The zooms in Barry Lyndon speak volumes!!!! They are literally laying out the picture and showing the beautiful and PERFECT blocking!!! Recreating many of the artworks that motivated Kubrick! Omg….the zoom where Barry is found in the garden cheating is just purely perfection and hits like a hammer on a 6 inch nail!
Grand Budapest is EASILY my most rewatched film. As you said, everything about it is perfect to me. From the tone and the set design to the casting and score. Excellent
As a budding, teenage cinephile I became a Kubrick fanboy having only seen Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and Spartacus, either only on TV or in second run movie theaters. Seeing Barry Lyndon during it's opening run in December 1975, at the tender age of 19, still stands out as an amazing moment in my life. Hopefully, we can look forward to a 50th Anniversary 4K from Criterion next year.
If I had to start over, I would pick up Come & See, Andrei Rublev, Stalker, Secrets & Lies, Three Colors trilogy, The Night of the Hunter, On the Waterfront, Naked, and Raging Bull.
Geeze, there are some psychologically rough choices there. Come and See and Naked. I owned Naked but parted with it. Not something I really need to own
"Secrets and Lies" is the real must have on that list. It's a universal story. It's THE BEST kitchen sink drama ever made and it's Mike Leigh's masterpiece. Essential.
@@mmayer1558I didn't think about it before reading your comment, but almost all of my favorite films are major downers. I do like some comedies, too, like Happiness...🤣
On "DIABOLIQUE," you nailed it. It has such a universal, visual appeal that everyone can get behind it. My dad HATES subtitles, yet "Diabolique" is his favoeite film of all time. Now that's power 😂
This is as good a selection of 10 films as I've seen from any one individual. Mine would be much different (except for The Red Shoes, which is my no. 1 favorite film), and all of your picks are great.
While I'm definitely going to have a look at the films shown here I instead finally ordered the criterion release of WALL-E through your link and I'm super excited. Enjoyed the video, subscribed and will be checking out some of your other stuff:)
I dunno which one came first off the top of my head but little big man I’d put over Barry Lyndon any day and twice on Sunday. It’s just more my bag although I do like Lyndon as well. Dances and it’s wolves never out did either imho
Very heartfelt regarding Barry Lyndon - I tend to feel the same with regard to 2001 it’s my favourite Kubrick film. I actually don’t think I could start over with my Criterions it would be just too hard.
I got Barry Lyndon cause you mentioned it but I also like Kubrick. Great movie glad I got it but definetly not one of my favorites. But Its a good recommendation
I can confirm that your glowing recommendations convinced me a few years ago to check out Barry Lyndon. Now, I impatiently await an overdue 4K upgrade. 🤔 If you've never seen it, you might want to see if you can snag a copy of Mad magazine's issue #185 from September 1976. It includes the movie spoof, "Borey Lyndon." 😁
I need to get to watching Double Indemnity, it's on my shelf along with The Red Shoes and Diabolique. It'd be exciting if we get Paris, Texas on 4K in the future, it's just a bit of a waiting game with what may or may not get upgraded to 4K these days.
Great list! I’d love to see Barry Lyndon because of your recommendation, I’m just always on the fence about whether to wait for the 4K. I’m sure I’ll break one of these days and just stream it or buy the blu ray. My own list would include Ikiru, The Battle of Algiers, Ghost Dog, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
I'd be more than content restarting with just the Criterion Fellini, Bergman, Pasolini, Demy, Varda, Kurosawa, Dekalog, Ranown Westerns, BBS: America Lost and Found and Janus Anniversary box sets.
Great, unique question for a video! For me, I would prioritize The Killing-probably the Criterion disc I’ve watched more than any other. Other titles I’d be sure to grab would be Following, Andrei Rublev, and then the works of Richard Linklater and David Lynch.
Great Place to start with Double Indemnity. On the Waterfront. Would love for them to do a 4K. Don’t Look Now thanks to your recomendation. The Orson Welles catalogue they have.
It would be heartbreaking but if I had to start over now I’d go: The Ascent The Before Trilogy Inside Llewyn Davis The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp The Naked Kiss Paris, Texas Raging Bull Roma Tokyo Story The Tree of Life
For me, Barry Lyndon, All About Eve, The Wild Strawberries, Cries and Whispers, Persona, Double Indemnity, Grand Budapest Hotel, Rashomon, Ikiru, , After Life, Fanny and Alexander, Tampopo, A Hatd Day's Night, 8 1/2, Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita, the Before Trilogy, Tokyo Story, Carnival if Souls, Throne of Blood, Secrets and Lies, The Heiress, Inside Llewyn Davis, Notorious, Leave Her to Heaven, Kagemusha, Seven Samurai, The Innocents, Kwaidan. Just to name a few.
