@@howtodoit1779 Okay, the problem, the derailleur, the cable, or the shifter? You have to isolate the issue, and fix it. Or take it to a mechanic. I can't diagnose it without working on it.

Im a 13yo girl, and i asked my stepdad to fix my bike because my gears werent shifting correctly. He rode my bike uphill but was still dumb to understand the problem so he denied to atleast listen to what my problems were with the bike. He got annoyed so then i decided to just do it myself because he's just lazy asf i guess.. In the garage and at the end of this video i understood what the problem was and i fixed it with the tools we have in the garage!! thank you so much!!

Finally found a video that addressed my problem, front gear would not shift on to the largest gear. Bought the bike used with this problem. Simple adjustment of the high limiter screw and problem solved. Your the MAN! Thanks for the videos.

AlphaDaddy82 EXACTLY!!! I’ve never in my life touched a bike for any reason other than cycling. With this one single video I repaired my gears and saved myself min $100++ !!! How cool is that!
Im a new and casual bike rider. I just got a 7 speed bike from Walmart and not sure if it was like this at the store or if it was from shoving the bike in my little car, but the chain came off and it wasn't shifting gears. having absolutely NO experience with mechanics of any kind, this video helped me fix the shifting gear problem!!! thank you!!!
This guy is THE BEST instructor teacher mentor whatever you wish to call it when it comes to bikes! All of the videos are so clear and zooms up on the individual parts so that you can easily see the part. Great lighting. And he explains things thoroughly but in easy to understand terms. He doesn't just tell u HOW to fix it but also WHY. WHY it's not working right. WHY it gets assembled in this order etc. Which is a big importance to me. He really breaks it down. I find it so much easier to comprehend how to fix a certain aspect of my bike if I know how it works the mechanics of it, and why it isn't doing as intended.

Letting the derailer come first to its "resting spot" before tightening the cable was just the thing that worked for me. Haven't heard any other online cable people recommend doing that first. Thanks much. Great help!

Great video easily explained, fixed my problem my self. Before I was going to take it to the bike shop and know they would have charged me an arm and a leg to do the job that took me 3 min to do.

This video fixed my issue in 41 seconds flat. Paused, removed an external headlight battery strapped to the crossbar, and problem was solved. (never considered cable restriction could be an issue until watching). Thanks RJ

It is a very straight forward video. Thank you. My gears do move up to the largest and back to the smallest gear. The issue with my bike is always that the chain will not move swiftly BETWEEN the gears. I keep adjusting the shifters from time to time. They work for a short while but within a few days the shifting from one gear to the next becomes problematic again.
After a lot of research on YT to fix my bike's rear derailleur shifting issue I finally found the issue and solution! Couldn't find a YT video on this matter! I explain it below: 1) The most common type of housing has an inner thin wires tube and an outer plastic covering tube. Apparently after a while because of pressure the outer plastic tube jams and the inner tube wires are exposed that can get crushed by pressure on ferrels! This causes a serious metal-metal fraction between the cable and thin wires of housing, worse than any dirt or rust can do! 2) Loosen the shifter cable and release the cable at the derailleur (watch YT guides) and through all housings to free all housing parts. 3) You have to cleanly cut the exposed thin wires of housing to align it with plastic cover tube. Be careful not to block inner empty hole (where the cable passes) by crushing the wires. You need a sharp wire cutter (or a specialized tool from bike shop!) Then clean up both ends of housing and lube a bit. 4) Insert the cable in all housing parts and through the derailleur cable clamp. Since you lost some housing length, to have the same tension on the cable at a particular gear you need to pull the cable out of derailleur cable clamp a bit compared to what it was before. This needs to be fine tuned to have perfect correspondence between shifter and derailleur for all gear range (watch YT guides). Hope it helps someone.

Hello, I'm genuinely curious, what's the name or details of your drop bar brakes and shifters? and how much are they? I'm planning to make my mtb i got from my birthday a few months ago become a dropbar, but I don't know how to change the cables so I'll just switch the cables into new brakes or shifters but yeah i have this problem on my mtb where i cannot shift down to the smallest cog and the biggest front derailleur.

One day I wanted to clean my bike and decided to also tighten all the screws I can see, such a bad idea I did not know what the were for, thanks to this video I was able to readjust all my gears and wires
Your video taught me so much about my mountain bike. I’ve never worked on one before (its a 21 speed) and my front derailleur was stuck on the small cog. I loosened up the tension on the cage so that i could physically move my chain over to the middle cog because there were no tension in my gears while switching up and down. Now i have great tension and they are changing at least a little. I can’t get the front derailleur to switch between cogs... any tips? For now it at least works on one cog, but i would like it to work completely 😂
Feeling proactive, I decided to lightly tighten all of the screws on my new bike. For some reason, my bike would no longer shift gears and I was stumped~ Little did I know, the screws at 5:24 are not supposed to screw in all the way! I can shift gears again after correcting my earlier mistake. Thank you for the video!

