We are buying this for our church in a few weeks. These videos are amazing! Thank you for posting such incredible content and for being a clear communicator.
Loved all your videos on the X/M32 console platforms! Thanks for making a great video on this smaller console. I have a few of these in my inventory and use them often on small gigs... Or send them out as camp systems for worship bands. Keep it up Drew!
Always liked your Behringer X32 and other x device videos. Great job on the thorough detail of this device. Already have the x32 and looking to add this on.
Drew thank you for the awesome introduction. I got my X air about a year ago and still have questions about this rig. I appreciate all the great content you provide and looking forward to the full breakdown videos using a DAW.
Thanks so much for such a thorough explanation. I agree with all of the fellow viewers. Your fast pace explanation and knowing when to choose not to go into detail was salient. Great Video indeed. I'll be back again and again :-).
Excellent source of information for folks just unboxing this baby. I was starting to think I ordered the wrong piece of equipment when I didn't see any outs but after watching I now know I need to use the USB now. Thanks Drew, I found this really helpful.
Am considering this mixer, and really appreciate the concise and articulate overview, very thorough. This was an excellent presentation, glad to subscribe.
Thanks for pointing out the issues with the built in WiFi access point. I (and others) confirm that issue. Just using an external access point does wonders for range and reliability.
Looking forward to better understood XR18 tutorials, you're very good at covering it from basic. Setting gain structure with the XR18 would be a great topic too. 👍
Thanks, Drew. I scoured Midas (because I'm researching the M18) and other UA-cam videos; this is the BEST overview I've seen. Your knowledge of Behringer and Midas gear is second to none!
Absolutely use a dedicated wifi router or hard-wire for events. I used this for an event with 6 presenters and about 300 attendees. Everything worked perfectly until the doors opened, then once everyone came in I was completely unable to connect to the mixer. One mic chanel was open, so I ended up having to swap cables for each presenter. Thankfully the client never knew what happened, and I was able to manipulate the levels with the controls on my Shire UHF-R receivers. The event went off without a hitch due to careful setup before everyone came in, but I was unable to control the mixer until everyone left the room again. Now I will not use it professionally again without having it hard wired and the internal wifi switched off.
Having very little live show experience myself I cannot imagine the panic I would feel in that situation. You’re a real expert in my book if your equipment fails and no one knows except you.
@@AlcaHolicGamer Had 15 channels set ready for church service for Christmas Eve and 10 minutes before the start of the service the ipad and the mixer quit communicating. had to scramble to connect Y and Tri cables to the microphones and shove everything through the 4 inputs to the old (but not disconnected) house amp that is 24 years old. No sound check. Just flying by the seat of the pants and adjusting as the service moved along. Wireless never again. Laptop over Ethernet cable only from now on. After the service and everyone left, the ipad and the mixer would connect again.
Good job Andin. Deal with the problem so nobody else notices it. That is the spirit. As a sound engineer of live events for 20 years, I had my share of these. The motto always remains: do not do it wireless if you can do it with a wire. If you have to do it wireless, be sure to have plenty of backup possibilities. Today sound setups are almost always with the "mixer" on stage and the "remote control" in your front of house arrea. I ALWAYS run an Ethernet cable. Never count on WiFi in crowded places. You learned the hard way as I did also :)
year its 17 inputs those TRS sockets channels 17/18 can't be split from a single stereo channel. The X-edit software sees the 17/18 on the XR18 the same way as the tape deck return on the X18. You also can't split the gain and channel strip processing (EQ, Gate & Compressor) on 17/18.
Good run through of the XAir, Drew. I've been using this unit for nearly two years and always speak very highly of it. I have installed the XAir into several churches and they all simply love it as well. Even when am on the road doing events guest engineers find it very easy to navigate and produce flawless shows. I look forward to your upcoming videos on the XAir. PS ... True I have always ran mine with an external router and have never had a problem even in very high demand areas like at concerts with hundreds of cell phones looking for a connection.
Mr Keebler, I hope you can still check the comments. I'm looking at purchasing this mixer for our youth group space. I was hoping you can share a tip or two of must haves when I set up the space. It's a brand new space that's currently in the building process, so I'm starting with a clean slate as far as set up goes. Thanks for any assistance you can provide, if you ever see this :D
The biggest reason to use a stand-alone router is that the XR18 does not automatically change channels. So if someone is on the Behringer channel you set up (as the wifi network host) it is a pain to change. Reason being, once you set it up you can forget how to change the dedicated channel since you (preferably) do it as a set-and-forget, not to mention you need to use the unit without interruption. The external router changes channels when it detects interference.
