The white leaf is a hidden gem from Chichibu it is a very complex blended malt and is amazing with ice on hot summer days. It is truly a gift from Ichiro to consumers on a budget. From where I live, this costs 2x more than in Japan which is still worth it. I would pick this over Blue label everytime.

Nice surprise Mac. I was expecting a Peated Ao review, but, this was much more fun. Price in Europe is from €59 to €79 so it's sometimes hard to dish out the more expensive price for this. I do most of the time pick up a bottle when in Japan as an evening sipper

I've been looking at trying some of these "world whiskeys" and was getting ready to pull the trigger on a bottle of Ao, but I might see about getting the Malt and Grain now!

Great video, Mac, and as often, if not always, the most comprehensive one I've ever seen about this expression (yes, I"'m not ashamed to say I've learned a few things there, and World Blend is a great category when disclosed, and it is one I'm interested myself as a blender & let's say currently it is w.i.p. on my side, I've lots of ideas about this, but I'll resume working on some once I'll be in full recovery). Now I have questions & doubts about my bottle of Ichiro's Malt "Pure Malt" (Blended Malt) "M.W.R.", is it fully Japanese (I always thought it was made of Chichibu & Hanyu only) based on what you know ? Thanks in advance /PS: Maybe it's interesting to mention that in France, the "Malt & Grain'" is sold here for 79,90 €, so, as always, not exactly the Japanese prices ! Lucky Japanese !

Not into other grains than barley, but do find consistency/inconsistency interesting, just to see if consistency can be pulled off. I do like Suntory's funky shaped bottle.
Just priced out Ichiro's malt whiskies.....major league stuff😢 Sad to say I'll never have a go at that.

Thank you for this. This is something that I can buy in the US west coast. But alas... it's a $99 proposition. Knowing that it's a $30 bottle in Japaan, I'm even less likely to want to try a bottle. I REALLY hate the wacky prices for Japanese whisky in the states.

Excellent video Mac! Very surprised (and also happy to hear) that the more recent batch gets your seal of approval compared to the earlier batch. I find that whisky quality in general seems to be going backwards - lower abv, worse quality casks, moving to chill filtration and colour additives etc. Not normally a fan of blends compared with single malts, but good to see that this is non chill filtered with no colour added!
Unfortunately it’s about $155 here in Australia, so I may wait until I’m in Japan before trying!
Also, I can’t believe that Ichiro has it with hot water - I’ve never thought of that.

Oyuwari is very popular here as a shochu serving style, so people wouldn't think too much about having a whisky with hot water too.

Subscriber growth, and how that correlates to views, is an interesting phenomenon. Not sure I will ever be able to figure it all out!

Hi mate, just wondering if you know, or will be doing a video, on the Yamazaki Tsukuriwake set?
Hi Richard. Great question. Suntory released a domestic Yamazaki Tsukuriwake set in 2020. They have now released that same set overseas in 2022, without the Bordeaux bottle. I have toyed with the idea of simply doing a drinkthrough on the 2020s, and not worrying too much about the Kanpai Planet level of info which I usually require in order to create a video. Let's just say it is in a very long pipeline.

Excellent review Mac. This literally comes a day late, as i was in a store yesterday where they have this. Not gonna lie I might be tempted to pick one up. Only downside is that here it's closer to €80 than the €30 ish MSRP. Kanpai!

It is great drum for suggested retail price, but unfortunately in US exceptionally expensive, for $80 plus minus it's hard to make myself to get another one. Great review as usual thank you

I really like Japanese culture besides whiskey and it's always interesting to me because I grew up in Republic of Georgia and will have a huge culture unfortunately we don't have a good whiskey We do have a great wine being a country where winemaking originated(debatable), I've really enjoyed culture of eating drinking and sharing. Have you heard about a white leaf Chichibu blend?
This is the same hite bottle, as it is still referred to by some people! Some older batches used to have Chichibu Blended Whisky on the label

It obviously is no longer a reasonably priced whisky. Just in two years it has gone up from $30 a bottle to $110 or more. No way will I buy this for that price.
