I really think you lack research on the topic here. Paganism exists with fundamentally different tenets than Christianity.

Turns out when you don’t violently enforce Christianity onto people some of them go back to what they were doing before that. Monotheistic religions have only ever existed in an environment where the state picks the religion and enforced it. People naturally don’t all have one major religion like Christianity or Islam. It’s been a deviation brought on by empires trying to unite the people they conquered under one god instead of their native and local gods.

@beeswillinherittheearth5084 - Christianity has NEVER been as you state "violently enforced" -
Roman Catholicism enforced conversations - what a travesty - Roman Catholicism is not
Christianity - Christianity is not a religion - it is a fact based faith in the Person and
work of Jesus Christ - and the word of God in the true manuscripts ( The Received Text)
No religion - it is a reconciled relationship with our Creator through His provision.

This is historically false. Christianity was not "violently enforced" in Europe. Europe became Christian in two phases:
      1. Inside the Roman Empire, when it was ILLEGAL! So how could you say it was enforced, when in fact it was the opposite, they were persecuted! Yet they still became the majority, while it was illegal to be a Christian!
      2. The rest of Europe, after the Fall of the Roman Empire: when the pagan barbarians were winning battle after battle against the crumbling and collapsing Roman empire, how could the Romans force those barbarians to convert to Christianity? Maybe you should stop and think a little, if you imagine that early Medieval Europe was "forced" to convert to Christianity. Think about it again: how could the losers of a war, a collapsing empire, "force" the victors into converting to their religion?

@@praevasc4299 Christianity was not the dominant religion in Rome before Emperor Constantine made it the state religion. It became the majority after the Emperor forced it onto the citizens.
Between Constantine’s conversion to Christianity and the invasion of the “pagan barbarians” was 200+ years. If you read anything about European history it’s full of kings, tiny dictators, forcing their people to convert en mass. Right up till the enlightenment they did this. @@beeswillinherittheearth5084 No, it's you who is being dishonest. Christianity did not appear from a vacuum, and except a few rare exceptions, it was not forced from top to bottom. I know it's alluring to think of Christianity as something being made up by the ruling class to control the population, but this is absurd. Why would they make up a religion which teaches that all humans are equal in front of God, and the last will become the first? In fact the religions before Christianity were designed by the ruling class, where your status in this life affected your position in the afterlife and you'll be serving your earthly lords in the afterlife.
Christianity, as opposed to other religions in that place and time, was the religion of the oppressed, the religion of the commoners. When rulers adapted Christianity it was because a substantial portion of the population was already Christian.

Paganism is way more nuanced then you know. Just simply labeling it all as demonic shows how much you don’t know. You are right in saying we as humans are inherently spiritual beings seeking truth. Just because it’s not your belief doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I would consider myself pagan and think Jesus is a good example for anyone to live by, but so is Buddha, so is Krishna…. Etc. You can find truth in all beliefs. All one can do is be a good person, find truth in your own way, and ONLY the creator can judge what all they have created. Many blessings friend!

An interesting view. You say the powers that pagans appeal to are demonic, but of course most pagans don't see it that way. Wiccans for instance see themselves as worshiping or working with the God and Goddess, and followers of Asatru or Norse paganism see themselves worshiping the ancient Germanic gods. From the way you described things it sounds like you're saying the worship of any god other than the Abrahamic and Christian god is demonic, which would then include other religions like Shinto and Hinduism.

Paganisms are worships of fallen Angels who deceive people into thinking they are gods. Demons are fallen Angels, Demons aren't evil by design ( they weren't created to do evil ) but they need humans to sins for them to gain power so the evil they create is simply a byproduct of them wanting their powers back so they can go back to heaven. The thing is they CHOSE to rebel against God in heaven and to wage war against him in this world too. So we're just collateral damage in a battle between entities beyond our understanding, what we as humans have to choose is which side do we think is gonna win, now one side is lying to win and the other is telling the truth to win. which one is which seems clear to me.