I have thaught of bying this for a long time! Great video!! But i have found that the x18 is rather cheeper than this one. What is the difference betwen these two? Besides the shape and the aux out.. Is there some difference in the software or is it a problem with the wifi because the x18 doesn’t have an antenna??
Hi Drew, Thank for taking time to help Us with the videos, my question is: if I use the USB port as an input for Waves, this means I lose the option to record the Multitracks ? if so, Berhinger would have left us at least one way to record the Stereo with a USB drive port.
Great job on this video, clearly explaining the unit, at the end of the video, you mention that you were going to publish additional videos on this mixer! Have those been posted/released yet, I just bought this unit and I’m a little/lot lost! Thanks
Hey Drew, thanks for those videos. quite enlighting! I'm thinking bout getting the midas mr18 which obviously is pretty much the same thing. Do you by any chance know if it's possible to connect a fader wing to your via ethernet connected laptop to have some sort of faders for the mr18? Thanks for your help! Till
Thanks Drew - I've owned the XR18 for a couple of years now and it has a bit of a learning curve; I very much look forward to your other tutorials on the subject. By the way, I purchased your XR18 presets and they work very well. Currently I am running somewhat of a complex setup (at least to me), with both Ableton Live and the XAir Control app running on my MacBook Air. I use Ableton for backing tracks, which I bring into the XR18 through six USB channels, together with several microphones and live instruments that run directly into the XR18. The XR18 is incredibly versatile in this respect. Anyway, things are working pretty well, although sometimes accounting for USB inputs on the one hand and the instrument and mic inputs on the other is tricky for me. Thanks again for posting; it is very helpful. David
David Judson - Trying to determine if the X-Air effects library works with a Mac. Based on the comment above regarding a MacBook Air I assume the answer is yes. Is this correct? I don't want to drop $67 only to learn there is a compatibility problem with my mid-2014 MacBook Pro Retina 15". Thanks in advance!
Yes, the Effects library has worked well in my setup. I've used the Female Vocalist, Acoustic Guitar, and perhaps one or two others. There was a noticeable improvement to the FOH sound with Drew's EQ settings. There have been no compatibility issues at all. XR18 is very stable in my setup, although I note I use the hardwired Ethernet connection instead of the WiFi.
When you say Stage Box is a stage box something that is on stage with all mice plugged that provides a separate mix for monitora/in ears and then can send a fixable signal to FOH?
have a question, which is better? the Xair or the behringer x32 digital console ? im undecided which to get ..i really like the size of the XAir and portability
where can I find all the XR18 videos that you promised would be coming over the next few weeks, it's been almost 2 years. The intro was great and just bought the mixer and was looking forward to seeing more
Thank you for answering clearly the question of not being able to use it as a stage box! PTL! That’s exactly what I needed to know! However for anyone looking to use it as I am, I have found a solution. I think. We’ll see. I wanted to use this for a mediator between the inputs and somehow build an in ear rig in a roadcase rack on stage that lets musicians mix their in ears on the ios app (saving money not having to get P16’s) and instead using the XLR outs and the behringer P1 personal headphone amps (saving money not having to buy thousands of dollars worth of wireless IEM’s) ALL of that while still giving FOH a direct line somehow from the instruments and vocals to mix at FOH unaffected by and changes made in the XAir. Something like the X32 rack WOULD be great (since this does not work as a stage box) but the X32 is just too much for what I need as far as what it offers and a little pricey. SO.... I found a perfect solution... I think, ha. I plan to run all 12 of the instrument/mic inputs into two small rack units I found called “ART S8’s” which take the inputs and split the signal of each into two clean outputs(female XLR ports) and it does this without losing any gain or quality. I then plan to run the first of 2 outputs (coming from the S8 splitter) out of the S8 and directly to FOH using either an XLR snake or digital snake whichever the venue has. Now... The 2nd output from the S8 for each channel will then go directly into the XR18 racked directly below it. If all works as I hope, I would then (in theory) use the behringer P1’s connected to the Aux outs on the XR18 via XLR cables to give each band member a dedicated 1/8th inch in ear plug in with a volume knob/belt clip. And again “in theory” they couldd then each go into their dedicated aux out mix on the XAir app, and mix their own personal monitor mix how they would like, being able to EQ how they would like, make changes on the fly using their phones or iPads etc. I would be able to multitrack into logic from the USB (added bonus), and do so all while not tampering with or interfering with the direct, pure, straight signal going to FOH from each input on stage using a snake. Please tell me if this idea is total trash and my creative mind has completely screwed this up 😂
The approach you described would work, though depending on your budget, what the venue has/who is mixing your sound, it may be better to go for a different solution. An X32 rack -->AES50 cat5e--> X32(or midas) FOH desk would allow you to all of this, except having the option to seperate the gains of your monitor and FOH inputs, but with less cables. If you have the same sound engineer, who perhaps has their own x32 then it may be easier & slightly cheaper to go this route instead.
