    One thing I've noticed about the world of fishing tackle is that sometimes "floating" really means "sinks slower"... You should have heard me trying to teach a rookie about the "floating worm"...
    "Yes, they call it a floating worm, no it doesn't float... It just sinks very slowly, and you twitch it to keep it near the surface. I don't know why they don't call it the twitching worm instead... Yes you can drive on the parkway then park in my driveway."

    The way of the world, we are constantly being conditioned that we “need and should use” a more expensive alternative. I get it, but, usually I stay in a rut and use what works for me. Not saying it doesn’t happen occasionally but you would think “birds nests” lurk around every cast. They don’t at least for me, maybe I’m lucky. Also, a spare spool is something I always have with me. Just saying.

No stretch I said and told him that’s why he seems to always loose his big fish. He changed to mono and said, I hate to tell you this but your right I caught 2- 5 pounders today and got both in the boat!!! Appreciate Steve! Thx buddy for clearing that up for me! Another great explanation. In order to make sure that your monofilament floats, put on some "fly floatant" on the line. The comment by others that monofilament stretches is also applicable to flurocarbon, as some stretch more than mono and some less. I purchased some P Line topwater copolymer and it floats and supposedly stretches less and casts like a dream without the annoying noise of braid.

    • @SteveRogersOutdoors
      @SteveRogersOutdoors  11 місяців тому

      That P Line copolymer is a great line. I have used it a lot over the years. I should have grabbed some of that fly float from my fly kit. Didn't even cross my mind. I had heard that too about Fluoro actually stretching more but taking more force to do so. I would love to work on that one.

  • @FishDiver
    @FishDiver 11 місяців тому

    Great topic. you should do an entire series on Fluorocarbon myths, starting with line stretch. Fluorocarbon lines stretch just as much as nylon mono.

    • @MJ_Bass
      @MJ_Bass 11 місяців тому

      In lab tests, absolutely. I think the difference though is when you are lightly loaded, like with a jig or a crankbait, the mono will stretch and rebound under the weight of the lure while the fluoro doesn't. You can absolutely feel a huge difference in the feel of a crankbait when you are using fluoro vs mono line.

    Fantastic video as usual. I am curious how mono would work for jerkbaits, especially to keep them suspended versus fluorocarbon, which would make some suspending jerkbaits sink. Also, since I'm a hard-core dropshot angler and love when my baits suspend off bottom, I wonder if mono would help with that since I use a 10-20ft leader to braid.

    • @SteveRogersOutdoors
      @SteveRogersOutdoors  11 місяців тому +1

      Those are all excellent questions. I really am intrigued by the jerkbait. I will have to do some digging around on that one. I have always used fluoro on my jerkbaits to get a little more depth, but a nose-dropping experiment might be fun and see if any noticeable change can be witnessed with the action. Thank you for adding all this!

    • @shorefishingontario
      @shorefishingontario 11 місяців тому +1

      @@SteveRogersOutdoors I do use mono alot when I am float fishing for steelhead and I do notice that after a while, it starts to sink. I used to use mono for squarbills and still caught many fish. But I am considering switching to 10 or 12lb mono for my jerkbaits. I also wonder how clear it is compared to fluorocarbon. I am sure that horizontal presentations shouldn't matter too much.

    This explains what happened when I tried this. I noticed that the longer the cast, and the longer I let it sit still before working it- the more the fluoro affected the action of the bait. But- if it was a short cast, and I started working it the second it hit the water- I could run most top waters on fluoro without issues. Especially since I use braid to about 6-7 feet of fluoro leader- my water is either stained or muddy all the time and I've found that's all I need- 6-7 feet. Plus- it's very economical when you consider braid lasts for up to a year on my rods- sometimes longer- and I'm only using 6-7 feet of fluoro at a time. I run my leader until I can feel nicks or roughness when I slide my fingers over it- or I get snagged and break it off. I'm sure I'd be more anal about it if I were tournament fishing- but I'm just having fun. That said- so far, so good- haven't lost one due to a bad leader yet. I'm sure it will happen- probably when I finally nail I big one- but not yet.

    • @SteveRogersOutdoors
      @SteveRogersOutdoors  11 місяців тому

      That is a such a huge benefit of braid to leader. I remember when I first started doing that I was so impressed with the longevity of the braid. Thank you for adding all this.

    I do currently use Fluorocarbon for most of my crank baits, spinner baits and jigs and worms. But for decades i was completely happy with big spools of bulk monofilament. I honestly can’t tell a giant difference in the two lines.
    I would like to see you bust up another fishing myth. For many years I participated in bass tournaments as a co angler. I got to spend time with many champions of our sport. I have never seen any of those “pro anglers” physically cast their baits further than I could cast. I often read material and view content on videos of how anglers can cast 50-80 yards with no problem. I have never seen this distance achieved before. I took a builders tape measure in my yard, and a regular long cast for me is 25-28 yards. A freaking rare monster cast is 35-38 yards. This was using a heavy strike king deep diving crank bait and a 8 foot rod and 10 pound Fluorocarbon line. I would like to see a video that would address this fishing myth.