The rise in Paganism is a right-wing reaction to modernism and mass immigration. Many Modern European people have this visceral reaction to the hollow and unfulfilling nature of modernity, so they are turning to spirituality. Christianity is a universalist religion and wants to make the whole world Christian, it is also a foreign religion from outside our ancestral homeland (Europe). Pagan holidays are celebrated across where I live in England, things like mayday. There are local traditions that have carried on since before the arrival of Christianity. This video is talking about this topic from a Christian perspective of a black and white world view that completely misses the point of these modern movements. As a polytheist and a Norse Heathen myself, this idea that there is ONE way for humans to live, that we must be worshipers of a god and that we must spread our religion is false. Two distinct things can be true at the same time. We can live secularly, while also individually honoring the gods, and those do not need to contradict. Christians always talk about what is or isn't natural, when their religion is anything but natural itself. Paganism is growing because the gods are reaching out to people again, individually, and are seeking RECIPROCITY!!! Not because the atheists' are just so miserable not being shackled to a god. Atheists can live happy and healthy lives, with fulfillment and joy just like any religious person can. Take it from a believer, you don't need the gods to be happy... nor do they need YOU for that matter.

NT Wright raised a similar point about secularism emerging from the Enlightenment (so-called- my editorial not his) period. He points to it as the time in which western thinkers, mainly responding to things like the Lisbon earthquake on All Saints Day (I forget the year) and radical French thinkers who were attacking the corrupt Roman church in France but threw the baby out with the bathwater. He argues that the West has tried to say that this period is the turning point in history for the world. This therefore is a usurpation of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ Jesus and the resulting tide of "secularism" filtered through Christian values but lacking any rumor of God in the public space.
Would it be safe to say that you and he agree in this regard?

I think the Hindus have it figured out. Like white light being scattered through a prism, all the colours are parts of the original, and all the colours together create the white light.
In this analogy, Jesus would thus be the prism, or the ego in a sense. A healthy, purified ego can experience the totality.
In my case, I'm so damaged that all the colours are dimmed, unable to be brought into alignment. I feel dead inside, and I yearn for what I've lost. Thus my pursuit of Paganism is my attempt to connect with the raw, primal elements of my consciousness.

@@axderka Saint Augustine flat out admitted to adding Platonism. If you are referring to the burning bush and that “I am” bit that’s still appropriating concepts from neo platonism and Greek thought and re interpreting the OT. The original has the name of god and it seems as though the “I am that I am” line is a pun in Hebrew about god’s name. But it’s all lost when it gets translated and then people filled in the blanks with Platonism. Even the translation of the Septuagint was done through a Greek lens so it sort of taints the original meaning. This sort of reinterpretation was done constantly with the OT depending on what empire was in power at the time. When Persia ruled that area you get all these concepts from Zoroastrianism showing up in Hebrew Scriptures. That’s where you get, new heaven, new earth, the devil, the final judgment and the resurrection. Then the more Greek interpretation of an immortal soul and heaven and hell being reward or punishment of the dead. Even if you go back you can find parallels with Mesopotamian and Egyptian religion, that’s where you get Noah and circumcision. Even YHWH is the name of a specific god in the Canaanite pantheon. While it would be nice to have temples, having them be properly run and used would need a lot more work than most people are willing or able to commit. Especially with the fact that in some traditions like in Hellenic Polytheism the average person wasn't even supposed to enter the actual temple. They were restricted to the courtyard where worship by the common people would happen outside during festivals. Only the priests could enter. Shrines on the other hand are far more accessible and far easier to maintain. If we built a lot of those then that might actually get something going. But of course it all depends on the people. Reach out to your fellow Polytheists (regardless of tradition) and worship alongside them. Encourage each other to grow in faith and virtue. Way too many of us are introverts. Paganism is earthy. It doesn't condemn earthly life but embraces it. Christianity teaches that the world is a dirty and wicked place and should be avoided. Christianity is negative. Paganism is optimistic. Some people also see Christianity as too cerebral, bland, and other-worldly. Judaism was much more earthy. The three festivals were tied to the harvest (sowing, firstfruits, harvest) with an added spiritual significance. Christianity is not tied to any earthly thing and hence it needs to condemn the world.

Christianity came from judaism under the rule of jesus, he was sometimes considered by some people as a rabbi and he attended to synagogues in judea, all the first christians that jesus interacted were all jews.
With this in mind when the first setlers to the roman empire tried to christianize europe the emperor himself embraced christianity without any act of war or violence they accepted this new religion and most europeans incorporated their pagan traditions into Christianity and now we call these traditions "christians traditions" but in reality they were pagan.
The christian faith in antiquity was highly wielded as a political tool for empire interests than a religion
In antiquity Paganism was never been executed as an organized religion and pagans didnt called themselves "pagans" by those societies themselves, they just used their metaphysical interpetation as an abstract way of life that that they believe this have them "power" and that in the earth there is always a constant war by the gods because all of them are keeping us alive in this moment, fire, wind, water, ice, thunder, earth, grass, rock etc. in paganism we humans we are the center of everything in the exact middle of the universe and all the deities are in the great beyond unreachable by humans. Theres no eternal heaven, and theres no eternal hell in paganism life was seen as a cycle and continuity pagans before christianity didnt feared on "whats going to happend after death" more likely the fear is about the process of dying and not on whats coming next, dearh was an honor to serve the existence to your relatives and the pagan temples was all about to preserve those who died and they mostly worshipped their ancestors to awaken their consciousness of them but inside of your head because is often believed that we are who carry the same brain with generations.

