Theory: you’re representing how you feel on the inside, struggling mentally and battling depression, and that’s why you’re a zombified Mothica in the video. Everyone around you sees life in color, but you see only grey. Toxic positivity is tough to deal with so you just have to be there physically with these people despite not being there mentally while they celebrate your birthday. You’re an outcast with this group. You can’t relate to anyone and finally at the end find someone else who’s “already dead on the inside” who you can relate to. I think this is a powerful message and very creative video!! 🖤

Its the only real way to live, otherwise youre at the bottom of a pit pulling everyone in with you and causing an endless cycle of self pity and shallow beliefs

I love how this video has so many levels to it. First off, she's a zombie because she feels dead inside. I liked how all of the party people seemed super bright and happy- often when I'm feeling "like a zombie", everyone around me seems almost obnoxiously happy. I think also it seemed like she was trying to do normal things (brush teeth, eat, smile), but it felt wrong and forced, like going through the motions (😉). It's a perfect representation of what so many of us feel like- totally empty on the inside but trying to act smiley for everyone around us. I also feel like at the end she finds another person like her, and by taking the girls' arm, Mothica takes a little piece of her with her. Basically- it was a dope video. Mothica, bravo you've done it again 👏

My theory is walking through life feeling as though you've already died while everyone around you is alive and happy, and they keep giving you things that will "make" you happy or make you alive like them, even though it doesn't work and it doesn't bring you back. my theory: this is basically a metaphor for having depression and having to still go through life. depression and or depression meds can make you feel like zombie going through life, while others are happy but also no ones notices bc theyre too caught up in their own worlds. idk if that makes sense or not but oh well

theory: all the people wearing yellow could mean that they’re living a problem free life, they’re full of happiness and joy. perhaps there’s toxic positivity involved with all the yellow since there was a poster with a smiley face saying “Keep on smiling”. all the black has to do with depression/sadness in one’s life, the same thing with the makeup. in fact, the makeup makes it look like you and the other person look dead (enter a dead inside joke). once someone meets someone like them, they’re content thus the ending of the music video.
edit: i don’t know how i missed this but i recently rewatched the video multiple times in a row to see if i was right, and i saw someone wearing the heart shaped glasses but it was a rosey colour instead of yellow. this could be a reference to the saying of looking through rose tinted lenses. idrk, just a thought.

Theory: when one is that numb (dead on the inside) there is little to no relating to those around them living their happy-go-lucky lives. There is just more loneliness and emptiness. When you finally do find someone with that in common it can instantly draw you together.

Listened to Mothica’s forever fifteen EP a couple weeks ago so when this came up in my recommended I thought she’d dropped something new, and I noticed the same with upside. They’re both on the album so I have heard them before, but I haven’t listened to either a ton since, and the amazing thing is it feels new again. You can listen to one of her songs a second time and it can feel like the first time again, all these little eccentricities to her music and the added dimensions of the videos can give you a whole new perspective and make you appreciate the song in a way you didn’t before. She’s really a great in my book for that and many other things

this video to me is about seeing everybody around you be able to feel happyness while feeling like you can't because you're dead inside (zombie). the part where she is eating on the floor could either be about her eating disorder, and the part at the end when the girl's arm rips off while she walks away could be about her not being able to continue the relationship or it could just be a goofy thing to end the music video.

Theory: Basically everything you’ve ever done cringey or bad runs in a loop in you’re head. Everything bad you think about yourself and you’ve heard from others has already been said or thought by you about yourself so nothing anybody says now can hurt you. You put on a facade everyday and pretend to be happy around friends or acquaintance because you think it’ll help you feel better, but you still feel dead and numb on the inside. Nobody seems to understand this so you just keep on trying to pretend like you’re happy
I think the video is about being depressed, when you feel dead inside (zombies are half-dead) so she is literally half-dead in this video, hanging with people she doesn’t like, they can‘t hurt her because she is numb anyway, just like zombies can‘t feel anything, the outside will be fine as she puts on a mask & no one can see her depression, the smiley emojis add to this, people tell you to smile & you fake it, all the yellow being a happy color also adds to this metaphor

it is about the pressure of acting happy when you know you're supposed to be but you can't genuinely be happy or enjoy yourself, you're dead inside. everything seems insignificant and stupid (not caring abt the bday) because the horrible dark thoughts in your mind take over everything (there's a little voice running through my head reminding me of those stupid things i said). the outside world and how you feel are just a a contrast that nothing ever feels real anymore and you are numb to everything happening around you as we see her ignoring her bday party in the video. also the fact that no one even noticed something wrong reflects how people would rather you be fake happy than have to deal with you being sad. but oh on the upside at least no one can hurt you since you're already at your worst!
at the end mothica finds someone else who is dead inside and they are able to connect because they understand each other and are in that same world.
