know exactly what I have. So don't ask. Please no tire kicker's.

I know that this is a two year old video, but if someone stumbles upon this and has this issue, check the camshafts. Exhaust camshaft is geared to the intake (hence the reason the timing belt only goes around one cam gear per side) with a sprung two-piece gear. The spring inside the gear can fail and allow the exhaust cam to rattle. When you removed the cams, you're supposed to put a 8x1.25 bolt in the sprung camshaft gear to make reassembly easier. Just food for thought.
Cruise like that is a dealer add-on accessory, when you had to add keyless entry/alarms, upgraded radios, etc. The good old days!
I learned to drive on a 1996 Tacoma, 4 cylinder 5-speed 4x4. I'd love this truck (easy to make 4x4 since it's a PreRunner). I have a 1997 4Runner now. Bought during COVID to flip needing an engine, $1050 towed to my house. Sketchy $400 engine and it's still running strong and now an offroad toy during daily duties. Good stuff.

That looks like a freaking GREAT (if old) truck. You can NOT go wrong with a toyota like that, but check the frame for rot. They're NOTORIOUS for the frame rotting out. If you find yourself in that situation, you should repair the frame on that truck. The shell of that one is in great shape, and its worth putting interior pieces into it, to get it a bit nicer, I'd say. No, it's never going to be a show piece, or perfect, but it doesn't have to be because it's a truck. I wish I had bumped into that for $400! Even if/when you have to drop a different motor in it, still totally worth 4 bones. Be well, and thanks for the great content.

I know for a fact on market place and some of car lots I roll past here in south bend indiana, some Real pos's going for insane amounts, hell I stopped by a lot that had a ragged out Nissan Sentra one year newer than mine and within a week it sold for about $2,800, and mine is a 2000 with 152,000 miles and that one had like 181,000 miles. Near=identical to my truck! Same year and body style. But mine is 4-cyl, not pre-runner, and manual shift. Bought it in 2005. It has about 188,800 miles on it. Engine makes the same funny noise, but it just runs and runs. Lucas in the oil helps a lot. After 5 mechanics mis-diagnosed the problem, I just added the Lucas, and that keeps it under control. People keep asking, "Aren't you afraid the engine will blow up?" I tell them, "You can't kill those Toyota engines- they're too strong!"

Still runs like a champ with 280 thousand on the clock, only issue i know of right now is that when its really cold like 20 degree day type stuff the engine does tick for a few minutes, but otherwise still runs and drives great and has tons of power.

Damn Jay! How'd you manage to steal that truck for $400, even WITH the motor noise? You should have titled this video "How GOOD is my $400 Toyota Tacoma?" That body is good enough to easily warrant a replacement motor if necessary. Cheap fixes that you might do are...
1...Roust up a matching left rear wheel from your "inventory"
2...Likewise a matching yellow, or black, door handle (or perhaps paint to match)
3...Righteously attach that taped on trim piece
    4...Seat covers (esp driver's seat)
5...Clean the headlight lenses (for safety and appearance)
    6...Buff it out
7...Stick a tiny rubber ball between the dash and the windshield to nix dash noise
8...Replace that motor sound deadener on the hood
9...Have you tried "Marvel Mystery Oil" to try to get rid of that wrist pin noise?

Great video my parents or well my self has a 1995 Toyota Tacoma sr5 4x4 5 SPD V6 and that truck is amazing with only 100k miles on it same color as the one your driving and the inside is like grey with a sunroof and I pretty much been trying to take care of just that it's so old in a good way it's been with the family for 21 years and it's in great condition no rust on the body or the frame as well just surface rust in any vehicle! I'll be doing a video soon on my channel for the Tacoma but good video I really enjoy watching your videos! 🙂🚘

Is that silver wagon in your parking lot an e39? You're in the EXACT right place to have access to lots of GREAT BMW's. With the plant in Spartanburg, all the executives got great examples which over time are in your market. Yeah, they're sometimes a pain in the you-kno-what, but they're also realllly fun cars to drive. The e36, e39, are easy and cheap to get parts for. The ones after that have higher parts prices and the fail rate on everything increases exponentially for anything with an M badge. Sadly the plastic pieces are what these suffer for, along with wiring. Cooling systems are a bit weak or often times problematic. Once you know where the pain points are, and just resolve them, they work like any car. Prices on these cars have been climbing too. Not many used cars have that going for them.
That truck would sell for 3-4k here, as is, and I would say add 2k if the motor was completely SILENT. Which it honestly should be completely silent on THAT toyota, and it can be, if you wanted it to be that way. With it running like it is, and because of what it is, going through it now will save you a catastrophic failure later. Is rebuilding an engine fun? Nope. This truck would probably be worth pulling the motor and having it rebuilt, if you were going to keep it for years. Most cars/trucks are just throw-away to most people now. This is one of the last where you can cheaply keep it going forever, with a very low cost of operation, WHILE still maintaining the vehicle. Prices on these trucks will rise, I think. I would keep it, and fix it, and sell it for 7k. Throw better interior parts in it, like seats. Replace that tan door handle which is bound to snap in two at any moment, haha. Maybe a set of junkyard wheels on it, nothing too amazing, just something that would fit the tires and match all the way around. This truck, with a brand new motor is worth 7k, easy.

That Wagon has a blown motor. Its for sale. We really dont want to put an engine in it, just want the thing to leave. Its taking up valuable space. Im so burned out BMWs its not funny.

    • @WareWolf801
      @WareWolf801 3 роки тому

@@MXguy95 That is a bummer. BMW's are not usually that hard to pull and replace a motor.. If only I was close by.. I'd love to have a working car.

  • @GeorgeSemel

I think it's worth fixing, I live in CT, so it's a 2 x 4 It would sell for at least 2500. It being in good shape, as it is maybe another 1K could be tacked on. With what new costs, with just the sales tax, registration, and interest on the note. I could get it rebuilt and then drive it for another 20 years.

Personally, I'd clean it up and register it if the cash isn't needed now. Drive it when you don't need to run the dirty Dodges and the Stranger isn't available. If the tick/slap doesn't go away, but doesn't get worse, then keep driving. If it gets worse, either swap in a Japanese market longblock with 50ish K miles on it, a junkyard longblock, or rebuild the current longblock.