My bike wouldn't shift into all of the gears. it would be stuck on the finer shifter side (idk the correct name) in 5th. The left side worked perfect. After watching this video I messed with my bike a little and now it works like a charm. I think a thank you is in order.

This video just helped me out today. I just bought a Trek Verve 1. The front shifter was not shifting off Gear 1. (has 3 gears) I tried the screws didnt help. Pulled manually on cable bingo..it shifted. So I determined the builder didnt pull the cable tight enough. Found allen screw at end of cable. Loosened it and pulled cable tighter with needle nose pliers and tightened it back. Fixed..gears shifting now.

I have shimano sora shifters. The chain moves ok from small to larger cogs, but jumps directly to the smallest cog when I down shift. Derailleur, chain and cassette are brand new. My mechanic says that the right shifter is the culprit since it's badly corroded and needs replacement. But that's expensive and not worth it. Any alternative on how to fix this issue?

New subscriber here. I have a Canyon Endurace AL 6.0 disc, nearly brand new. It's got Shimano Tiagra R4720 brake levers and a Shimano Tiagra 4700 front derailleur. I've only put about 400 miles on it so far. I had some chain rub so I messed around with the limiting screws on the front derailleur, and adjusted the cage a bit. The chain rub problem is solved but now I can't get the cage to move to the right so as to shift the chain to the larger front sprocket. I tried adjusting the cable on the left shifter, and loosed and tightened the left shift cable at the front derailleur, all to no avail. It won't shift to the larger front sprocket no matter what I do. What bugs me most is that this problem didn't exist until I started messing around with the front derailleur. Any thoughts about how to fix this?
Yes i do agree and i change the cables when i have bike in for servicing but this trike is new 6 weeks old, one is not jumping to conclusions that a cable need replacing. But we got there and all sorted
RJ I am having a problem with a 7 speed trike, tightening the cable is is allowing to get on to the big gear 7 but i dont seem to be able to get higher than gear 3 i have adjusted the index screw but making no difference. all quite new equipment. the shifter is working ok. Loosening the cable lets me get down the gears.
I replaced my cable (Bell 4-cable box from Walmart) and rear derailleur works fine now. Also, the rear clamp had a groove that would not clamp the cable but slid on it. Had to wrap the cable around the clamp, works fine now.
Hi RJ, my gravel/commuter is having some rear shifting problems. I put a new derailler on a few months ago and changed the cable, and oiled the levers. I cracked the old rear derailler. Recently the problem i am having is it shifts up to the big rear cogs fine but going down to the smaller cogs it won't shift, then i click a second time and it double shifts- skipping over and shifting to the proper gear 2 down. So what i do is i shift to the smaller cog twice and then shift back up to the bigger cog, since shifting up has no problem. Weird. I am going to degrease the spring and insides of the rear derailler right now then oil it. I also just measured my chain, over 2400 miles on it, and it is now stretched, so i will replace that too. We'll know by tomorrow when i have everything put back together, cleaned and greased. What do you think? Have you seen this symptom before? I will also check the straightness of the rear arm.
@@RJTheBikeGuy ok, after bike to work week, 220km ending yesterday, i needed to change my front brake pads, cleaned the front pistons, cassette and chain rings. Changed the chain, oiled, cleaned. And i also wd40'd the rear derailler and cleaned it with a pick and rag. Oiled all the pins. Moves very nice. Quick spin and it shifts real nice, but one gear might still skip. I will take it 5 miles tonight and then 100km to work next week, so we'll see.

Well done video. My Shimano Revoshift 7 speed was making a slight noise when pedalling except in the very high gears and very low gears. I decided to adjust it according to the manual provide with the bike (huffy Sienna).Well, I made things worse. I went from a bit of noise with a full range of gears, down to 1 gear. This video filled in some blanks in the manual by explaining how the high and low adjustment screws function on the rear derailleur. Thanks.

Im a 13yo girl, and i asked my stepdad to fix my bike because my gears werent shifting correctly. He rode my bike uphill but was still dumb to understand the problem so he denied to atleast listen to what my problems were with the bike. He got annoyed so then i decided to just do it myself because he's just lazy asf i guess.. In the garage and at the end of this video i understood what the problem was and i fixed it with the tools we have in the garage!! thank you so much!!

