This is great! One problem I have though is that I have assigned colors to different pads on each drum rack for visual feedback and those colors don't update to the newly selected drum rack's layout when switching. Is this normal? An issue? A known one? It seems like the colors of the pads(and how many are lit up from the number of samples in a drum rack) should change with the selection of a different chain. The dummy clips is a great way to clean up the set and switch drum racks while also changing things like tempo, but it does make it difficult to play one drum rack when the visual feedback is from a different drum rack in the same instrument rack.
Hey Tobias, very helpful information, but I gotta question for you. I'm trying to find out how to load multiple preset drum racks by the 4x4 square, stacked up in 4 areas of the Launchpad to play all at the same time. The Launchpad manual makes reference to this ability, but I can't find out how to do it. It says there are four quadrants that can have four kits, I would like to pass different kits into those four quadrants as I play them live. Not recording or sampling. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Hi, If I understand correctly you want to have 4 sets of 4x4 drums on your launchpad, right? This is super easy. All the buttons on the launchpad relate to a different note in the drum rack. When you press a button you can actually see the corresponding note in the drum rack lighting up. Just move the sounds to those 4x4 sections in the drum rack. (You can scroll through the grid on the left of the drum rack). If you want to keep them all completely separate, you could use an instrument rack with 4 different drum racks in it. Did this help or did I misunderstand the issue? Cheers, Tobias
@@tobiasmiorin Thank you for responding. I'm with you about the corresponding buttons working with the drum rack. The problem is getting the drum racks into the grid on the left of the drum rack. I don't want individually program each note, I'm trying to drag and drop kits into that grid in the positions 1 thru 4. But what I get is the individual notes turning into 'multi' notes on the drum rack, because i assume the two kits overlap in the 1st 4x4 position of the grid. I would like to be able to shuffle in and out entire kits into that grid with it's presets, with intentions of improving sounds live. This is referenced in the launchpad x manual under the 'note mode' 'drum mode' section, but I haven't been successful at doing it yet. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.
@@tobiasmiorin Yeah,, finding other people say it can't be done, which seems odd to me. forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?t=211285 Programming one sound at a time when they have whole racks ready seems like I'm missing something. I wanna stack up that grid with preset drum racks. Do you know if it's possible, or do I have to go one cell at a time?
@@trippinwhilestrippin Can't really think of a way of doing this other than manually I'm afraid. Just never come about that problem as I never use the preset drum kits. Personally more a fan of mix'n'match or creating new sounds with Multi samples. Sorry I can't help
If you don't mind I just wanted this one to be clarified. Actually I have two midi track one with sd3 vst and another one with multiple drum rack in an instrument rack. In the 1st instrument drum rack.. Notes C#1 & D1 has chimes samples and C2 has a Tamb Loop. And in the 2nd midi track, I am using the SD3 instrument rack, where I have created multiple instances of the SD3 instrument to omit C#1, D1 & C2 for samples and loops to be triggered in the 1st Drum rack. Rest all the other midi notes will be triggered by the sd3. My question is, is this the way to do it or some other method to achieve what i wanted? Because the way I did will create multiple instances of sd3 vst (i.e 3 in my case) and this affects my cpu usage. and moreover this is for one song. Some other songs have samples and loops placed in different notes in drum rack. Earlier I used the mainstage for this where I can assign the drum pad to trigger which vst midi note needs to be played and it was working fine. But mainstage is not stable with loops. I am getting a slight delay with the playback plugin while triggering the loops. Please help me with this. Thanks.
Very clear, thanks. I made a very simple midi controller with six buttons using the Makey Makey. I've put a drum loop on one button (the other five have other samples). And I'm trying to make this same button trigger a second sound on a different track, and if possible stopping the previous drum loop. Do you think this could be done? Is it possible to use the choke between tracks to do that?
Hi. That won't be too straight forward. Basically you need some form of 'changing' that incoming MIDI note for the second sound. Best do looking into Max For Live devices. If you know the order of which you want this to happen a Live Stepper would do the trick - or use of the IAC driver by basically just triggering a line of dummy clips. If you want to be able to change it randomly it's harder. Maybe consider a dummy clip with automation to 'select' the correct sample for you? Choke groups only work within the same drum rack, so your samples would have to come from the same channel. However, you could just use that as a source and output them into separate audio channels to have more control of the mix. Hope this helps a little? All the best
This video blew my mind. I knew a few contemporaries of mine (realtime, live pad playing or finger drummers) were using Ableton and swore by drum racks, but I had no idea it was this easy to achieve what would be my full set, basic template. The requirement for me is to be able to create a set that I can play in realtime, continuously. Here is a short version of what I mean - it has 4 songs that I play without stop: ua-cam.com/video/YYzB0kHWeKA/v-deo.html I have been able to do this in Reason with a few different setups, but it is not nearly as easy at it apparently is in Ableton. Doing what you have done here in Ableton would have saved me hours and hours and hours of setup and configuration time. I really don't know if it is even possible to do anything approach this in anything other than Ableton and Reason. Overall stability is critical for live stuff. In the past when I tried Ableton it would crash here and there. Reason almost never crashes. In fact I can count on 1 hand how many times Reason has crashed on me in 10 years. Hopefully Ableton is stable enough for this not to be a big issues because I'd love to be able to start working with the multiple drum rack setup. Thanks so much for this video!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad this helped you! Yes, Ableton is absolutely the way to go for what you're trying to achieve. You can also of course chuck separate effects on every single sample within the drum rack and control groups of effects via the macros. Endless possibilities. A similar principle is used for the effect racks by the way. Could also be interesting for you! All the best and have fun experimenting! Tobias
