AMD today announced its new Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU, following-up the prior 5800X3D and 5600X3D on the AM4 platform. They also announced the 5600GT and 5500GT for AM4, plus a slew of new desktop APUs for AM5. Those include the 8600G, 8700G, 8500G, and 8300G. AMD also spent some time discussing its improved NPU on the mobile 8040 CPUs.
Note: AMD has sent a media notice out indicating two errors AMD made in its graphics. AMD did not catch its errors until about 10 hours after the company lifted the news embargo. AMD indicated that its errors were: The 8000G APUs stop at PCIe Gen4 support, not PCIe Gen5 and the 5500GT is 6C/12T, not 4C/8T. You can learn more here: • HW News - New AMD RX 7... @gamersnexus Do you think that AMD releasing a 5700X3D is just another way to stick it to intel? I.e why would you upgrade to intel if you are a consumer that just wants a bit of a cpu boost? With prices being what they are I can see the Asia market jump on CPUs like these. Make it an APU that won't suck and you'd get a good number of consumers buying them. Also it's a good way to get rid of subpar silicon to am4.

Instead of making fun of how long AMD IS STILL SUPPORTING AM4 with new products, understand for 90% of people its more than acceptable performance for in many cases HALF THE PRICE of Intel and AM5 when looking at the cost of new MB's. And the MB manufacturers LOVE AM4 not dislike it. It's more profitable to have long runs on assembly lines than retrain/retool. Do you honestly think most people that are going to upgrade are buying these products? It's mostly new systems. For most people, 5000 series games very well and you can spend an extra $100 on a better processor/gpu.

Hey, please check exactly if the 5600GT supports PBO2 and if it can boost to 4800 all cores, which would make it even bester school/office, "home class" APU! xD Imo it's just a 5600G with +200 Mhz PBO2 and -15 CO and +200mhz "OC" on the igpu out of the box, which "everyone" does anyway LOLOLOL GG AMD

I kinda hope they would do a end of the line CPU in 2-3 years time. The last AM4 mobos are around 1-2 years old. So a final upgrade would probably get the motherboards down to their last usefull life. Reducing E-waste. I really hope amd does the same to AM5 when it is close to the end.

AM4 has been one of the most interesting platforms in a long time. Hopefully this gives us a look at what they’ll do with AM5 and up too. I bought my B450 PCB in late October 2019 based on the promise that it would support all future AM4 chips. Needless to say I am satisfied that AMD have fulfilled that assurance, in fact I'd say they've more than fulfilled it beyond what I expected. Coming from an Intel platform (z70) that was dead and had no upgrades after a couple of years this really impresses me. 4 and a bit years with still plenty of gaming upgrades plus when the platform truly dies the capacity to pick up a (then) cheap fast 12 or 16 core chip to repurpose the board into a budget workstation makes it an absolute bargain for the hundred Quid it cost me new.

I got so much use out of that machine before upgrading to AM5 late last year with a B650 and a 3080. The platform being supported for so long is what made me go with AM5 over a 13 series Intel chip. Both are great choices, but that support appealed to me.

I'm currently using an R5 5500 (I started with an R7 1700 I picked up for £80 in 2019) and a 2060S, basically the same as your old 3600 build. It's still all I need ATM. I'll upgrade the system in a year or two but I'm in no hurry, I play at 1080P so as long as I can get 60FPS I'm fine because I play single player games. I'm erring toward AM5 but I'm not a brand person so I'll see how evolution goes, I think the AM4 longevity is probably a lightning in a bottle moment that will probably never be seen again. Still, if AMD give AM3 3 gens again then who knows, this might be a new normal. BTW, my B450 is also MSi, it's a Tomahawk Max board, very good build quality IMO.

For those that wonder why AM4 is going to be alive for at least another year, possibly 2? Server contracts. According to Moore's Law AMD signed server contracts supporting EPYC server chips which have Zen 3 CPUs so since they are going to have to continue making Zen 3 until the contracts expire they might as well take those that don't hit the speeds required for the EPYC chips and sell them as AM4. I'd say that's a smart move, keeps from trashing silicon while making AM4 a budget builder heaven.

