  • USS CVN-78 Gerald R. Ford the American aircraft carrier, the lead ship of her class of United States Navy. This new generation ships will replace the old Nimitz class carriers as the flagships of the NAVY.
    The ship is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford, who served on the aircraft carrier during the World War II. USS Gerald R. Ford is the most complex and expensive ship ever built. In this video we will observe its advantages and features.

      I should think the remark of 780 ft. being huge was tongue-in-cheek. The Bonaventure was originally HMS Powerful, a Majestic Class carrier commissioned way back in 1945, sold to the Canadian navy in 1957and renamed HMCS Bonaventure. It was decommissioned in 1970. She was Canada's last aircraft carrier.

      @mwtrolle 5 років тому +20

      the are only 5 Ford's ordered, if you take away the one that you say replaced Enterprise thats 4 and there are 10 Nimitz-class in service. But beside the the Nimitz's served CVN-65 Enterprise, CV-67 John F. Kennedy, the Kitty Hawk's and even to some extend the Forrestal's. The US Carrier number are at an all time low, as a result of the end of the cold war, but as tensions are at a raise both with Russia and China, Im pretty sure no Nimits-class will be redrawn any time soon.

    • @Tinfoil_Hardhat
      @Tinfoil_Hardhat 5 років тому +11

      @@mwtrolle There are still more planned. They're not going to put all of them on order just yet. It's possible they might cancel further plans and develop another class, but it's unlikely for the US to keep more Nimitz class carriers in service past their 50 year lifespans. The navy simply cannot afford it.

      That's the flagship of a Fleet. Not of the entire Navy.
      For example: Bismarck was the Flagship of the Kriegsmarine as well as the Flagship of the Prinze Eugen-Bismarck Fleet.
      Being Flagship of the Navy means that if this ship joins any fleet it will take over as Flagship.

      @@thetrain47539 OK. The Ford is NOT the "flagship" of the US Navy. Indeed, though a carrier is the largest ship in a Carrier Strike Group (not a "fleet") the admiral normally resides on a cruiser, hence the cruiser is officially the flagship. A "fleet" in the US Navy tends to be an area of operation, not a group of ships.

      @@mwtrolle In the US Navy, only the Admiral ranks get their own "flag" - thus, flagship. Some navies have a rank between Captain and Rear Admiral called "Commodore" (USN used to have it but does not anymore.) This rank also gets a flag, and a ship in such a navy with a Commodore aboard can also be a flagship. In joint operations, a Commodore is held as equivalent to the USN Rear Admiral Lower Half (RDML O-7.)
      In addition, there is no flagship for the entire US Fleet. There are flagships for each of the Fleets of the Navy, as well as for Combined Task Forces. If there is an operation where there is more than one ship with an Admiral aboard, only one of the ships is flagship for that operation, and other ships with an Admiral aboard are not referred to as a flagship even though they will fly the appropriate flag for that Admiral.

    2.There is a sector where most defence channel lack is regular upload...obviously this kind of great content can not be made that frequently...but there is solution to this,you know in international community there is lack of Defence News Reports...jist like keemstar you can upload daily defence news or may be in two days...you can take example of DEFENCE SQUAD,they have over a million subs but only problem with them is there regional and hindi speakig(indian) chanel.You can take this idea to global level with english and news from all over the world like mew develpments,conflict ,new pacts related to milliyary.

    • @shadowOrgon
      @shadowOrgon 5 років тому +4

      obsolete also means less efficient, the Nimitz were designed for a nuclear exchange. the corridors from weapons lockers to aircraft were alot of weird twists and turns making moving bombs and missiles difficult, ford class is making that a lot easier for the crew. Also, Nimitz class barely as the electricity for the modern day electronics systems, Ford class as of today barely uses 30% of the electricity generated, they have a huge buffer for all the potential tech in the future.
      while yes Nimitz are still amazingly powerful ships still, they are showing their age and were only designed for 50years pushing them past that would start risking material issues and possible stress fractures. Then again the ford may have put in too many new shiny things..seeing as its still at Newport News ship building and from what I hear (I work on cvn 79), lots of issues still being addressed on it lol and then they're almost done with the JFK and thats gonna have its own issues lol

      Probably true in the near future, since even stealth aircraft are getting vulnerable to advanced AA defense systems, most notably S500s which its main purpose is defending against hypersonic cruise missiles, and even jamming aircraft. Even an F-117 Nighthawk was brought down by a cold war era ADS at the time when ECM systems are fairly advanced are difficult to penetrate. Plus there are hypersonic anti-ship missiles that even supercarriers may not always be immune to even with advanced early warning systems and a fully armed strike group. And who knows its the future we're talking about, it's not long before laser weapons will become too advanced that even orbital satellites will eventually be weaponized and used for orbital bombardments that can just easily split a supercarrier in half with a powerful sci-fi looking laser strike, but we got a treaty preventing that. For now.
      In addition, carriers and their air wing are mainly used in CAS ops, go in fast, drop some bombs, get out. They don't usually spearhead the battle nor do they take the front lines so air support or use of aircraft won't be that much obsolete even from 50 years from now since air superiority is most important and a major turning point of battles.

    Very impressive undertaking. The planning and effort it takes to make one of these ships is breathtaking for me. It's amazing what we humans can accomplish.
    But, I wonder if they are really worth the expense. A worthy adversary can overcome these ships by flying hundreds of drones against them in suicide missions , or just releasing many missiles at the same time, multiplying the number of targets.
    Having 0 carriers does not sound right. But, so many are really required? I think there is a lot of pork barrel politics going on here.

      Take a look at a carrier task force. Many ships out there that have only one function. Protect the aircraft carrier. What country has hundreds of drones or that many missiles that a task force could defend against?

      As long as he has "transferred the flag" a phrase meaning to transfer operational control, otherwise the command remains the original ship. It would be awkward in an emergency if in Señor Grande's citation the tuna boat automatically became the flagship. I don't think tuna boats are equipped with a CIC, except maybe a sonar to find tuna.

      The navy saw more action during the Syria conflict against ISIS than the Air Force did believe it or not. Via planes blasting off carriers in the Mediterranean versus the Air Force using air bases in Iraq and Kuwait. Always thought it was odd how quickly people forgot about ISIS and the absolutely disgusting shit they did. Probably hard for most people to recognize they share a species with them.
      In fact, the navy actually wracked up a kill with one of their super hornets against a mig over Syria as well if I remember right.
