Gary, not good to stack your firewood against a 4' fence. Dogs will eventually figure out that you put that there so that they can use it as a ladder 😂. Have a great day 😊.

Absolutely. My dog found out she could easily jump over the fence one winter when there was a snow bank up against it from plowing the driveway. Once she learned that trick she still climbed the fence even after I removed the snow 😅

Gary, those young trees are sumac. It is a type of bush poison. There are two types of sumac:
1.) One grows red 'cones' aside from the leaves. Most people don't get a skin reaction from this type.
2.) This 2nd type gets white flower cones. This one you may have to watch yourself around. You should wash the skin that comes in contact with this type. It affects the skin like poison ivy, or poison oak. Very itchy rash.😥
If you do get an itchy rash from either type of sumac poison, using isopropyl rubbing alcohol on it helps dry up the oils, but obviously stings. Benadryl can help block the itching.
Usually by Autumn you should be able to see (on older sumac trees) which type it is by the colour of the cones.

    • @xerxies2463
      @xerxies2463 11 місяців тому

The poison sumac grows mostly only in swamp/marsh. If it grows 3-4 inch red berry cones, it likely safe, (and even edible). If it grows clumps of little round berries, don't touch!

I like to tell everyone about jewelweed salve for poison ivy, burns, but I use it for everything. Mosquito bites are bad for me and this salve works great. Kills the itch. May work on sumac too. We have it here in Tennessee too.

The white ones can kill a dog and livestock if they chew on em. Also u can tell winter is around the corner is when the cones start to fall off and the leaves start to turn a bright red.

And, if I may add, DO NOT BURN the sumac. Or, in case some makes it into a fire by accident, stay well upwind of the fire and smoke, as the smoke can be taken into your lungs, and can be deadly. Any animal needs to be well-clear as well.

It looks great Gary. Coordinate with Anthony next time. The two of you together can knock all that weed eating out in no time and it's not all on just one of you. That's a lot of area you cleared. Be glad when you or Anthony or the four of you together get a tractor with attachments for the 41.36. You need it.

Like I told the other former desert dwellers CRC, that green stuff grows and needs to be maintained weekly to have control over it and eventually grow into grass. Double teaming it with CRC would keep it looking nice and not put so much work onto one family. It looks great Gary!

I had three large fig trees 🌳 along with sixty other fruit trees 🌳 on my former property. My pups really enjoyed laying under the fig trees 🌳 because the temperature underneath the figs trees 🌳 was a lot cooler than any of my other trees 🌳. Microclimate, almost a twenty degree difference.
Our fruit trees 🌳 provided fruit around ten months out of the year. We had early, mid, and late of the same type of fruit. It extended the season for that particular fruit, just a different variety. My kids loved ❤️ being able to go to the grove/orchard or the garden almost daily to get snacks. Something to consider as your homestead continues to flourish.
Blessings to you and your family. 🙏

I agree, I used a still fs80 scrub cutter with metal blades to clear scrubby areas near my house. That thing was reliable and efficient. I covered about 2 acres doing that. It reduces the fire fuel load and didn’t damage the friable soil in the process. I mulched the debris so wasted nothing. I got tired after a while. Eventually got an old tractor, built a slasher and it did the job much easier

    @DonleyCove 11 місяців тому

First off... You were one of the channels that inspired us to tackle @donleycove this year... (Which btw, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts, since it led to my wife's discovery of some bad stuff inside her that had to come out... long story for another time), but... we started off clearing the land with just a weed eater, and then went to the brush blade. But one of the items that was just awesome was the walk behind weed eater. It ate through some of that brush you were cutting with your weed eater with no problem. The only thing that was bad was when it hit saplings, it had issue and the line would break... would just follow up then with the brush blade and all nice and clean. So, long story short... look into a walk behind weed eater. Easier on the back... and again, thank you so much for your videos! Really, has affected our lives more than you would know from this post.

My dad had a Sickle Bar Mower one you walk behind not a tractor attachment that I used a few times and it really took down the tall stuff. Plus it was really quick. I preferred it to the lawn mower even though it didn't get as close to the ground as the lawn mower.