Such behavior is one of the reasons I am a fan and have been for nearly 30 years now 😬👴
Their work on APUs has been super fascinating to me over the years and I have tried to support such efforts when I can since they started in hopes they would keep it up, and they did! I got their unlocked A10-7850 Black Edition APU chip shortly after it came out and still have it. Ran hot, but is really cool! Especially with a mobo that has on board AMD video with "hybrid crossfire"... and some patience....and a water cooler lol.
Anyway, I'm glad they kept at even though they caught a lot of crap for trying to push them toward gaming at first. I personally believe they will be responsible for getting a capable PC down to the price that MS and Sony Consoles can not compete with(especially with the upgrade paths available from that initial price considered)and finally set us free!!!!!! No more developing for lower fixed specs(XB, PS) then porting "up" to PC for 10 years before any significant improvement can be made. Think about how long "AAA" game developers had to consider if their new engine/game could run on an Xbox360 or a PS4 without looking/playing "unacceptably" different.
For a nice little while it used to be(arguably 2000-2008±) that a high end game was usually developed for PC then ported down to a console if possible. Often, it would end up being so different they had to change the name. Like the FarCry games on Xbox and wii, etc. Or Battlefield 2 which was trimmed down to be BF2: Bad Company even though BF2 could play great on an 8XAGP GPU, and both XB360 and PS3 had PCIE. It wasnt the graphics capabilities holding it back. It was the comoute power. Consoles have to push nearly everything their hardware has to visuals leaving little for anything else. Otherwise, it would cost too much. That really hasnt changed, so as long as that is the case, much of our PC potential is being left on the table. And developers can not take advantage of it if they are forced to sell on consoles in order to get the funding to make the game and the licenses come with strings like not looking/playing too different from the PC version to maintain the illusion that there is parity at all.

Only worth it if both CCDs have the 3D cache, if AMD did that it would be a insanely good CPU. I hope they do it!

Been at this hobby for almost 30 years and I've never seen anything as long-lived as AM4, but keeping ageing platforms alive and useful is textbook AMD, going at least as far back as their 40mhz 386DX (where Intel stopped at 33mhz).

8000g is gonna be great for diy servers for home use, especially when they start coming down in price a bit.
ECC Ram for stability and some decent transcoding performance in one power optimized package that due to it being closely related to their laptop apu, (probably) doesn't just burn 30 watts sitting at idle.
Even at launch prize I would probably go for it, if I was in need of a new server.
The thought that you could use one apu pc as a casual living room gaming machine that doubles as a plex server ect.
And could even do a decent job as a cloud gaming host... that's nuts. I love it.

I MEAN, I've been rocking AM4 since 2nd gen and it's still going strong with a 5900X and 32 GB DDR4 3200. I'm only just now starting to feel like a platform upgrade because of the lack of nVME slots on my motherboard. Makes me pretty happy that one platform has lasted as long as this one has.

    • @cristod1904
      @cristod1904 6 місяців тому +1

Well for that extra NVME slots you can get a PCIE adapter for like $10 or so, just read your motherboard manual 1st, some boards may share lanes so when a certain slot is used there's another slot that will be turned off or run slower

When you eventually review the 5700x3d can you also include a tiny comparison between the 5700x and the 5700 non-3d, since the 5700 is technically a lower cache model (different die altogether) it would be cool to see how much more gaming you can get from 5700 > 5700x > 5700x3d.

Technically speaking, AM2 had a lot of support too, depending on the motherboard. Mine can run literally everything from AM2 to AM3. AM2 came out in 2006, and the last CPU for AM3 came out in December 2010. 4 years is not 8 years, but it's still not that bad. And it definitely keeps my AM2 platform going, even if I don't actually use it for day-to-day tasks.

I have Gigabyte B550 Vision D motherboard with thunderbolt 3 ports, 5700 G, 64 gig of ram , and a intel arc 750. I added a USB3.2 2x2 C card as well. Not a gamer, but have been very happy with the system. The board has basically disappeared everywhere. I've been sitting on a asrock B650E riptide board for the last year and a half, may build a system on that after prices shake down. Glad the AM4 platform is getting processor upgrades!

