I have Barcelona Red Toyota, the base cost was $200 for a pint. I went to Autozone bought 4 Duplicolor rattle cans for the hood and roof for $25. The reason people are using spray cans isnt because of the cost of the material, its because of the cost of good equipment. larger compressors, air filtration, (good) spray guns are expensive. then you have to know how to use them, and mix the paint and hardeners and thinners, which tips to use, how to dial the air and the fluid. When a paint shop charges thousands for a paint job, the material cost is almost immaterial to the process. People use spray cans because they dont have the equipment, they dont know how to mix anything or use the right tip or dial the air or fluid, you push the button and paint comes out. so that $90 vs $120 base color comparison makes spray paint not make sense for you. but you have thousands in equipment, and years of experience laying paint. Anyone can pick up $150 in spraycans from home depot, and if their prep work is good, they can get decent results. Add in about $250 for those 2k clearcoat cans and you can get a better than factory Toyota paint job for Maaco price. If you or a buddy has a DA polisher and know how to use it, you're can take that clear coat close to a good factory American/European car paint job.

Having done the Rusto, I forget how many cans I did end up going through on my small car, but I'll say it was around 8-10, and my Sentra was smaller than that Celica. That doesn't count primer cans, either. So I think you're right on that estimate, especially because I think your primer was probably very porous, whereas I think the Rusto "filler primer" was less porous. I think the advantage of doing it the spray can way, even if you can't justify it completely in dollars and cents is that with rattlecans it's much easier to go panel by panel during 1-3 hour kinda stints after work or whatever, and just do a fender or a door at a time, and eventually after a few weeks or months have the whole car done. I wouldn't do "two coats" but I would do about 3 passes, first pass really light, and second and third passes progressively heavier. My fingers were cramping just watching you guys use those aerosol cans 😆. Rust-Oleum actually sells a nice spray can handle called a Comfort Grip, #241526. Works great. Thanks for the video 👍🇺🇸
They're plastic entry-level grip is terrible the Comfort grip is not much better just with a rubber coating on it and using any kind of trigger handle throws the weights so far forward it's ridiculous I just thumb Claw at the old graffiti special and I get so much better nozzle control
I not a professional but have painted a car on the cheap before and yours came way better ! That said maybe just me and everyone else know, but I saw some orange peel in the clear when you were spraying. Did you cut and buff it and I'm just suppose to know everyone finishes that way or does your clear coat level out as it settles on the car ? I love it that you do in depth videos on the Rustoleum and shop grade stuff. There is so much you can do with these basic paints. I’ve never attempted to clear a rustoleum paint but want to try. Do you find you have to let the color flash/cure before clearing or just spray clear when it’s dry?

It was the blue sharp edge scotch brand. Not sure if I did something wrong and the clear didn't adhere to the base?
You shouldn’t put bondo overpaint and, if your going to put bondo over paint, get t rough with 80 grit, and, you don’t want to get water on bondo, it soaks up water like a sponge
Actually that's not correct... It's best to put bondo over a coated surface so it doesn't rust underneath.. In the really high scale body shops they put body filler over self etch primer or something else coated so moisture doesn't build behind the bondo and rust over time.
My husband has been doing paint and body work for 20 years and he never takes the wings off of a car and has never used a paint booth and there is little to no debris in the paint.

ive been looking for a color for my mustang for a little over 9 years now, since my mom passed. she had this color in mind and Im wondering if you guys can replicate it for one of these projects. its a forest green to black or black to forest green color shift. the car is black now and I want it to look black from far away or at night, and only when you get close or its in direct sunlight it shows hints of green. ya know if i go to a body shop and ask them to create this color its gonna cost me 5 to 7k and the car is only worth 2k it just doesnt make sense.
Regardless of what a car is worth. All body shops have the same length of time that goes into every car and have to charge for it. That's why almost every where you go paint jobs are 5000-20,000$ and inflation hasn't helped that buddy