This is a fantastic mixer and I own one my self and love it. Be careful if you are trying to use it in a club situation and use the cat5 hook-up . The internal router is just not up to par and will drop out a lot ....be aware ....
I have a question. When on the bus/FX send fader page on the android app for each channel I have my bus routing set for pre EQ and FX set post fader. When scrolling through the channels using the left right arrows at the top of the page you eventually get to the last channel then it shows the same page with faders for all six busses and 4 FX sends but in the upper left corner it says return 1 then you can advance through the next three pages and they respectively say return 2, 3 & 4. My question is should I set the routing point for those to the same as I set my channels. PreEQ on 1-6 and Post fader on FX 1-4. This is really the only thing I've encountered in setup that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around. Thanks.
where on earth do our hardware processors go? there are no insert points so how do we get them into the USB transfer for recording and also process stuff from the pc via external hardware?
Lucky me. I found out that in a busy casino, hardwired to the mixer, I still had RF interference. Switched to STP cable next time in, and had no problems. The Cat 5e UTP cable I was using was only 25 feet long. I purchased a 25 foot STP Cat 5e to replace it.
if the first 2 channels are hi z, and you can plug your guitar without a di, can you still plug instruments direct in 3 - 18 channels. thank you. and i subscribed
Drew, I bought a XR18 and a X-Touch Compact, and I can't get them to work together correctly. It seems like nothing is mapped correctly. The first fader moves track 2, and the subsequent faders move subsequent tracks. Changing banks doesn't control the next set of tracks, and the mains fader moves the next track, not the mains in the mixer. Nothing else works. Can you tell me if these units are not compatible or if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks!
Does anyone know if you load the presets into the Xair18 if you need them on your computer anymore? I would like to buy drews presets to help me with my church's xair config but we have 3 different sound teams and Im wondering if you need a copy of the presets file anytime you want to use the xair, or if, once I purchase the presets once, do they get loaded into the xair and I dont need the files anymore. To state my question another way, I have 3 sound teams, does each sound team need their own copy of the presets or can I buy it once and load it into my xair18? thanks!
Great video! Just bought the x18 and love it! I want to put the bass guitar and electronic drum kit through the x18 for live performances. Do I need to use DI boxes?
Always good to keep DI boxes around. When in doubt just put one in between to prevent your mixer damagaes by faulty equipment of others. Especially electric quitar musicians have sometimes a lot of extra equipment all wallpower feeded and sometimes strangly stacked.
drew I am having a challenge sending out from my system back to the x32. how to I solve this?? note the multitrack input is working well but how do I route the multitrack back to x32??
@Drew Brashler, I purchased the preset bundle from your website but I'm unable to load the presets into xair edit. please advise (I have the XR18) thank you.
I also use an external router. Is it possible to hook 2 of these xr18 to a single router and assign them each a different pass code so I have 32 xlr inputs. Also using 2 tablets. then combine the outputs into a external passive crossover. Can anyone answer this.
2 years later, but yes it should work in theory. The XR18s should be able to automatically take a different IP address, and therefore be able to be controlled by 2 tablets on the same Wifi network. By 'passive crossover' I guess you mean another mixer? As crossovers are usually used for splitting a signal for high frequency/low frequency speakers. You could also just put the outputs of one of the XR18 into the inputs of other XR18, but this would reduce your useable channel count. Hope that helps!