  • @iurigrang

What you touched on other markets for the 5700x3D and AM4 is super important. I see reviewers talk about platform longevity for the longest time, but I largely ignored it because, on my market segment, no one updates often enough you’d have 2 CPUs within the same platform life cycle. AM4 is really the first one that I’ve see that made me go, “uh, had I bought a first gen ryzen, I see myself upgrading to a 5th gen one and saving myself a motherboard swap”.
I hope they keep up with this. This is cool and all, but being the first time it lasted this long, buying a more expensive motherboard for ryzen 1 on the hopes that this might happen would have been silly for cost control. But if this becomes a trend within AMD, buying a motherboard that WILL be supported for sure when new processors come out, even if that comes at a premium, will be very reasonable for us more cost aware.

So the stuff that got talked about here, was the low end, the mobile, the current gen and the last-gen with AI tacked on...
I was hoping to get some insight into the Zen 5 R9 ~ 16 core. I'm guessing that's going to be called the R9 8950X, but they haven't announced it yet.
AM4 is still alive and still getting new parts released for it, and I think that's good. I am not a potential customer for it, (I don't already have an AM4 platform) but I'm glad they're doing it.
The wildly enthusiastic take-up of AI for everything ... [sigh] I learned computers in the mid '90s, and we had buzz-words, and we had wild enthusiasm to use existing synergies to fully web enable significant success factors in order to leverage existing synergies to move EVERYTHING onto the cloud, because ... buzzwords! Hype is a buzz-word.
All of that guff from the PR focussed mission statement, it had meaning and it was right and we did move that way, but the hype was over the top and wildly misleading, and a lot of the people who leaned the hardest on it, didn't have any idea what they were talking about. It was mostly just PR type blood in the water.
I was doing a diploma course, in 1995, and while the pass mark was low for most things, you couldn't fail a module and still get your diploma. The two modules I had trouble with, one was programmable logic controllers, and the use of ladder diagram logic. The other, was Business Communication. Now what that meant, was basically how to inject a few sentences of buzz-words into everything. Think Lisa Su talks to investors, think these kinds of presentations ... I had a huge problem with saying something misleading that investors and accountants might like, which I viewed as lying. And I had a problem with assembling a hundred word sentence that didn't really say anything but sounded impressive and was heavy in buzz-words.
I bring this up because that's exactly where we are with sticking AI into everything.
AI is a remarkable and rapidly developing technology, but it's not the answer to all problems, and I don't need it to run my Linux desktop or surf the web ~ any more than I need a Trusted Computing Module. I'm not saying it should go away, I'm saying despite what we're being force-fed, it's not the answer to all problems, and I don't need it to run a Linux desktop.
You don't need a microprocessor to make an egg-timer, and you don't meed AI to run a desktop, or a simple text-editor.

Actually, now that Steve mentions this, seems like motherboard vendors are, or better said, have been missing opportunities to relaunch or launch new AM4 motherboards for these price-sensitive, late-comer CPU options. The used am4 market has been high for a big while now and they could capture that market back. Of course if they have transitooned some of their production hardware to only be compatible with newer stuff, it's hard. It may also be due to a lack of parts by supply chain (including AMD/TSMC themselves for Chipsets...)

The new 5700x3d is going to be close to the low price of the 5800x3d which is kinda a kick in the pants. I think they jacked stuff up to make room.

I`m really curious to see how the 8700G specifically performs compared to a low end dGPU considering GPU prices in my area are still pretty high (not to mention power usage of even a lower end dGPU vs an APU), but based on the claimed framerate on Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p low, I don`t think they`re quite where I`d want them to be based on my hopes of essentially making a gaming oriented pc with comperable size, cost, power usage and 1080p gaming performance in modern titles as the XBOX series X and PS5. I also wonder how the 8700G and it`s 780m performs compared to the Z1 extreme, since the GPU is the same, though I presume the desktop version of the GPU would perform significantly better due to higher power budget and better cooling, though if the improvement isn`t significant I`ll stick to my Ally and Acer laptop with a 10300h and 1650 ti mobile