Worth mentioning that the German Arthaus release of Paris, Texas is currently the best version as it's from a 4K restoration. Criterion's old disc looks vastly inferior.
I suppose we can play the "top 10" game many other hobbyists do with their board games, watches, fragrances, etc. My might be something like this (English only, and in no particular order...never mind boxed sets!): Silence of the Lambs, 12 Angry Men, Detour, Following, The Others, Double Indemnity, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Blowout, To Be or Not To Be, The Game.
I think I would just rebuy the few Criterion's that I have (12 Angry Men, Double Indemnity, Kiss Me Deadly, On the Waterfront, Miller's Crossing and The Asphalt Jungle). Losing the whole Collection on the other hand...yea, I'm not sure that I would start again, given that some Editions are either heavily overpriced by now or OOP already. Do you know by any chance a website, besides Amazon and Ebay, where I could import US Blu rays from ?
i would argue kino lorbers release of 12 angry men is better because its a great 4k and comes with the 1997 remake with james gandolfini. not many releases come with an entire movie as a bonus feature
Out of the 200 Criterions I own, I'd have to restart with the ten movies I've watched the most: Hedwig and the Angry Inch A Face In the Crowd Pink Flamingos Lost In America Defending Your Life Ghost World Five Easy Pieces My Dinner With André The Player The Before Trilogy (cheating, but it's one purchase)
Well this isn't really a hypothetical for me. I actually sold off the Criterions that I could live without. I'm left with Powell & Pressburger films, Taste of Cherry, Fantastic Mr Fox, King of Kings
Hi I love most of Stanley Kubrick’s films, but I find Barry Lyndon one of the most boring films I’ve seen. Citizen Kane though I’ve seen multiple time and I think it’s one of the greatest films I’ve seen. Just my personal opinion, but we’re all different.
They can't all be winners for everyone! I commend you on getting rid of the film if you know you'll never watch it again - I know lots of collectors who don't have the guts to do that.
01. Memories Of Murder 02. After Life 03. Barry Lyndon 04. Seven Samurai 05. Tokyo Story 06. 12 Angry Men 07. Yi Yi 08. Parasite 09. Pan's Labyrinth 10. Tampopo Next ten films would all be Japanese...
Marvelous list. I gotta check out Hoop Dreams. Only from the ones I own myself: Being There, Five Easy Pieces, Girlfriends, Tampopo, Secrets & Lies, Smithereens, The Lure, One Night in Miami, Something Wild, Life Aquatic. A lot of Criterion films I have from another company. I can’t afford them all in Criterion format.
I had 1-750 and sold the lot. Used to love them but it means being locked in one label who are not world-friendly or world-minded. I will be buying the jean eustache blu-ray or 4K box set. La Maman et la Putain (1973) is one of the best films ever made. Criterion: don't hold it over for a year from the U.S to U.K release. That would be criminal and parochial.
Fair enough! Yeah, a Jean Eustache set would be most welcome. I don't know what the rights situation for those films is within the UK. Thanks for watching!
@@ElliotCoen According to the BFI, Criterion have the U.S and U.K rights (via Sony). if I could understand French, I'd have bought the newly released French box set. At least it'll get a release at some point after his family have been holding out for huge amounts of money for the rights'. It'll be an event when it's finally released. I enjoy your content- very soothing and informative.
My favourite FILM NOIR in the Criterion Collection ---> ua-cam.com/video/prU2RvNZ1aY/v-deo.html

When in the heck is Barry Lyndon gonna get the 4K treatment? Feels like a no-brainer to me.
Brilliant idea for a video! I'd love to make a video like this, but I don't know if I could ever narrow it down.

The Roger Ebert commentary of Citizen Kane is an incredibly insightful one about filmmaking. Would recommend.

i dont have many criterion releases myself but my top 3 priorities would be barry lyndon, the irishman, and pinnochio in that order
Since the last 2 sales I've heard a lot of people talk about Barrt Lyndon so I just ordered it from Amazon
Great minds think alike! My very 1st Criterion Blu-ray was Double Indemnity, the quintessential film noir movie
great pick with Hoop Dreams, might be the best docu I have seen
I found Double Indemnity to be average at best. Stalker was very good, Burns into the mind like a quality movie should.
Tess (Roman Polanski); Age of Innocence (Martin Scorsese); The Leopard ( Luschino Visconti) all look gorgeous on criterion bluray.
I can confirm that your glowing recommendations convinced me a few years ago to check out Barry Lyndon. Now, I impatiently await an overdue 4K upgrade. 🤔

Just bought Barry Lyndon from The Criterion Collection, even though I already owned it in the boxset.
The 4K restoration used on Criterion’s disc is a step up from older versions, so enjoy!
