Thank you for another fabulous garden tour! Love your Mandevillas, especially the pink ones! Like you, I’ve gotten away from Petunias. They just require too much time and effort. I will definitely fill my containers with Mandevillas next year. I also appreciate the Gomphrena update. It is so helpful to see failures or regrets as well as successes. I continue to learn something from each video you create. Thanks again, Steph!
Thank you so much!! We currently have a mix. Some beds we have an edging stone purchased at Lowes. In other areas, we have reclaimed old cobble stone that we've collected and purchased from Craig's list, offer up, and Facebook marketplace. We would like to eventually transition the lowes edging stones to more cobblestone as we find it.
Hi Colleen, Thank you! Yes, we've been lucky with all the rain. A lot less work watering this year, which has been a nice change from our summer last year.
i always thought hibiscus was a beautiful flower, however i am in love with the red ones. i am impressed with the variety and health of ur gardens. u mix color, texture and height very well. i have some allium that looks like that. i'm wary of it being too aggressive but it doesnt seem to have taken over ur garden.
Thank you so much! The Holy Grail Hibiscus is a gorgeous red one! I made this video recently about my alliums and whether or not I find them invasive. Its a short video/quick watch if your interested: ua-cam.com/video/Ie_JdHgPXag/v-deo.htmlsi=rNwCAmYhE1ecf9TJ
You have made such wonderful choices to enhance all the garden beds this year! As always, your home and gardens are beautiful. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you so much Jane! I appreciate that. This comment had me stop to reflect on this last season. I really have done alot, more than I thought to be honest. Thank you again!!
Thanks Steff for the wonderful garden tour. You have inspired me to try out new and different flavors, shrubs and trees. I'm so grateful for your knowledge and simple explaining of what works and what doesn't. Looking forward to fall and the beautiful colors of nature.
That's right Deb. I learned that recently too, although I'm always inclined to just say mandivilla. They are great low maintenance summer annuals. Thanks for watching!
re the yellow rubekia [sp], sometimes just a bit of a color is much more attractive to us. i love bold solid colors and have collected several colors of rubekia which give me much joy. i have them scattered among my vegetables to brighten up the mass of green. ur august garden tour was great fun.
Your garden is so colourful for the end of August. The hibiscus are stunning, it’s not a shrub I’ve ever grown because my garden is mainly shade but I’m tempted to give them a go in an area that does get a couple of hours of sunlight a day. Envious also of your Japanese maples, beautiful garden and a great tour and I love your garden shed !
Hi there! Thank you so much for your kind words. I've visited your channel before, your gardens are STUNNNING!! absolutely beautiful what you've done. Thank you so much for stopping by and watching my garden tour. If you have a little bit of sun to tuck one of these hibiscus in, I think it would be worth a try. They are a beautiful later season bloomer for me. I very much enjoy it. My husband does not enjoy gardening (its my hobby lol), but he does help me alot in the garden. However, he really enjoys Japanese Maples, and Conifers. So we worked on this garden together 💚
That new garden is so great. You have a beautiful collection of conifers. I love that small yellow one in your front border. Thanks for mentioning that you’ve had that blue star juniper for 10 years, I was curious how big they get.
I love those hibiscus and the verbena verbena yeah that is so pretty too I'm hoping mine will recede I keep trying to get it to start receiving high as thirty gardens out there at memorial Park and MPA so I just love all kinds of flowers is so pretty I talk to you later I have some of the goodbye for now
Everything is looking great! I had three Ascot Rainbow euphorbia plants here in central Pennsylvania zone 6b and they were coming back every year with some looking better than others. This year I lost one but they aren't exactly in a very protected area of the garden. Also they tend to be slower to flush back during the spring plus some will bloom and others don't. Good luck!
Stunning!! Steph, everything is doing well. Thanks for sharing your garden ideas. I live in zone 6b in southern Il. I want to try some of these varieties next spring. I just decided to do some gardening(at age 76) and thoroughly enjoy it. Take care.
