Canada has an average GDP per capita that is on par with Mississippi's GDP per capita, so taking in all of Canada would actually drag down the United States economically. Not to mention we'd be taking on a welfare state where 23% of the workforce works in the public sector (compared to 14% in the US). Sorry Gweilo, USA has it's problems, but at this point it's Canada that's heading for complete blowup with it's ridiculous cost of living, awful health care (I know people that can't find a family doctor for years), insanely high levels of immigration from one country, weakening currency, high taxes, and almost no real economic growth.
Generally speaking, Tariffs are a negative, but in the near term, Trump will add to the Biden tariffs to 1) Protect American industries shielding them from foreign competition 2) to increase federal revenue and 3) encourage domestic manufacturing growth. Fixing America's problems is going to take drastic measures and if skillfully administered, they can address America's underlying shortcomings. Many real experts suggest a major recession might be a good prescription for an economic reset (think Herbert Hoover).