Most jobs don't specifically need primer

people hate on it, but I love rattle can paint jobs, gloss black, on a old rusted out work truck I use for my lawncare business every 6 to 10 years, keeps her looking pretty decent for the age. especially with these midwest winters not being kind to dodge ram bodies lol.
My fingers were cramping just watching you guys use those aerosol cans 😆.
Rust-Oleum actually sells a nice spray can handle called a Comfort Grip, #241526.
Works great.
Thanks for the video 👍🇺🇸
@stevec5657 Pain is an important part of the process, it helps deter you from considering using spray cans in the future.
@@SpeakerKevin true
They're plastic entry-level grip is terrible the Comfort grip is not much better just with a rubber coating on it and using any kind of trigger handle throws the weights so far forward it's ridiculous
I just thumb Claw at the old graffiti special and I get so much better nozzle control
Because O can't see buffing that out on such a cheap job and the finish pictures it didn't look like the orange peel was there ? just wondering because you said you sell the clear coat !
Looks great! Considering a Rustoleum paint job on my budget hot rod build. Got a bit of rust repair to take care of first though.
Three cans for $20? In Canada manufactures raised the price from $6 to $15 for one can!
Holy crap
I concur...we get ripped at every turn. Thanks Canada!
Looks great with the clear coat, Just wish you would have done it with Rusto clear to make it a 100% Rusto job but still came out really nice.
Rusto clear is acrylic laquer. Lasts all of a year out in the sun. Absolutely junk.. Just a heads up

Since it's an oil base paint... did you do multiple coats ? Also flash time before clear coat??
Sometimes I will paint my old work trucks with a gallon of rustoleum, acetone, and hardener. Will that clear coat still work ok ?
It can however single stage is the same price and works better
I found out last week when I git bored you can use smr42 over krylon spray paint, I used my fathers wheels as a test mule because he didn't believe me lol.
Yup!
What kinda clear coat did you use? And also i long did you let the paint sit before you added the clear?
Smr1150. And 1 hour
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 ok thanks. I use Rust-Oleum alot. Sometimes rattle cans and never really found a nice clear for it. Appreciate it
👀👍🏽 not bad. I've never rattle canned a car but I've done small parts so for that to come out looking so respectful I'd say another win🏁🏁🏁
Thanks!
Great job, If you told me this car was painted with spray cans I wouldn't have been able to tell.
I want to paint my roof and my hood a different color from what the car is with the rest of the car stay the same do I have to strip all the paint off and prime before I paint the hood and the roof or can I just scuff it up and spray it over with the new color?
You can just scuff and spray
Very informative thank you. I can see where this would be a lot of fun with a good running old car!
Yea it was fun. Not cheap but fun.
How did you get rid of the tiger stripes? Does the clear blend them out? Painting a hood at the moment with cans and those stripes are killing me.
Doesnt the filler absorb water? Thats what I was taught
Yes it does dessicant beads soak up Any moisture in the system
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 so why did you wash the car with water without priming? Im curious
@@Semek7 gets all the contaminants off, pressure washes all the dust out of the sand scratches for maximum adhesion.
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 Ok I see that but I still would prime the spots where I used bodyfiller. Thats what I was taught and what we did where I worked at. Good job anyway
Is it true that the prep work is way more important than the actual paint that goes on? That's just what I was told
Yes
Amazing paint job this turned out to be. Once u hit it with your clear it really woke it up. What air filtration system should I buy for my home garage to clean the air?
It's a 4 stage air filtration system for the air compressor
I'm surpised you didn't get the Spraycan Gun handle to help with the paint process.
OTHER THAN THAT! I love this!!!
Thanks!!!!
Wait... Rustoleum is oil-based paint as I recall, so how are you clearcoating over oil-base?
No idea 😂😂😂
So the clear coat goes on right after the painting or can it go on at a later date? When do you cut and polish? I have no experience but i hear it here all the time. Cut and polish
You guys inspired me to paint my car like this and y'all did an A1 job thanks for making this video 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯

i guess the major question is how does it hold up? anyone with it after a couple of years of harsh summer sun? ,,really is interesting it works being an uncatalized color but so is regular water bourne as well as solvent basecoat, very interesting ,,thanks for posting

I like it. Back in the '80s, I tried rattlecanning an old Cutlass with acrylic lacquer and no clearcoat. Actually it was Duplicolor Bahama Blue metallica....( Ain't My Bitch ) 😆 I was experimenting with cut and buff.....it was okay....wish I could've had pictures of it.
That was when you had to actually buy film for a camera!
Damn....I'm older than dirt!
There was no UA-cam then!