I agree on the white Gomphrena - the purple is better (I grew both this year myself). Your gardens and hardscapes are simply stunning Steph ~ Thanks for another great tour - so enjoyable to see all the beauty♥
Just beautiful! I was so curious about the white gomphrenas were doing. I bought the atomic purple seeds and have them in my garden this summer because you inspired me last year. They are doing great and I just love them. I am going to try the Sahara purple zinnas next year. Thanks for all of the inspiration!
The garden looks so beautiful Steph, impeccable is the word! I especially love your containers this year with the Mandeville and I agree they're so much easier than petunias😊🌼
Looks beautiful! I took some notes of combinations although my conditions near Atlanta in 7b are quite different. A wonderful job on your new garden beds!
Thank you so much Kathleen! That sounds fun, and our zones aren't so different, just 1. I'm fairly certain most of my plants would do great in your area.
I am planning a pollinator garden next summer- I must try the Joe Pye weed. Your garden is looking beautiful- love the zinnias. …. Actually, I love it all! Thank you for sharing and the inspiration.
Mulch mulch mulch that fringe flower. I’m in zone 8a and I have those. A hard frost in December killed all my Lavender and I thought my fringe flower. It started growing back but it’s very slow. So protect it!!
Hi Barbara, thank you so much for the advise. I certainly plan on it. I'm worried about it, so I do plan on taking a couple of precautions to protect it. I'm glad yours is growing back.
Beautiful tour as always. I've been taking videos the last 2yrs to watch my progress & really helps. Wouldn't have thought about it if I hadn't started watching garden videos. I'm in Ontario, Canada zone 5
Thank you so much Jen, and I agree. I love to refer back to my old videos to check things out. Or even when I'm not sure if something should be blooming yet etc, I can refer back.
@@HookedandRooted it's fantastic to look back at later. I took out part of my large hosta, divided 3x and placed them in another area to make room for my new hibiscus 🌺 I'm no longer afraid to move or divide my plants.
They are so cute Mary! I hope I get to see them get to their full size. I have a few over there, I may transplant a couple to a drier spot to see if there's a chance of them returning next year. The bed they are in is a bit wet, and me so with all the rain we've been getting which could be stunting their growth a little. They are listed as perennial, but I'll have to wait and see.
Your garden and all of your blooms look so beautiful! I watch a lot of gardening channels on UA-cam and yours has become my favorite! You share such helpful information (like approaches for dealing with deer pressure) in your videos. Your style and attitude are inspiring. Can't wait for your next videos - hoping to see more of your dahlias. 🙂
I loved this video, Steph! With both of us living in similar zones and adjacent states, videos like this give me ideas of what's blooming this time of year and what might be good to plant in my own space for late summer / early fall color. 🌻♥
Love your garden! Here in Michigan I started from seed the fiery sunrise blend gomphrena. It is a mixed orange blend. Kind of hard to get it going, but well worth it and I will plant again. Started in milk cartons and direct seed.
That gomphrena sounds lovely!! So glad its going well for you. I agree its a great plant. I find it really likes the heat!! So it takes a little bit to get going from seed, but then takes off quickly.
Thanks so much friend!! Claudia your garden is gorgeous too. But I'm sure since you have a warmer climate things are starting to get tired. I'm guessing our bit of cooler nights lately and bit of rain have helped alot to preserve some blooms. The veggie garden on the other hand isn't looking so hot.
Oh my goodness! I love love those dwarf zinnias! They are show stoppers! Are they from seed? If so, where from? By the way- you have your own page in my garden notebook. Lol it’s called H & R - My faves! I identify so much with both your style and how you try to save money with gardening.
