Kanpai Planet is proud to present one of the world's first reviews of the first two CORE RANGE Single Malt Whisky releases from the Sakurao Distillery: Sakurao and Togouchi 43%
In 2021, the Sakurao Distillery dropped '1st Release Cask Strength' bottles of Sakurao and Togouchi (reviewed here: • New REAL Japanese Whis... ). Now, one year on, they are following up with regular release versions of these bottles!
I put these new versions head-to-head, and compare them to the 1st Release Cask Strength Sakurao and Togouchi too!
We're giving you a chance to get in on the ground floor of one of Japan’s most under-rated new distilleries, with a primer and review of TWO new REAL Japanese Whiskies - Single Malt Sakurao and Togouchi from the Sakurao Distillery.

Your tasting notes of the Togouchi reminds me a little bit of Hakushu 18 (if you leave out the peat)! Interesting!

I am lucky to have found the Sakurao Single Malt for 6600 yen in Akiba's Bic Camera last week. I had to pack it in one of my friends' bags flying back home (my own being filled up to the legal brim with sake bottles), so I'm hoping to taste it in a couple of days! Cannot wait! Great video. But the Saikurao Cask Strength is selling for $550 in the USA. The only seller I can find is Cask Cartel and they frequently rip off their customers .

Well that settles it, I've got to keep my eyes out for these now. Interesting that they feel like they're nicely more rounded off and developed, despite the age.

Interesting that they now bring us some more (in theory, I suspect twice of the RPP for Japan) affordable new products from this distillery...hoping they'll arrive soon here. Great to have your feedback on those. Kanpaï !

Great content as always Mac! Is there a reason behind lots are released at 43% abv?
The official answer is that this is the percentage that they felt best reflected the desired profile. My feeling is that its low but not as low as 40%.

Retail Pricing in France is 69 for the Togouchi (in the same bottle as their fake stuff) and 79 for the Sakurao. The 43% versions were actually released in Europe before they were in Japan by Les Whiskies Du Monde, so your mileage in getting them might be different.

Great review again! Sadly the bottles you review are often hard to find at the RRP. The Sakurao 43% is not 6,600 yen but 9,200 yen on Amazon.jp... Need to find myself a better bottle shop...

Affordable? Here in the Netherlands they easily fetch 300 bucks
I'm referring to the Japan RRP
Got the Sakurao local in a german Online-Whisky Store for 63 Euros, minus the 5 Euros in Voucher for subbing to their Newsletter. Really do think this is a great deal for a Japanese Single Malt with natural color and non chill filtering. The Togouchi Single Malt is a little longer available here, the Sakurao is now officially distributed in Germany since a few months and that should erase any absurd prices of Re-Seller. I also do think that this is a european licensing deal and I do think that thhe Togouchi and Sakurao should have a good availability in Europe now.
