      Yes I first started using that method when making hedges from foam rubber.......it makes life a bit easier.

    I suggest to try using polystyrene: get a nice piece big enough for two wagons, take your wagon, press it on the polystyrene and with a pencil draw the shape of it on the polystyrene. Then cut it, but cut the inside of the rectangle which is the part that will go inside. Once you've cut it, decide the height of that piece.
    Now you have a small rectangle which we put the gravel in it: i used the same ballasting technique because it make the gravel (if black) look more similar to coal, shiny and darker than the actual gravel. now we can put it in the wagon and get it out.
    You can also use magnets inside the polystyrene, but that's something i never tried.

    use coffee grinds to imitate lignite or brown coal

    Nice job ! Was that real coal you used or imitation stuff?
    You can also use folded cardboard for flatter loads. Or matchsticks or trimmed balsa for timber loads.

      Good question Ray........I`ve lost the label so I`m not absolutely sure......best guess would be imitation.