Beautiful tour of your garden gems 😊 If you want a great Anemone try Wild Swan and there are several others in the swan series. I'm in CT and my plants have been blooming since early June and they don't seed/spread. Highly recommend the Verbena as well, mine is in a container and its blooms are tiny but mighty and covered in 🐝s
That sounds wonderful Lynn!! I may pick one up. Thank you so much for your comment. I love verbena!! I have the bonareinsis growing this year. Polinators love it 💚
New subscriber, your garden is beautiful. I used the my Monet purple effects Weigela and serendipity alliums as a border around one of my garden beds. It looks absolutely beautiful together.
I’m so jealous that your Delphinium is doing so well. I see no evidence of mine. I’m hoping it dropped seeds and will grow back next spring. I’m in zone 8b, Foley, AL. Thank you for the tour, continuing to share the details on so many of your plants.
I'm very surprised its doing well also if I'm being honest. The bed they are in stays pretty moist, and delphinium I have known to like well draining drier soil. So its very interesting indeed. I do hope you find some seedings 🌱You are so welcome. Thank you for watching.
Hi Tonnie! Thank you so much!! I have tried ovevrwintering them before and they took a while to get going the following spring. I didn't get blooms until almost August vs buying new ones and having blooms in May. I might try again, but haven't decided yet. If I did, I would be sure to offer them lots of heat via a heat mat and very sunny window to break them out of dormancy a bit sooner and perhaps they would do better than they did for me last time I tried to overwinter them. Hope this helps.
Everything is so lovely! I am trying to figure out which hydrangea to put on the north side of my house. My brother was just telling me he has overwintered Mandevilla the last 2 years. The first year he kept a light on them, last year he just put the pot in the garage. It is huge & stunning. We're in 6a.
Stunning! Steph, Do you have a video on how to plant Zinnias? I know it is from seed, but how do you actually grow such beautiful flowers from just a seed?
Hi there! Thank you so much. I sure did, its so easy, anyone can do it. The zinnia seeds are small, so you just press them into the soil and barely cover them. Water them until they germinate, or if its been really dry/no rain. Otherwise they are pretty drought tolerant. I will show seeding annuals flowers next season.
Its a beauty! I love it so much. I can see it as I come down my driveway, and while I do dishes from my kitchen window and it makes me so happy! My quick fire is in afternoon sun for now, until that magnolia tree fills out more. It handles it beautifully!! I think they are rated to handle sun.
I always love when you do these garden bed tours! So inspiring to me. I’m curious what the fern-like plant is to the far right at 35:36 in the video. Is it a shrub? Evergreen? Thanks again. All is lovely!
Hi Kim, Thank you! It's a sem false spirea. It has the most beautiful spring color. I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/4nhG3KS25Qg/v-deo.htmlsi=Y2gqlTMTwJm9hRi4
I have a hedge of hinoki that have also been struggling with some dieback. I cannot tell if it gets too much water or not enough. We have a heavy clay soil that retains a ton of moisture. Any thoughts?
How many of those dwarf raspberry flowers did you plant in that one location? I’d love to do that next year in my beds, I love it! Your yard is just gorgeous.
Hi Sandra, Yes. I prune them each year in late winter, or very early Spring. My understanding is if you don't prune, you end up with lots of smaller blooms because those grow on those smaller thin branches. If you go in and clean up the shrub taking out any crossing branches, and any twiggy growth, and just leave a firm strong structure, they are better able to handle bigger blooms. Hope this makes sense. I have these video in which I show this: ua-cam.com/video/fMGkRZIPiLo/v-deo.htmlsi=bPPvNaniDFf4aaYm and: ua-cam.com/video/oIQRc2B2ec4/v-deo.htmlsi=Qhz_3kd867Fmd9SJ
Steph, what type of grass is that in your lawn near the Japanese maple garden? It’s interesting looking. I noticed in the frame where you showed your Lady’s Mantle.
Hi Steph! Looks great! What is the evergreen tree when you start to walk up your front walkway (you’re talking about gomphrena) looks like a hinoki, what variety is it?