    • @SteveRogersOutdoors

      That is an excellent topic! I will have to dig into that one in depth. I will have to really think about how to measure that with some sort of control to eliminate a few variables. Great topic. Thank you!

    • @MJ_Bass
      @MJ_Bass 11 місяців тому +2

      I do think most guys vastly overestimate their casting distance, but you do have guys like KVD who can bomb a crankbait further than the average Joe I'm sure. Livescope is the best on the water ruler for distance, as I've heard others say, "40 feet is way closer than you think, and 100 feet is way further away than you think". I can cast a 1/4 ounce dropshot around 110 feet or so max, so I don't think cast a big plug on a long rod 50 yards is really all that crazy, but yah that is really bombing it and I doubt many are anywhere near casting 80 yards with bass gear.

    I know Swindle runs a flourocarbon leader on his buzzbaits and has no issues with it. Personally I like spooling up with mono for my topwaters and using more a regular action rod and relying on the stretch of the mono to soften the action of the rod once I'm hooked up. I'm not a huge fan of braid to leader on my baitcaster setups.

Didnt have my mono spooled baitcaster. My popper was STILL floating on top using fluro. I was shocked! The only observation was that in order to “pop” the bait you had to reel slack ( that was under water) until the line came to the surface. In all, I didnt see the tooo much diff with mono. And I caught a small LM bass. Go figure Steve!😂

    Just wanted t fill you in. I had commented about a monster jumping off then next week breaking my line, fishing same area. I had seen the one jump & was significantly larger than my current at time on 8lb 6oz. Well Sunday I went back locked & loaded with 15lb line & I hooked into another beast! She pulled my kayak all over left& right. I had keep switching sides so I didn't get spun completely around! I caught her a 9lb 3oz! She was 26" long & 16.5" in girth. Of course I released her. Second cast later I caught a 4lb 1oz. Thing I realized is. That big girl didn't have a hook in her lip or had any signs of holes or tearing. I use 10 lb mono on my glass rod. I use it for lipless, blade baits and whopper ploppers. I'll also take that reel and use it on an old 6'8 medium rod for whenever I want to do jerkbait fishing. I'm just a bank angler, so I don't feel the need to have dedicated setups for every technique, and I don't jerkbait fish enough either. The mono works perfectly well on every application, and is so much cheaper. I've never had an issue with this on a eqlking bait. When you've got a walking bait in the water the type of line doesnt matter. Theres always tension in the line, and the line and lure are always moving. The line doesn't have time to sink. you're always pulling it through the water. So for me its never made a difference what type of line I've used for a walking bait.

    Another myth, steve, that fluro has so much less stretch than mono. I tied two pieces ( one mono, one fluro ) on a fence post, paced off sixty ft. and pulled hard on both of them. Where's all the difference ?

      It is amazing how much stretch is in fishing line. The first time I did that I was just shocked. Thanks for adding this!

      @@SteveRogersOutdoors Right, steve, mono really stretches and the lighter the line the more it stretches. Another claim I've tested is the one about how much farther long rods cast than shorter rods. Go out in an open field and with the same line and reel throw a 5ft. rod against a 7.5ft.rod, I find the difference negligible, if any.

    Did you test different brands of line?

      I have not done a video specifically testing same pound test against different brands. I will have to. Thank you!

    I would like to see a comparison of mono vs. floro underwater. Great info man keep them coming.

    I never understood why everyone thinks mono floats?? I do alot of experiments in shallow cleaner water with my baits. So I know what they actually look like which what I'm doing with rodor reel. Mono definitely doesn't float! I never understood why everyone says it does? I do think floro si ka faster but not that much. I mostly use straight mon& floro. I don't know why people have gotten away from mono so much past years??

      It has definitely been a trend the last few years like you said.

    Excellent content. Additionally, I suspect the invisibility advantages of fluorocarbon are negligible in anything other than clear water. In binge watching your videos, I came across "The Locksmith". Really outstanding. That man demonstrated Godly grace and it shows how we can make a positive impact on others by living out the grace we've been shown.

      For sure! I would love to find him again and just let him what a huge impact he had on my life. I'm sure he has no idea the incredible reach he continues to have. Gives me goosebumps every time I think about it.

    I prefer Flourocarbon for 2 main reasons. Floruo has less memory than mono & the stretch. If it was as manageable as Flouro I would probably use mono.
