Amazing collection! I wish I could have my own green house... Love South African succulents, especially Lithops: these plants have such amazing adaptations to survive in such extreme conditions. Thanks for sharing your plant adventures!
What a RAD collection! Truly dreamy. Fantastic video (and LOVING your jacket!). Thanks, Summer. It's been fun catching up on all of your videos, semi-new subscriber. Love what you do.
Thanks Ms. Rayne for your wonderful vlog I love watching your videos I learned a lot of names of my plants which I have in my house but don't know its specific name, I feel owe learning that I have some of the plants considered as "rare"...I love plants hope to see here in the Philippines...
Your field trip edition's video at NSE Tropical has been on my top ASMR Video, I played it repeatedly whenever i need to be relaxed..something i played it when i need a high quality sleep!
Dirgayusa Seriously though, I was just thinking how amazing Maarten's voice is. His explanations are great despite the language barrier as well. Usually, I cringe when hearing my fellow Dutchies speak English :P Can't believe I used to live 10 minutes away from the gardens and never went either. I mean, I lived at the university's campus XD
AWESOME collection and beautiful placement of the cacti. Hats off to you and your video With Love from Guwahati Assam INDIA * I have been watching your videos for a month and I like all your videos as they are very informative and enjoyable. Sorry for your lovely hen . But hope you can have a new one . God bless you and Enjoy your Day
I thought we also called lithops living stones in Dutch (levende steentjes). Vensterplantje translates to little window plant, didn't know this name ☺️ I'm trying to grow them from seed
Nice video and so great you actually went to the netherlands! I'm inspired to visit this botanic garden... Looking forward to the next greenhouses! Really funny to watch you try saying "zuidas" btw :)
Omg, I just went here for the first time this afternoon, during my break (I study at that university)! And now I see this video, what a coincidence :O I didn't have much time because my class was starting again, but I will surely go there again when I have more time :D
I have a desert cactus that has about 20 arms branching out and is about 3 feet tall I’d say and the funny thing is, I got it from cvs 3 years ago when it was in about a 4 inch pot with a “sucker” cactus grafted on the top of it to look like a flower and I actually cut it off because I read online that they don’t live indefinitely with the sucker grafted on since the colorful cactus feeds on the main plant and can’t live by itself and almost as soon as I did that it calloused over and started putting out arms from the main trunk
I have no reason to suspect this other than wild speculation, but is there an ingrained culture of collecting specimens from abroad within the Netherlands, stemming from the Dutch East India Company? Every museum, botanical garden, greenhouse, gallery etc in NL seems to just be brimming with rare and unusual items. I remember even at a street market in Den Haag, this guy with a cart was selling OLD (like super, super, super old) maps and books from various parts of Europe and Asia. I wonder if there is a collection of plants from a voyage from the VOC which has been kept secure for hundreds of years.
hi Summer Rayne, thanks for the video. I'm a new subscriber, and I just want to say I absolutely LOVE your apartment, hopefully I can come close to having many more plants in my apartment as you in the future. Question for you, do you know of any solution I can make to spray on my plants (that of course is plant safe) to keep my cat from chewing them? Thanks
Have you actually tried spraying her with a citrus spray every time you see her chewing them? I offer that up as a suggestion because the six cats I had at home growing up-some would occasionally jump on the table and they HATE getting sprayed, and particularly hate citrus, so if they associate eating something with getting sprayed, it may serve as a deterrent. Unfortunately a citrus spray on the plants wouldn't last long, as citrus smells are pretty volatile, so they'll off-gas into the air quite quickly. Another solution is the ones she finds most interesting, elevating them up in hanging baskets, if that is an option. Otherwise, I offer up others here to comment with their ideas!
hi Naked&Laughing, for sure I don't want to put anything on my plants or cat that would harm them. I just want my cat to stop chewing my beautiful Ophiopogon Nigrescens ( I guess for him it is too much like cat grass?). So I put the Ophiopogon up higher so that he cant get to it, and I would like to repot a shot from it that I can put elsewhere, I think I will spray him with water or (citrus water? not oil) if he tries to chew them. He also chewed on my Spathiphyllum too, which I moved up, I just right now don't have any other spaces or shelves high up away from where he can get to. Thanks.
This collection is amazing! I have seen only four types of cacti and have only 2 types of them in my house and I don't even know their names :D I will Instagram the pictures to know their names.
Just like gardens, even the most spectacular ones, plant collections get created and then a day comes when for a variety of reasons the assemblage is dissolved or destroyed. Fortunately, in this case, this work of great effort and many years has continuing support. ~ Regarding acquisitiveness; l have adopted a viewpoint that enables me to ‘have’ any plant I see. That is, I now look at the world as one giant garden that ‘belongs’ to each and everyone. So while I get particular joy from tending to plants that I actually own outright , I can also greatly enjoy strolling through man made and natural landscapes with a sense that I don’t need to acquire, or long to possess what I see because it exists where and how it is for all to enjoy, including me. In this way the entire world becomes ‘your’ garden, collection and nursery rolled into one. (Or maybe my acquisitiveness is fading with age.)
Hellppp, I have some nostirsum plants, I just sprouted them and they are about 2"-5" tall, but there leafs are getting sticky/rubbery/and very weak. They arnt dry, just dying and I have no idea why.
If you're growing them from seeds, you need to make sure that the overhead light is strong enough and only 1-2" away from the plant (overhead). If it's any further than that, they'll grow tall and spindly.
I feel so knowledgeable watching your amazing videos. Such a sweetheart giving you the tour.
Yes, Maarten was so generous with his time. The volunteers there are absolutely passionate and amazing!
Maarten's voice is ASMR for me.

Another awesome tour Summer! A+ for trying to speak Dutch in the intro! 😁 That is quite a collection of cacti!
I think you'd be the only one giving me an A+ for that pronunciation. Thank you!
nice and good collection.
What a gorgeous place. Enjoyed the video. Funny ending. :)))
Glad you watched all the way to the ending. Always try to throw the funny bits back there :)
Oh wow, love this cactus wonderland... wonder if they're open to public...
you can make arrangements with them on their website, which is in the description. :)
Awesome, thanks :)
Yashashwi Sharma they are! You can walk in for free! Just ask if you can see the cacti and they will let you in the greenhouse!
Great tour. Loved it❤
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Another beautiful video!
glad you enjoyed :)
Wow! That must be quite a chore to water!
I don't envy the man who has to water! Although luckily they are cacti and don't need it as much!

Definitely do so. It's such a gem. Take advantage of it that you're so close.

haha. Maybe in time. I just launched this channel last year, so all good things take time.
It was overwhelming
It's REALLY overwhelming and yet SO organized at the same time. My hat off to the volunteers who are able to maintain all of these!
