@@rlgonzalez1458 I think that's unfair. Landon absolutely did the best but I don't think he murdered either Dollya or Priscilla that all did great in the season. Dollya in particular imo did amazing, she just came off very unlikable for some reason.
I think the best part about Landon in that season was that beyond the challenge performance he was also just above the drama (and that season had DRAMA). Everyone else had moments of weakness. He had like one low placement and I cannot even understand why (imo he was at worst safe, I'd have him high over Louisianna)

This is one of those situations where Maddy being straight in a queer community is an asset. He’s able to take an objective step back and let someone deep in the community be like “um, the gay dudes need to chill out”. I hope Cider is the first of MANY drag kings that will be on the show (maybe even increase their visibility so they’re on drag race?)

As a Cis-Het white male with "feminine" tendencies, the space Maddy has created since her glow-up has allowed me to also shed a lot perceptions about myself and others. I've always assumed that because I'm straight I need to hide from other people how much I love the FREEDOM of Queer Art, and refrain from attending my local city's events (WE HAVE SO MANY). And on the other side, always felt like I'd be "invading" someone else's space if I tried.
I'm so unfamiliar with Drag Kings, and I love this conversation. So productive. Will definitely be paying more attention to Landon and their projects, and Kings in general.
Edit: for clarity I just meant "Attending" as in, "Paying for a ticket and fanning 1's at those bitches like no tomorrow" not that I was going to try performing, I CAN'T DO MAKE-UP, AND I LACK FEROCITY, not honesty!

When people talk about the theatre of gender and social norms it all makes sense when I watch Madeline, myself, a lot of other gender non-conforming people, everyone that can't fit what feels like strict expectations, and the people who look like they are but they are exhausted by keeping it up.
Honestly I just want to live. I don't want to have to meet people's (including sometimes my own) expectations of gender.
Flowers just bloom without thinking about what they look like and how that compares to all other flowers and everything else. They just live and die in beauty and dignity.

If Landon was on flagship drag race he would smoke said hypothetical season with suuuch ease, like Sasha Colby levels of slayage; Both situations TO ME where theyre the clear winner and the season loses steam bc of it no matter how hard production tries to feed us Anetra (or Landon’s hypothetical counterpart). Especially taking into account his Dragula win we need him fast tracked to all stars/all winners/whatever if it were to happen, and even then he’s dominating easily in my head. Drag race missed their opportunity and if they didn’t we would be EXCEEDINGLY lucky for him to deign to give them the time of day, just like we were when Sasha was oh so gracious as to let them give her 200k and fix their reputation in doing so.

I hope a drag king gets on soon and often and not just one per season. I don't care if they're "not ready" because we've had plenty of queens who weren't ready, who could do makeup but couldn't perform, who could perform but couldn't do sew, who could dance and sew but found acting challenges difficult. we have a really strong king scene in my town, and no lie, the king shows are my absolute favourite. VERY rarely will you ever see a drag king get up and do a straight lip sync in a boring outfit, because AFAB performers just can't "get away with it" doing a low effort show, so there's always a fun twist, or an extra campy costume, or another talent, or some kind of over the top add on that just makes our king shows extra queer, extra fabulous, extra EXTRA. also, because they're generally run by AFAB folk, the respect and diversity, and safety tends to be incredibly good, because it has to be to keep the mostly afab performers and audiences safe. it's FANTASTIC. don't get me wrong, our queens are wonderful and inclusive too, but the kings and the shows they run just hit different. i've never felt safer in a club than at a show run by a drag king.

@@feltfrog it IS fun. we're lucky enough to have some feminist badasses who really just put the work in, and started running their own shows and strongly encouraging other kings to perform, creating opportunities for kings to perform, just... making space where there hadn't been any before. but its been fantastic for the drag scene in general, more talent, more variety, more queer people making queer art... we're honestly so lucky! i think the thing a lot of dragrace show runners and drag queens forget is that a HUGE proportion of the fanbase is afab. and we COME OUT for our kings. we spend money. we go to the shows. we buy the merch, and the make up lines. we scream and yell and sing along and CELEBRATE our hyper queens and drag kings and gnc performers. they're really missing out by not allowing more afab representation on the show, it would make them SO MUCH MONEY.

As a 52 year old queer latino who grew up in SoCal (53 in August), I can relate to Landon Cider on so many levels. I was also a theater major in college, and I performed in a few Sondheim musicals, but Into The Woods was my favorite (I was the Head Tree in the Tree Ensemble, the titular 'Woods')! Amazing interview, thank you! ❤❤

I love this introduction to Landon, I think Maddy facilitated such important questions about drag kings, and the lack of representation there is in the RuPa sphere. Being in Europe, I can't access Dragula, I'm not part of the community, I'm an ally. RuPaul's drag race was my first foray into the artistry, and I'm feeling bad that I didn't delve deeper than what drag race showed me. Landon has gained a fan in me, so articulate, has really given me a new perspective on drag, and on gender performance.

So true about the critiquing of masculinity being such a hold back. Even Maddy discussing their discomfort as being a male drag king for this one video. I hope I get to meet Landon one day and pick their brain too. Not only on political stuff but also about performing. Seeing her win Dragula made me so happy!

I really can't express how lovely this interview was to listen to; one of my favorites thus far. I already loved Landon Cider's work but it was truly amazing to hear their life story and experiences. I'm just in awe and also very touched at how both vulnerable and powerful they are in their energy, even in expressing such heavy moments of trauma. Saying this as a stage 4 late 20 something queer "survivor" of cancer (who also has shitty memory, go figure). Like they said, our medical situations are an ongoing journey and largely uncertain but "for now it's okay". Such a special human and artist, just wow. Thank you both.

I am so happy about this conversation on misogyny and patriarchy in (aspects of) drag race. at the end, despite its important and impactful discourse, its another example of an industry dominated by (mostly) men. even dominating conversations on feminity. and it gets my guts if men who celeberate their "feminity" on stage talk down about female bodies. nope, does not cut it.

After Michelle Visage said she wants a Drag King on Drag Race last year, I think it is only a matter of time. I think we will see one outside the main franchise first though. Probably in UK though I think France found a spot to feature Drag Kings on both seasons so it could be there first.

    • @jmann6130

I think it depends on wether or not Rue wants to diversify the franchise more so far they have only had Victoria scone and Pandora Nox as the only AFABs to date. And also I’m not sure if Rue and Michelle would know how to critique a king’s drag since they put so much emphasis on femininity on the show so I don’t know if it would be in there wheelhouse.