Hi there, thank you so much! I have a large hinoki there behind the yellow mop cypress. I'm not sure on the variety of that hinoki as it was one of the first few shrubs/evergreens I purchased for my garden and hadn't kept the tag (been about 10 years). I do love it. Hinoki are beautiful 💚
Hi Lisa! Thank you so much! The Mandavilla I purchaed as plants and planted them here int his video: ua-cam.com/video/iihMvYbnU5I/v-deo.htmlsi=9QNo-vIyI8nI9Qu4
So pretty Steph absolutely love your gardens!!! I wondered if you could tell me what possibly could be going on with my Standard Quickfire, planted last summer and it produced lots if buds but the flower blooms are very sparse and some turning brown?
Hi Michelle! I find that my bobo's that were beautiful in July & half way through August, have started to brown. Last year I blamed it on the lack of water, and high heat we experienced. But this year fortunately we've had plenty of water, and now tons of humidity. So I want to say that the damp humid weather could be the culprit this year. Its a fine balance of when they will look and perform well. My quickfire is in a part shade spot (morning shade, afternoon sun), and is doing well. Regarding them being sparse, did you prune it? Sometimes if you don't prune you get lots of smaller blooms vs. when pruning you get larger blooms. The smaller thin/twig like branches can't support large blooms, so the blooms tend to be smaller. I would say to prune it late winter early spring, and fertilize it with something like Rose Tone, or Holly Tone, or Plant Tone, and see how it does next season. Hope this helps.
@HookedandRooted thank you I will definitely give that a try. I didn't prune it, it was just planted last summer. I also have a Limelight and little lime that were planted same time, didn't prune. Do you think I should in early Spring? I did a little on those but not much.
Bunnies in my area love to eat any type of hibiscus. Do you spray yours against bunny nibbles? I want one but may have to pot mine up. Lovely garden tour. Everything looks so beautiful.
Hi there, We also have lots of bunnies this year. They haven't bothered my hibiscus. Two things, I do spray Invisible fence deer and rabbit occasionally. Also, we have lots of clover around our lawn area that they tend to be satisified with, at least for now. Thank you so much!! 🌱
Oh your garden areas look so beautiful! In spite of the deer and bunnies! Did you grow the zahara zinnias from seed? Did you direct sow them? I love zinnias, and those are gorgeous.
Thank you so much Jennifer! I did start them from seed. Sometime in very early May If I recall correctly. Then I planted them out here @13:30 : ua-cam.com/video/kIW2rDQTpGI/v-deo.htmlsi=gOaDmrBmxXorhly0
Hi Monica! I did. I made a video of planting out my tubers around May. They are always late to get going since I pinch them. But they are starting to bloom well now and I will include them in a tour or video soon. Thank you!
I’ve been gardening for a long time but never grew a mandevilla , do you treat it as an annual? Are your white Luna hibiscuses a smaller kind or will they get as big as the perfect Sturm? Lovely tour , you got great variety going on in your gardens
Hi Amy! Yes, its an annual. However, some people have been successful with overwintering it. The one year I tried, it took a long time to get going again the following spring. My Luna hibiscus are a bit smaller than the proven winners variety. Thank you so much 💚
Hi there! I have a couple times, but it's been hard to keep up with spraying this year with all of the rain we've received. The rain is a blessing compared to the heat and drought from last year. I haven't sprayed recently, and so far, they haven't touched them. Fingers crossed that continues. The deer did reach over my vegetable garden fence though and ate some dahlias.
@@HookedandRooted thank you for the reply. I have tried different plants that have been tagged deer and bunny resistant but haven't worked. I will try a few zinnias next season.
Hi Marcy, While I do have irrigation, its off its not effective anymore since we have sprayers and now that our plants in our beds are all grown, it blocks the water. So drip would be better, but we haven't changed things over. Also, the lawn irrigation is off since we've been having regular rain and don't want to put pressure on our well. This year we've had lots of rain, where last year we had none and it was really hot. so very different this season than last. Containers get watered more regularly. The mandevilla I would do every 2 days or so if we didn't get rain. As for fertilizer, the only thing I've fertilized this year so far is the boston ferns and that was earlier on. I used Alaska fish emulsion fertilizer for that. I usually give everything some plant tone in the early spring.