Hey Drew i dig how fluent u are in ur explanation ... i have the xr18 and i am trying to get it to work with pro tools via usb ... but it loads drivers and still gives me the yellow triangle with exclamation mark in control panel... could u email me a detailed explananation about installing this beast on windows 7 ultimate 64 bit... do i need hot fixes and a specific configuration ... Hope to hear from u soon ....Kind Regards from Capetown South Africa
When using it as a USB card how is it getting 18 out of there’s only 8 plus headphones (10) physical outputs? Or Is it only possible if using an Ultranet device to gain you 18 physical outputs. Thx
In order to use a DAW on my laptop with the XR 18, do I connect both the cat 5 cable and the USB? Im using Tracktion, and it recognizes the 18 with cat 5, but can't figure out how to connect it with USB
For Drew or anyone who may know, he mentions using Waves Multirack to use external VST effects. Do you have to use one of those "live specific" programs that cost an extra $150+ or would the DAW I already have installed work the same way with the VST plug ins. Would I run into latency issues or anything like that?
Hey man! I believe there is a way to do this in Logic Pro X. However it can produce some latency because of your computers DSP power. Feel free to send us an email at support@zavasound.com so we can figure this out together! Or by going to our website at, zavasound.com, and clicking, "Support." We hope to hear from you soon!
Waves Rack is its own, stand-alone shell program that runs Waves pugins in "live," low-latency mode. Trying to run Waves plugins for a live setting in a VST host like Reaper, etc, will introduce latency issues that could become a huge problem for your sound. The audio from the live mixer will reach the speakers well before the audio from the DAW, and, depending on the effects you're trying to use, this can cause problems like phase-cancellation, comb filtering, or, if the latency is really bad, echoing.
Hey Rojano! Yes there is definetley a way to do this via the "In/Out" page on the X Air Edit software. Please submit a ticket with us by sending an email to support@zavasound.com! Or by going onto our website, zavasound.com, and clicking support. We hope to see you soon!
This is hands down the best explanation of this mixer I have ever heard.
I agree!

Great Video. Great Expert!
Thank you for answering clearly the question of not being able to use it as a stage box! PTL! That’s exactly what I needed to know! However for anyone looking to use it as I am, I have found a solution. I think. We’ll see.

Thanks.
Good stuff, thank you
Great video! Do you know what will be the best way to connect 2 TurboSound IP2000 to X18? Im planning on buying this set up for our church.
Do you need internet access to run your own router with the ethernet cable? TIA
Hi, great video. Can I connect the line 6 helix for live performance
Hi, Drew! Can I record XR18 directly in Ableton Live in Mac/PC?
where on earth do our hardware processors go? there are no insert points so how do we get them into the USB transfer for recording and also process stuff from the pc via external hardware?
Drew, can you use this as a stagebox connected to the X32?
what program is it to record 18 in and out for MAC?
Especially electric quitar musicians have sometimes a lot of extra equipment all wallpower feeded and sometimes strangly stacked.
drew I am having a challenge sending out from my system back to the x32. how to I solve this?? note the multitrack input is working well but how do I route the multitrack back to x32??
dprinceuknow you can’t. This is what he addresses when he says “you can’t use this as a stage box for the X32” they are different systems.
Dude you are super knowledgeable
Cheers Drew. Do you know if you can hook up a midi controller keyboard to the XR18 to play software instruments in your DAW?
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO! WHAT MIC ARE YOU USING?
What about the new Midas MR18?
Is there a preset effects on every channels?
When using it as a USB card how is it getting 18 out of there’s only 8 plus headphones (10) physical outputs? Or Is it only possible if using an Ultranet device to gain you 18 physical outputs.
Thx
Audio is sent by usb 2.0. And gains etc are set via virtual mixer
In order to use a DAW on my laptop with the XR 18, do I connect both the cat 5 cable and the USB? Im using Tracktion, and it recognizes the 18 with cat 5, but can't figure out how to connect it with USB
Can only see this and the compression video on your channel. Was there any more ?? I'm a new XR18 user and just looking for tips
Thanks so much
Hi, what type of Ipad generation that would be compatible for downloading the X air app ??
How do i setup independent subwofer output on xr18???
Say i want LR output just for mid+high speakers
You can use one of the Aux outputs for your subwoofer, if you have any free.
Can I do a live mix at a gig and do a multitrack recording independently of that mix?
Any chance of doing a follow up vid including the X-Touch midi controller?
Would be a good video!
How do you hook up a Tascam 900 series CD recorder to the XR18 to record live sound such as a choir? Please advise.
Can you assign the aux inputs (ch17/18) to the aux outputs?
Hey Rojano! Yes there is definetley a way to do this via the "In/Out" page on the X Air Edit software. Please submit a ticket with us by sending an email to support@zavasound.com! Or by going onto our website, zavasound.com, and clicking support. We hope to see you soon!
This was two years ago did they come out with an upgrade yet
the MR18 is the upgrade