Finally found a video that addressed my problem, front gear would not shift on to the largest gear. Bought the bike used with this problem. Simple adjustment of the high limiter screw and problem solved. Your the MAN! Thanks for the videos.

Im a new and casual bike rider. I just got a 7 speed bike from Walmart and not sure if it was like this at the store or if it was from shoving the bike in my little car, but the chain came off and it wasn't shifting gears. having absolutely NO experience with mechanics of any kind, this video helped me fix the shifting gear problem!!! thank you!!!
This guy is THE BEST instructor teacher mentor whatever you wish to call it when it comes to bikes! All of the videos are so clear and zooms up on the individual parts so that you can easily see the part. Great lighting. And he explains things thoroughly but in easy to understand terms. He doesn't just tell u HOW to fix it but also WHY. WHY it's not working right. WHY it gets assembled in this order etc. Which is a big importance to me. He really breaks it down. I find it so much easier to comprehend how to fix a certain aspect of my bike if I know how it works the mechanics of it, and why it isn't doing as intended.

Letting the derailer come first to its "resting spot" before tightening the cable was just the thing that worked for me. Haven't heard any other online cable people recommend doing that first. Thanks much. Great help!

Great video easily explained, fixed my problem my self. Before I was going to take it to the bike shop and know they would have charged me an arm and a leg to do the job that took me 3 min to do.
Find a new bike shop mine adjusted my brake pads fixed my derailer and taught me how to do it all again I the future for 15$

This video fixed my issue in 41 seconds flat. Paused, removed an external headlight battery strapped to the crossbar, and problem was solved. (never considered cable restriction could be an issue until watching). Thanks RJ

Glad this is the first video UA-cam suggested cause you help me define my problem where left shift handle wasnt responding due to it needing lubrication. Had me worried!
It is a very straight forward video. Thank you. My gears do move up to the largest and back to the smallest gear. The issue with my bike is always that the chain will not move swiftly BETWEEN the gears. I keep adjusting the shifters from time to time. They work for a short while but within a few days the shifting from one gear to the next becomes problematic again.
After a lot of research on YT to fix my bike's rear derailleur shifting issue I finally found the issue and solution! Couldn't find a YT video on this matter! I explain it below:
1) The most common type of housing has an inner thin wires tube and an outer plastic covering tube. Apparently after a while because of pressure the outer plastic tube jams and the inner tube wires are exposed that can get crushed by pressure on ferrels! This causes a serious metal-metal fraction between the cable and thin wires of housing, worse than any dirt or rust can do!
2) Loosen the shifter cable and release the cable at the derailleur (watch YT guides) and through all housings to free all housing parts.
3) You have to cleanly cut the exposed thin wires of housing to align it with plastic cover tube. Be careful not to block inner empty hole (where the cable passes) by crushing the wires. You need a sharp wire cutter (or a specialized tool from bike shop!) Then clean up both ends of housing and lube a bit.
4) Insert the cable in all housing parts and through the derailleur cable clamp. Since you lost some housing length, to have the same tension on the cable at a particular gear you need to pull the cable out of derailleur cable clamp a bit compared to what it was before. This needs to be fine tuned to have perfect correspondence between shifter and derailleur for all gear range (watch YT guides).

Hello, I'm genuinely curious, what's the name or details of your drop bar brakes and shifters? and how much are they? I'm planning to make my mtb i got from my birthday a few months ago become a dropbar, but I don't know how to change the cables so I'll just switch the cables into new brakes or shifters but yeah i have this problem on my mtb where i cannot shift down to the smallest cog and the biggest front derailleur.

Your video taught me so much about my mountain bike. I’ve never worked on one before (its a 21 speed) and my front derailleur was stuck on the small cog. I loosened up the tension on the cage so that i could physically move my chain over to the middle cog because there were no tension in my gears while switching up and down. Now i have great tension and they are changing at least a little. I can’t get the front derailleur to switch between cogs... any tips? For now it at least works on one cog, but i would like it to work completely 😂

Feeling proactive, I decided to lightly tighten all of the screws on my new bike.
For some reason, my bike would no longer shift gears and I was stumped~
Little did I know, the screws at 5:24 are not supposed to screw in all the way!

My bike wouldn't shift into all of the gears. it would be stuck on the finer shifter side (idk the correct name) in 5th. The left side worked perfect. After watching this video I messed with my bike a little and now it works like a charm. I think a thank you is in order.

This video just helped me out today. I just bought a Trek Verve 1. The front shifter was not shifting off Gear 1. (has 3 gears) I tried the screws didnt help. Pulled manually on cable bingo..it shifted. So I determined the builder didnt pull the cable tight enough. Found allen screw at end of cable. Loosened it and pulled cable tighter with needle nose pliers and tightened it back. Fixed..gears shifting now.

