    Hey friends! Today I'm going to be demystifying racks in Ableton Live. They are one of the absolute best things about Live, but really they can be super confusing beasts.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Рік тому

      No worries, thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed! :D
      Yep, racks work with 3rd-party plugins, the only thing is that you can't map a parameter to a macro if it's not an automatable parameter in the plugin. Some plugins don't let you automate certain parameters, and those parameters can't be mapped, other than that they work entirely the same as Ableton Live native devices. :)

Q.Q.Q: Are the Chain zones just an arbitrary "setting" value that can be controlled bYour explanations and demonstrations are perfect....binge worthy for sure. Thank you! y macros and devices? Glad you like the video!!
      Yes the chain zone is mostly an arbitrary value to be controlled with macros. Although it doesn't directly allow for keyswitching, you could use the expression control max for live device to have incoming MIDI notes control the chain selector!

  • @RandomVelocity

    Very well explained except how do you save a rack after you’ve built it to use in other projects?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  8 місяців тому +1

      That's a great question! There are two ways: 1. there is a little save icon in the top right of the rack that you can click to save 2. You can click and drag the rack into a folder in your browser to save it in that location. If your rack uses any samples or max for live devices, it will create a project folder for you that contains all of the samples and M4L devices in it for you. Hope that's helpful and thank you for watching! :)

      Hm, I use a bunch of different ones! The Slate Drums are great, but they don't have M1 compatibly yet, which is annoying, so I've been using some of the ones that come with Komplete as well as MODO Drum from IK Multimedia. :) I don't know which library this particular break came from, but it was probably one of those!

      @@matttinklermusic Don’t get me started on the packs! Once again, Ableton just dumps instruments, racks, effects and samples with no explanation of what they are and how they work. I guess they really want you to hire a certified teacher to tell you how it works.

    Looks like a great learning video, but just got Ableton standard having used logic pro and have got third party effects like FabFilter, so not sure if you can use these third party in rack for macros etc. Did load TAL chorus and Fabs Timeless together but seems no chance of using macros. I sure there is a way, took me ages to work out automation with third party stuff and Ableton. (20 minutes later) Ahhh looks like i need to do it bit like automation, 'configure,' lots of clicking to get the effects third party in the box then it came up in macro with one of the third partys name listed instead of Macro 1 hopefully I can get used to it, and not so much guessing going on.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Рік тому

      Yep, it's all under the configure menu! Some plugins don't allow you to automate or map certain parameters, it all depends on the plugin, but provided the parameter can be mapped it'll work in exactly the same way in a rack! :)

    • @andytube555
      @andytube555 Рік тому

      @@matttinklermusic thanks for that Martin, I think I am trying to run before learning to walk, thanks for the update that some plugins might not configure. I think it was a case of should I have gone for the 'Suite' version as it was a lot cheaper to go from my lite version to suite than get the upgrade from standard to suite through Ableton, some reason can't find the standard to suite version in shops. Don't panic, no more silly comments from me, I will get my head down and learn Ableton. Cheers

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  8 місяців тому +1

      Automation is saved with the Ableton Live session, not with a preset or rack. You could create a clip to save modulation data, but the only way to save automation is in the Live session itself.

    • @UmaRecordings
      @UmaRecordings 8 місяців тому

      @@matttinklermusic So no way at all to export and import automation data? I think I was able to do that in Logic by saving midi data?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  8 місяців тому +2

      @@UmaRecordings I did some testing and turns out I was wrong! You can save automation in a clip (.alc file). All you need to do is select the clip and click and drag it into the browser, which will save it as a .alc file. Then when you import that clip into the session it will import the automation data as well as instrument and effects data. You can of course also have MIDI modulation data in the clips too. :)