You have a lot of 'open ground' within your compound. Have you considered seeding parts with native wildflowers?
I am on only about 7 acres, but about 1.5 acres was previously in grass alone, at the access side of the property, which is where our home is. Doing our 'yard' usually takes about 1.5 to 2 days of collecting limbs and branches, mowing, edging and trimming, weeding, and extra time if I need to mulch, etc. So, I looking for an alternative. This has been a few years of consideration and research.
Finally, I came upon an article about modern 'meadows' buried down in info on 'cover crops', no-till farming, and returning tracts of land to natural progression, and cultivation of our micro-biomes around our homes, temperature mitigation, and water retention/conservation.
With developing 'wildflower meadows' in mind, I then found 'local'/regional experts (non-governmental) who work for preservation of native wildflowers, and found sources who sell these mixed seeds for meadows, or larger 'beds'. These mixes will provide 3-season color, are rarely mowed, and do not need to have a weed-eater used on them, other than perhaps to trim the borders periodically. If anything, a spring mowing (no scalping, but high cuts) leaving most clippings in place. Do not use these clippings for composting as the seeds will go along with the 'green', which you do want for composting.
These wildflowers are mostly perennials, so will keep coming back each year, as long as they have a friendly environment. You can find different types, such as for sun or shady areas, and I have even seen mixes for rocky soils. Unless you have drought, which will require some additional watering, the maintenance of these wildflower beds/meadows is minimal.
They are also great sources for cut flowers, growing and harvesting medicinal plants, and very nice sources of food for wildlife, including honey bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, other small birds, and larger mammals, from rabbits to deer, if the area is open [unfenced]. You can also scatter these seeds somewhat 'randomly' to give bright spots of color and 'beauty spots'. Some mixes recommend fall planting so the seeds have a freeze cycle to ensure better proliferation in the spring.
And, finally, you can cultivate the feed for your animals, as you noted in the case of pulling up certain plants to give to your chickens. But perhaps the best news is that you can add other species to your seed mixes, or scatter packets of other compatible flowers and plants to fit your own preferences, and you can even create 'hot spots' of specific colors, such as sowing red poppies in some given shape and size, as well as having reds in the general mix of the meadow area.
Sorry for so long a 'comment'.
May you all be well, happy, and at peace.

Gary, you need to invest in a walk-behind weed wacker. It will make your life so much easier and more time you can spend working on other things. You can also rotate your chickens around the yard so they eat all of the weeds. or get some goats and they will eat it too. The neighborhood I live in has a farm that is operated by an HOA and they move their goats around to eat all of the vegetation.

Time to invest in a riding mower for the big open areas. Since it’s the end of the season they should be on sale in your area so they don’t have to winter store them.

It's Wild August. Things are a jungle but in another month or so cool weather will weed eat for you. Next year do property clean in spring clean and stay on top of doing a bit of the worst each week. So it never gets that overgrown in August if you don't want the jungle for a month

I guess I didn't know ya'll had 6 doggies! Maybe it's already on the to-do list but I'd definitely find a designated spot for the dogs and fence in for them. It'll be hard to to get a nice green lawn with 6 doggies! Only my opinion guys not trying to be one of those people! Lol, it's your place and your dogs! Keep up the awesome work! 🇺🇲💯✌

Get you a torch like c’mon homestead uses to burn his siding an hit the weed and such in the rock areas where you don’t want things to grow. You just have to torch it till it kinda burns or wilts real hard and it will die off. Did this in areas where you couldn’t use weed eater or weed killer. It works well and only needs to be done every so often.

Hey Mr. Gardner Gary... when you need to identify something, specially plants, do you know that your "Google View" on
your phone can identify it? Yeah it's on the search box on your phones home screen. just touch the little camera icon
and point the phone at whatever your trying to identify and a moment later it will show you a picture of the plant or thing
you need info about. It will give you the common name as well as the botanical name. I've used it many times when I
don't know the name of a plant. I give my sister-in-law credit for showing me how to use it and now I can share this with
you in finding out the name of the plant you cut down in this video. Make sure when you do use the app that you get a
clear crisp view of the plants leaves and or flower to help identify the particular plant. It also works wonderful on many
house plants. Enjoy..... gardnerwilson Me southern AZ.

Don’t use a weedwacker go out and buy an Allan Scythe which may go by a different name in the USA but it’s an engine that drive two 14” wheels and like a hedge trimmer one steroids the blade has about 4” between the teeth and has about a 2” cutting bite the comb of the blade is about 4” long prongs and the blade cuts a 36” wide path. These are made for cutting what you have being weed whacking but a lot faster it will cut it at a walking pace with no effort and it lays down as soon as it is cut so it’s easy to collect or leave but if it’s tall grass you’re cutting you could collect once dry as hay for your animals. The only thing is as you may have gathered they are dangerous and will cut a hand off as quick as you can blink as no kids around when using it please.😊😊

Yardwork. It's one of those jobs that has to be done and when you finally get it done you can look around and see how nice everything looks. Maybe someday once you get your cabin and garage done you can get some equipment to help you make things a lot easier for you and it won't require an all day chore to get it done. Have a great day. I enjoyed your video and smashed that thumbs up button.

I have a question for you Gary. Instead of weeding the weeds. Can you just try to tear them out of the ground so they can't regrow again. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️
