I just started throwing tubes and i love it. Caught my first bass of 2024 on it. I will say it is very tough if not impossible finding weedless jigs that are smaller than 3/0. Most jigs are too big for some tubes.
It always amazes me how anglers here in the deep south simply refuse to fish a tube. The common misconception is that they're northern baits for smallmouth only. I can tell you from experience that both largemouth and spots will absolutely crush a tube! I use them often.
Shhhhhhhhh, be quiet, be very quiet. They will forget this video in a week. But if they read your comment they may fish some and we both know you can’t catch a bass on a tube in the south 😉😁😎👍
It definitely gets a reputation as a northern bait only. I still have a bunch of the great big flipping tubes as well. Those are terrific bank beating lures.
I would have never thought to fish a tube on a Carolina rig. That looked really great underwater. Tube fishing is one of my weaknesses. You have inspired my Steve to get them out and try these retrieves. Great video!
It is amazing what that tube does on that C rig. Such a versatile lure. I remember the days when everyone was throwing tubes. Things sure go in cycles.
Bobby Garland came out with the gitzit in 1964 in Utah. well as soon as I became old enough to fish I grabbed a pack. I love them and have hammered more fish on them than anything else. here on Bull Shoals they love it! pair it up with an old hams weedless jig head throw it right into the brush piles! forget about that open hook boys that's why a lot of you don't throw it
Old school classic lures are my favorite. Tubes and curly tail grubs still crush em and most versatile baits out there. You can say the same thing about ribbon tail worms and lizards. Would love to see a video on grubs.
More great content, Steve. Gotta give a shout to my favorite tube presentation, the stupid tube. Weedless and glides like a dream, especially in river smallie fishing.
A rattle jig head in the tube is a great way to fish these. Also tube baits hold paste baits like power bait. These are both tricks that have significantly increased my bite ratio.
I use the tube as a alternative to a jerkbait in the spring .The bps double dipped tube with the eagle claw 1/8oz tube hook (3/0) is my choice due to extra bulk and a slower sink rate
That’s cool I didn’t know what a heavy jig head did to a tube, I got to try that soon! Got some juice for you, where I seem to get my big bass is on bluffs with a 4” tube and 1/8 oz jig head. And let spirel on slack line to the bottom, but if there’s a bass around it usually don’t make it , and they hit it with a peck. Real up the slack and hit them hard, very seldom miss them, keep the techniques coming, PS I was taught this by my brother n law 50 years ago, when he took me to pre fish his pro tournament. It was great I had those bass try to jerk the rod out of my hand, still got one tired on every time I go fishing! The old saying should apply to the tube “Don’t Leave Home Without It”👍🥸🙏
Caught some on a tube a couple weeks ago they would not bit a jig tube was the only thing I could get bit on fishing it Texas rigged to get through the cover . Great video.
Those spotted bass are so fun to catch! I remember the first one I caught on Table Rock years ago and was so impressed with how aggressive they were that day.
@@SteveRogersOutdoors I live about halfway between Lewis Smith Lake and Pickwick. It’s such a blessing to be where we have actual trophy sizes of all 3 species. These Alabama spotted bass are no joke. They get hard to handle at about 3lbs. Lol
That is a great question. I have watched bass when filming root deep into weeds to chase down and eat prey. While I can’t say that I have brought a fish into the boat that definitely ate a lure with slime or weeds on it, I have seen a bass swimming with a piece of vegetation hanging out of its mouth. This happened while filming in MN one summer. My thought is they prefer clean lures but based on some evidence I have seen, it wouldn’t shock me if they were hungry enough a little weeds in the lure wouldn’t bother them at all.
Great question. I like to use the Mustad Big Bite tube baits, or another similar hook style. For the 3.5" tubes I use a either a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. With that style of tube hook it lays on the back of the tube nicely and can still Tex pose it.

Man nothing like fishing a tube for the smallmouth. Love all your underwater work it's incredible
Great reminder of the value of classic baits that will still catch fish today and a great way to recycle baits that are hanging on my wall.