Your garden looks absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much Ana 💚

A such a lovely garden. My august garden is on the end of its bloom cycle and not as much color.
They are so pretty Pat! A definite must grow again for me 💚
Beautiful tour of your garden gems 😊
If you want a great Anemone try Wild Swan and there are several others in the swan series.
Polinators love it 💚
Lovely garden. Thank you for the tour😊
You're welcome Nancy, Thank you so much!
New subscriber, your garden is beautiful. I used the my Monet purple effects Weigela and serendipity alliums as a border around one of my garden beds. It looks absolutely beautiful together.
Hi Gracie! Thank you so much for you kind words, and for subscribing! What a great combo you have there! Both plants are beautiful!!
Garden is beautiful as always - thanks for the tour! Are you planning to overwinter your mandevillas indoors for the winter?
Very helpful - thanks@@HookedandRooted!
Thanks for sharing, as I was considering how to do this in a zone 5b. I might try it and had just asked Steph about her plans to overwinter as well.
Exquisite!!!
This Hibiscus is just a dream! Would the Quick Fire hydrangea do well in full sun? Gorgeous garden!
I fell hard for that pink Hibiscus ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I always love when you do these garden bed tours! So inspiring to me. I’m curious what the fern-like plant is to the far right at 35:36 in the video. Is it a shrub? Evergreen?
Thanks again. All is lovely!
Hi Kim, Thank you! It's a sem false spirea. It has the most beautiful spring color. I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/4nhG3KS25Qg/v-deo.htmlsi=Y2gqlTMTwJm9hRi4
@@HookedandRooted thanks Steph! I’ll check that video out right now!
Muy hermoso
I have a hedge of hinoki that have also been struggling with some dieback. I cannot tell if it gets too much water or not enough. We have a heavy clay soil that retains a ton of moisture. Any thoughts?
How many of those dwarf raspberry flowers did you plant in that one location? I’d love to do that next year in my beds, I love it! Your yard is just gorgeous.
Hi Kelly, I planted at least a dozen or so. Thank you so much!!
Do you trim your little lime hydrangea? Mine are abut 3 years old also but their blooms are little, I have never trimmed them .
Hi there! It's a Japanese forest grass (Hakone) 'Aureola'
Love the dark stems on your Joe Pye Weed. Was wondering which variety it is.
Hi Peggy! It's called "Little Joe"
Thank you. It’s beautiful, @@HookedandRooted
Amazing video
Please share where you order your zinnia seed from
Hi There, I order from Baker Creek Seeds, Etsy, Swallowtail seeds, select seeds, from a bunch of places really.
@@HookedandRooted Thanks for the reply! I love Hinoki too 🌿❤️
Lovely garden! Definitely going to try the Mandavilla . Did you start from seed?
Did you grow dahlias again this year in your back garden?
Hi Monica!
Thank you so much 💚
Do you have to spray your zinnias for bunny and deer pressure?
May I ask did you direct sow your Zinnias or plant out seedlings?
Hi there, I planted out seedlings that I started from seed in the beginning of May. I planted them out toward the end of June.
@@HookedandRooted Thank you, that’s super helpful! I’m in love w your garden and your videos you inspire me! 🌺
How often do you water & fertilize pls
Congratulations for such Beautiful Plants, your touch and dedication shows it.
Is the hibiscus hardy to dinner 5? What is the name of that hibiscus?
Hi, I named the hibiscus in the video. It's called perfect storm by Proven winners.
@@HookedandRooted Oops, sorry I missed that. Is it hardy to zone 5?
What is the name of the Hibiscus
She said, the proven winners perfect storm (pink one), and Luna white in the front garden
@@Darceys_Flowers thank you
"Perfect Storm".
I have "Midnight Madness"
Both are large and beautiful
