I love Michael's version of Gethsemane. It's powerful and passionate without being an over-the-top screech fest. He's been singing the song for years and sometimes his performance is smooth and polished like this one and sometimes it's much more emotional and theatrical. Whatever he does with it, it's always a stellar performance.
Unlike when Michael was in Les Mis, the other singers here are good but not great. He stands out. Just a phenomenal singer and performer! Also shout out to the genius's who wrote the songs and lyrics.

Steven Ritter More than 20 years ago I happen to see an ad in the Dallas morning news where Jesus Christ superstar was going to be performed and Ted Neely was reprising his role as Jesus. I didn’t care how much it cost, what day of the week it was on, I was going to be there. The original movie with Ted Neely as Jesus is one of my absolute favorite movies. I think because I saw it as a young child, it spurred in me a love of musical theater from then on. But seeing Ted Neely play Jesus live is one of the highlights of my life.

They stopped in Dallas from 26 April to 1 May 1994. Now I can say I have seen the ultimate Jesus and Judas perform live and on state in JCS. I just remember seeing that Ted Neely was in the cast, I may not have even realized that Carl was on tour as well. I am sure I still have my Playbill from the show. I never get rid of those...I have BOXES of them. JCS was coming back to Dallas this year and I was looking forward to it so much since it is one of my favorites but alas COVID squashed my happiness. I think they are rescheduling it but it was one of the shows I really looking forward to. At least we got to see Dear Evan Hansen before COVID hit...

Yeah, that grouping of actors made me a bit uncomfortable too. I'm hoping they were just pulled from different casts for the concert. As much as I love Michael Ball, my favorite Jesus/Judas pairing is from the series of made-for-tv musicals that ABC did a few years ago.
This dude sounds like he is singing the song and not embodying the character of Christ in his last moments of doubt. In fact, everyone he sounds like they are just singing it to get the words out but no one means them. I didn't buy that Judas was worried for his friend, I didn't buy that Mary Magdalene loved Jesus, I didn't buy that the apostles were happy. Not every singer needs to be Ian or Ted or Camilo but at least make me believe you were someone special. I guess also the arrangement doesn't help? Sounds like the ROCK was sucked out of it and replaced with an overly theatrical version. Almost like the original film tried to do but they kinda screwed up that job as well. Anyway, always fun to hear these tunes sang from different artists but this specific group did not much move me.
Agreed. Not an ounce of emotion from any of them. My only commendation would go to the guy playing Judas at the beginning. Michael Ball is great in parts that suit him, but he was lacklustre at best in this.
I listened to the entire thing and to be honest in my opinion this really wasn't that good because usually when you hear a song being sung the instruments usually go with the voice in this case they didn't seem to also I was waiting for Michael Ball to sing Gethsemane which I have always enjoyed.. but if you hear previous versions of him singing this you'll see that some of the words were different... In my opinion the best version of the song that he has done was in the Andrew Lloyd Webber birthday celebration in 1996 I think it was