I love it that you do in depth videos on the Rustoleum and shop grade stuff. There is so much you can do with these basic paints. I’ve never attempted to clear a rustoleum paint but want to try. Do you find you have to let the color flash/cure before clearing or just spray clear when it’s dry?
Yes 1-3 hours
Man love it I miss those rattle can days in the earlier videos I know you and bens fingers was tired after the 13 cans of paint 😂
😂😂😂yes
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 😂😂 and I mint to tell ya rustoleum got those new cans it’s got a real nice spray pattern on it it’s got like 5 settings on it
why wouldn't you get a quart ($16) of that color instead? all you have to do is thin it out and spray it with a real paint gun instead..
They don't sell this color by the quart.
Number 2 spraying cars with tractor paint is extremely stupid and not cost effective when I can do real automotive paint for just a hair more money
Do you need to sand or wet sand the spray paint before applying the clear coat?
Nope
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 even if you have to wait a few days from the last basecoat and miss the tacky window for the clear? The reason I ask is because I did wait a week from the last base coat, then I put on satin 2k clear and I put masking tape over an area three days later and the clear coat came up with the tape. It was the blue sharp edge scotch brand. Not sure if I did something wrong and the clear didn't adhere to the base?
Thank you for getting back to me too.
@@derekshane8786 just wait about 30-60 min then put clear coat on
You shouldn’t put bondo overpaint and, if your going to put bondo over paint, get t rough with 80 grit, and, you don’t want to get water on bondo, it soaks up water like a sponge
Wow nice, glad I ain't the only one
Why so close to paint with the clear? Could have avoided the runs

The Rusto 2x aerosols spray in any direction so you cannot spray out the gasses.
ive been looking for a color for my mustang for a little over 9 years now, since my mom passed. she had this color in mind and Im wondering if you guys can replicate it for one of these projects. its a forest green to black or black to forest green color shift. the car is black now and I want it to look black from far away or at night, and only when you get close or its in direct sunlight it shows hints of green. ya know if i go to a body shop and ask them to create this color its gonna cost me 5 to 7k and the car is only worth 2k it just doesnt make sense.
Regardless of what a car is worth. All body shops have the same length of time that goes into every car and have to charge for it. That's why almost every where you go paint jobs are 5000-20,000$ and inflation hasn't helped that buddy
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 yeah ofcoarse I just dont have it like that so im forced to do it myself. like i have a ram 2500 and the mechanic told me it would need to be 2800$ to repair the hub bears brakes and ujoints. i ended up buying all parts for 276$ off amaon free two day shipping and I needed to do it myself. while I understand where youre coming from and the hard work you and a bunch of shops do. I just don't have it like that and probably never will.
Hey and that's fine. Just understand that's a personal problem we as professionals and businesses can't fix. A business can only help those whom can afford there services. Your honestly to simply admit you can't afford it and not try to gas light the business into making them feel bad about there prices is cool I respect it. Cause most people try to guilt trip me and make me feel like my prices are to high when in all reality I am charging what everyone else is. Why should I charge less? Why should I de value myself for others?
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 in the future though it can turn into an everyone problem. if consumers can't buy goods and services as we are seeing on a greater scale through the American economy now. a lot of small businesses will be killed off and bought up. im sure you ride the fine line of your margin to get the best price for customers and you don't over charge anyone because that would be immoral right? lol

If it's texture that has a tiger strip form and it's a solid color sometimes yes cause the clear coat can cover up this imperfection. Mettalic colors not so much.
