In 1972 I worked with Jose. I was only 17. He was so gracious. He taught this teen guitar player wanna be to play Light My Fire his way. I am now 65 and I still perform it Jose's way. And proud to do so.
I saw Jose last night 2/25/23 and he is saintly man ..so humble and genuine. I was in awe of him and today it was raining so I spent a lot of the day listening to as much of his music and interviews as possible! He's a very wise person.
Such a lovable and kind man. I’m sure he is serious about things that matter but he is so humble and thoughtful. Love his national anthem version (best ever)
Jose' isn't interested in that kind of thing, but I'd like to see him get a lifetime Grammy award. But, He's interested in Music and Guitar (not just Flamenco) as he reveals here. I got to see him live in 1995 and he does sincerely and obviously enjoy performing an feeding off of the energy of the crowd.
When I was 16 I worked for KMart. On lunch breaks I would wander down to a music store that was close by. I saw a nylon string guitar that I wanted. Saved my money up and bought it. Jose Feliciano is the reason I wanted to play that kind of guitar. Jose was not only an inspiration to me but to others. He could really make any guitar sound fantastic. I learned finger style guitar playing because of Jose and a few others. I still have the guitar and actually play it more than the other 3 guitars I got. I just hope many others will listen to him and enjoy what he gives to us. Thanks Jose.
lonewave1 What a great story of how José inspired you in learning how to play a nylon guitar. Indeed, Jose makes the nylon guitar sound as if it was an extension of him. I too fell in love with the nylon guitar the same way you did. I do enjoy him playing Light my Fire. It never gets old my friend.
Love Jose's music! Such talent on the guitar, he often reminds me of Segvia and yet so versatile. I've only seen him perform live once, and it's a night I'll never forget. P.S. Jose, yes "We gots to find a solution."
I totally agree..he should be in the HOF..his timeline of music is fascinating.. very insightful interview and a great humanitarian..and he's right about accommodating for the blind.. in this day and age of resources and technology surely there's a way to make their world way better.
I have loved this man’s music for most of his career. My first album of his was “Fireworks” and I still love to listen to it to this day. There were so many beautiful songs on it. Jose’s instrumental version of “Yesterday“ was on that album, and I always thought it was the most beautiful version I had ever heard. Destiny, Once There Was a Love, Pegao...so many unforgettable songs. This video is hard to watch because of Jose’s obvious trouble breathing. It makes me tired just watching it. This was six years ago and he is now 74. I hope he is OK. Bless him.
Artiste attachant et pur musicien . Une voix , une guitare et ce feeling latino jazz qui transforme n'importe quelle ritournelle en pépite . Sa santé semble lui jouer un mauvais tour ..... Tiens bon JOSE . Tu es Formidable !
Jose had a great groove, it ways always the same. Tempo in bands and singers changes from time to time, Jose never teetered it was always the same bang like a clock his timing was incredible.
what an enlightening interview by the greatest guitarist of our time! it was also very enjoyable how he explained everything. to me the high point of the political parts of it was the phrase in the last song he played here: ''why do we have to pay for our health care?" Are you listening Obama???
Glenn Campbell was my idol as a kid. He got me interested in guitar. And then I moved onto John Denver. But if it wasn’t for Campbell I never would’ve taken up guitar. I only know three songs, but Glenn was my inspiration. I use to watch his show in the 60’s when I was a kid.
Chico and The Man song keeps Freddie Prince alive in a way because I think of him when I hear the song. Loved the show. Always sang along with the theme.
Everything said....., besides I thank Jose for giving me hope, me as a musician suffering from the same breathing (asthma) disease. Therfor no able to perform all songs, but lucky to do some of Joses (f.e. Rain).
I was born roughly 1 1/2 miles from downtown Chicago. My experience was 4 - 5 square block areas that were roughly 75% racially segregated yet my grammar school classmates were blended: ~35% white, Slavic (Ukrainians, Poles), 35% brown, Latino (Mexicans, Puerto Ricans), 15% black, and the remaining 5%, a mystery. There were 3 major gangs and I saw their symbols / graffiti mainly in the alleys when I walked from school. Most of the crime occurred at night and I witnessed ~10 bloody fights. But none of the fights involved guns or rifles - weapons of choice were: fists, feet, baseball bats, and readily available industrial, steel, chains. Regardless, here's 1 of the "Baddest browns", Puerto Ricans, I never met but wish I did: Enjoy this early Jose Feliciano "live" music video - I award him 10's for his raw musicality / passion, as for his guitar Skills, "Off da Chahhtts 11." www.youtube.com/watch…
If you listen to gifted musicians long enough, and how they collaborate together, you can hear the way out of our racial crap that has been building up for decades....music, and our shared love for it, is the way IMO.
I love Jose's music but he claims he was the first to play rock with a nylon string guitar; John Phillipis of the Mamas and the Papas record with nylon string guitar most of the time, and it was plugged in and it fit their genre . But Light My Fire by Jose has a very special place in my heart, I had been in Vietnam 8 months and Light My Fire came out; all of us guitar lovers relished his version, as much as the Doors original which we were listening to also. We were America's first rock n roll Army, and we could party.
He might be looking at Phillips as a folk player or pop player. Light My Fire is definitely Rock. Also all of his songs feature his virtuosity not so much John Phillips although I don't know what kind of player Phillips is.
Too bad he could not see what Michelle Phillips looked like. Jose is one of the people that got me to respect guitar more than piano, and made me want to play it or understand it more because I could hear the notes clearer. I was just blown away by his playing and also was amazed that he could turn me on to this style of music. I think I liked his version of 'Light my fire' before I got into the Doors version, but I did remember the original one because I remember hearing his chord changes and really digging it.
In 1972 I worked with Jose. I was only 17. He was so gracious. He taught this teen guitar player wanna be to play Light My Fire his way. I am now 65 and I still perform it Jose's way. And proud to do so.
Fantastic, A true genius and talent, Unfortunately so underrated by music magazines like Rollin Stone. The best guitar player in the world

Thank you so much Jose! I'm so grateful to you!

Such a lovable and kind man. I’m sure he is serious about things that matter but he is so humble and thoughtful. Love his national anthem version (best ever)
Love Jose Feliciano. One of America's treasures. I remember watching Chico and the Man and Jose's soundtrack fit perfectly.

Dope!
It's not all about sheet music. It's pure heart & soul performed by a gifted musician
It's incredible that he can learn to play Andre Segovia just by listening.
Breeze Incognito obviously!😂
He is a great musician and person! Love him!
Me too.
Mad guitar Skills, but your mention of "great person" is spot on Peter! Jose's picture should be in the Dictionary next to the word, Charisma~
Loved this interview. He brings out the humanity in me!
Love Jose's music! Such talent on the guitar, he often reminds me of Segvia and yet so versatile. I've only seen him perform live once, and it's a night I'll never forget. P.S. Jose, yes "We gots to find a solution."

Oh my heart is breaking, it looks as if he has emphysema or some breathing problem... NO... his voice is too great to lose
That was the first thing I noticed. I hope it's not too serious
Just getting old
He does suffer from asthma. He volunteered this during a live concert I attended. He was using an inhaler and made a joke about it.
wow, its frightening to hear his breathing. agreed but his speech timing is impeccable
Nothing but love & respect for him 😍

NEEDS TO BE IN ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME...
José’s last song is like a modern day protest song. Brilliant!