Can confirm, watermelon red tubes DESTROY Florida lakes and ponds 😎👌

I need to do a video on grubs for sure! I will add that to my contest list - thank you!
Swimming a tube is basically strolling 🎉
Another top shelf video! 👍
Thank you!
Hey Steve, good info, I fish a tube year round. Largemouth eat it up. Very versatile, lots of ways to fish it.
I just love how many ways there are to fish it. Like you said, such a versatile bait.
Great video!!! Thanks for the tips!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!🤠👍
Thank you for watching!
My biggest bass of the year so far was on a tube Hopefully that will change about 20 times or more this year.
Congrats! I hope there is a lot more of them as well.
Excellent video!
More great content, Steve.
Gotta give a shout to my favorite tube presentation, the stupid tube. Weedless and glides like a dream, especially in river smallie fishing.
That is a great way to use a tube! A very nice glide on the fall for sure.
A rattle jig head in the tube is a great way to fish these. Also tube baits hold paste baits like power bait. These are both tricks that have significantly increased my bite ratio.
I still have a bunch of the internal rattles for these. I definitely need to dig those out again. Thank you!
Great underwater stuff with this one, we'll done... i have a tube on deck everytime I fish.. shhhhhh it has all but been forgotten 😊
Lol. They have been forgotten for sure. I just hope factories keep them. I'm sure their popularity will come back some day.
Please do a video for bank fishing
I've got a few that I am working on. Hopefully they will be out soon.
Can't beat a tube for sure! My favorite tube set up recently is a swing head ned head with a zman small ned-tubz. It gets bit by almost anything
It is fun when you can expect to catch anything at anytime. Great lure.
#5 - Stuff a piece of an old senko worm into the tube so it holds shape and wacky rig it.
Excellent! Thank you for that.
Number six use a weedless oldhams jig head. Believe me that piece of wire protecting the hook does not bother the fish.
Hey, Steve, great to see ya and pray u are well. I have never used a tube before. I will have to try it. Be safe
Good luck with it! It has been key for so many great catches for me over the year. Have a terrific week!

I agree! Never leave home without a tube.

I like the looks of that Carolina rig a lot.
It is pretty amazing how great that fall looks!
My plastic arsenal would not be complete without these
It was amazing to watch at that retail event how so many customers just walked right by them. They will pick up in popularity again someday.
Swimming a tube works in the south too around schooling largemouth. Spot’s absolutely cannot resist it.

Hey Steve, when you bulldoze a tube (or drag anything on the bottom), can you still catch fish if there are some weeds or slime on the lure?
That is a great question. I have watched bass when filming root deep into weeds to chase down and eat prey. How do you hook your tubes when Carolina rigging?. Hook type? Size?
Great question. I like to use the Mustad Big Bite tube baits, or another similar hook style. For the 3.5" tubes I use a either a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. With that style of tube hook it lays on the back of the tube nicely and can still Tex pose it.
Did you have that tube rigged "stupid" on the Carolina?
Great question. It was just rigged normal Texas rig with a small hook.
What hook do you guys use for the carolina rig of the tube?
This one was a small 1/0 lightwire.
when carolina rigged what hook you using to get that slow weightless fall?
Those were smaller hooks. I use either a 1/0 or a #1. Most often a lightwire 1/0.
Steve, were you at the classic!? If you were I hate it that I missed you there!
I was actually at another retail event in central Illinois. It looks like there was a great crowd at the Classic expo!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors yes it was a huge gathering. If your ever down to Table Rock let me know, I’d love to go fishing with you!
I fish a Texas rigged tube 8 months out of the year and a regular stupid tube rig for about half the year too
That stupid tube has a great fall to it. Thank you for watching!
Lol SMART GITZIT!
Steve! Shhhhh!🤫
Lol. For sure.
That's exactly what I say don't tell a soul about it😊 they've all had their chance and don't give it the opportunity so forget them😮
@@scottjacopian3191 hahaha 👍
It would be good on a free rig
I definitely need to try that.
I've been using them with an 8 oz Texas rig for years it works
It is. 😎👍
One thing i hate about tubes is how bass swallow them. Almost every fish I have caught with a tube has been injured, much more so than any other bait.
On a single hook bait ??
If I could only use one kind of bait, I would use tubes.
They sure are efficient through all parts of the water column. Just love them.
One reason I don’t use them much they hang up to much!!