I have shimano sora shifters. The chain moves ok from small to larger cogs, but jumps directly to the smallest cog when I down shift. Derailleur, chain and cassette are brand new. My mechanic says that the right shifter is the culprit since it's badly corroded and needs replacement. But that's expensive and not worth it. Any alternative on how to fix this issue?

New subscriber here. I have a Canyon Endurace AL 6.0 disc, nearly brand new. It's got Shimano Tiagra R4720 brake levers and a Shimano Tiagra 4700 front derailleur. I've only put about 400 miles on it so far. I had some chain rub so I messed around with the limiting screws on the front derailleur, and adjusted the cage a bit. The chain rub problem is solved but now I can't get the cage to move to the right so as to shift the chain to the larger front sprocket. I tried adjusting the cable on the left shifter, and loosed and tightened the left shift cable at the front derailleur, all to no avail. It won't shift to the larger front sprocket no matter what I do. What bugs me most is that this problem didn't exist until I started messing around with the front derailleur. Any thoughts about how to fix this?
Yes i do agree and i change the cables when i have bike in for servicing but this trike is new 6 weeks old, one is not jumping to conclusions that a cable need replacing. But we got there and all sorted

RJ I am having a problem with a 7 speed trike, tightening the cable is is allowing to get on to the big gear 7 but i dont seem to be able to get higher than gear 3 i have adjusted the index screw but making no difference. all quite new equipment. the shifter is working ok.
Loosening the cable lets me get down the gears.
Go through the video and isolate the issue. I can't tell you the cause without working on the bike.
I replaced my cable (Bell 4-cable box from Walmart) and rear derailleur works fine now. Also, the rear clamp had a groove that would not clamp the cable but slid on it. Had to wrap the cable around the clamp, works fine now.

Hi RJ, my gravel/commuter is having some rear shifting problems. I put a new derailler on a few months ago and changed the cable, and oiled the levers. I cracked the old rear derailler. Recently the problem i am having is it shifts up to the big rear cogs fine but going down to the smaller cogs it won't shift, then i click a second time and it double shifts- skipping over and shifting to the proper gear 2 down. So what i do is i shift to the smaller cog twice and then shift back up to the bigger cog, since shifting up has no problem. Weird. I am going to degrease the spring and insides of the rear derailler right now then oil it. I also just measured my chain, over 2400 miles on it, and it is now stretched, so i will replace that too. We'll know by tomorrow when i have everything put back together, cleaned and greased. What do you think? Have you seen this symptom before? I will also check the straightness of the rear arm.
Yeah, and you gotta work the problem. It can be any one of the things in the video, or a combination of them.
@@RJTheBikeGuy ok, after bike to work week, 220km ending yesterday, i needed to change my front brake pads, cleaned the front pistons, cassette and chain rings. Changed the chain, oiled, cleaned. And i also wd40'd the rear derailler and cleaned it with a pick and rag. Oiled all the pins. Moves very nice. Quick spin and it shifts real nice, but one gear might still skip. I will take it 5 miles tonight and then 100km to work next week, so we'll see.

Three days later Jesus was resurrected from death and that showed that he didn’t deserve to die because he was perfect but he taked the punishment of our sin so that we could live with God.
So turn to God and believe in him through Jesus it is the only way to eternal life with God. God also transformed me because I did disgusting things, but when I received Jesus, God began to do his work in me and thanks to the Lord I am saved. Please do not ignore this because I do not want you my sister or brother to be lost. but through Jesus there is not a single way to God for God is just he can not just forget your sin as long as nothing has paid for your sin and Jesus did. think about this in this way: you’re in a court you are convicted of a punishment the judge will not remove your punishment for the good stuff you have done no he will judge you for the bad ones. but if someone pays your penalty then you are free to go. God did not want you to be lost so He sent Jesus for your sins. It was therefore Jesus said it’s finished before he died. It means that he had taked the punishment of sin instead of you and me. So please Seek God through Christ for Jesus is only way. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life nobody comes to the father except through me. So please turn to Jesus and get salvation before you die. You don’t know when you gone die it could be tomorrow or today. Every day 150 thousand people due and they didn’t know that. So you could be one of them tomorrow. Seek you salvation in Christ.

Well done video. My Shimano Revoshift 7 speed was making a slight noise when pedalling except in the very high gears and very low gears. I decided to adjust it according to the manual provide with the bike (huffy Sienna).Well, I made things worse. I went from a bit of noise with a full range of gears, down to 1 gear. This video filled in some blanks in the manual by explaining how the high and low adjustment screws function on the rear derailleur. Thanks.

Replace the cable/housing and adjust properly.