The rise of paganism is sadly very simple: it allows people to have their cake and eat it too. It is a worldview that promotes acceptance and normalization of the fallen world, and fallen human nature. Thus, a pagan can experience a facsimile of having the spiritual hole in their soul filled via supernatural beliefs, rituals and aesthetics, while on a fundamental heart and conduct level, not having to change one bit. All the warm fuzzies of spirituality and religion, without the dogma and commitment.
A lot of this comes from the pluralistic and relativistic nature inherent to neo-paganism due to it's lack of legitimate authority figures to codify and define the modern reconstruction of these religious systems. With some exceptions, paganism is mostly individuals and small groups cobbling together a patchwork of beliefs based on mythology, archeology, real pagan worldviews mixed with modern worldviews that practitioners take for granted, as well as a heaping helping of subjective unverifiable personal gnosis (in other words, their charismatic/enthusiastic experiences.)
A great example of this is demonstrated when you ask five neo-pagans the precise nature of their "gods": you'll get five completely different answers. Whether it be literal "gods", personifications of natural forces and concepts, Jungian archetypes, or deified ancestors.
Speaking from personal experience as a former neo-pagan who repented and returned to Christ.

Paganism =/= immoral hedonism, armchair philosophers often make that mistake. Much of if not most Christian arguments for truth and morality were directly subsumed from Pagan philosophers. In particular, Hindu schools of moral asceticism predate even Judaism by millenia.
No, rather the embrace of non-JC theology and philosophy in the West is due to the failings of contemporary Christianity in preserving and disseminating the process of theosis, in favor of propitiatory atonement theology which is logically and morally bankrupt.

@Macross DYRL With all due respect, your comment says rise of paganism, which now you move the goalposts to call it neopaganism (presumably what you really mean is the revival of shamanic or polytheistic folk religious practices by peoples with socially liberal views). But let me remind you that pagan is a Latin term meaning 'of the country or rural' coined as a insult by early Christendom for any non-christian philosophies or religions, and the Greek teachers were in serious question even up into the Middle Ages, so much so Augustine and Aquinas (among others) along the way would rewrite philosophical proofs within Christian theological terms (talk about having your cake and eating it too)
Anyway the point is you paint with a wide brush using low IQ arguments that assert man as inherently depraved and neopaganism as an empty cobbling of ideas but only reflect your lack of grasp on the subject matter, as the terms chosen don't fit your assertions and secondly even "neopaganism" still covers the full of the political and moral spectrum (ie there exist morally conservative neopagans)
So really what you mean to say is that liberal people bad and however they express that liberal ideology bad because inherently morally bad. Whereas you, you! are just so wonderful because of all the self-restraint and knowing the right way you can just look down on them and feel morally superior.
Which, as a conservative Catholic philosopher, I find sad and precisely telling why people turned away from the Church as it lost its transcendence to wrestle about over the material. People aren't finding metaphysics in the church so they go elsewhere. All metaphysics derive from the concept of the Absolute Truth, which is what the Greeks did and later co-opted by Aquinas et al, then discarded outside of seminaries, and even then it's no longer the real core anymore.

I think Zahl's book "Seculousity" makes a great argument for the rise of secular paganism absent of traditional pagan trappings of temple/priest/deity with proxies taking the place of those trappings in a duplicitous way. I would argue that secular paganism via this path is more dangerous to society than traditional paganism because it collapses the wall between the numinous nature of worship and the reality of living in a physical world in which items in the physical world have real value mixed with religious value. Take Neil Tyson Degrasse's accidental Twitter slip where he announced that Science is truth and got taken to task for mixing a tool that helps determine facts (science) with absolute truth (faith). What are the folks fighting against masks and vaccines really responding to? Fear? Maybe some. Concern about governmental overreach? Some. But I think many are simply reacting instinctually as Christians against the way that science has been treated as objective truth...ie religion. I say this as a person with both a vaccine and a booster. But, I had to disentangle the faith of the messengers with the physical object of the vaccine. We're back to sacrificed meat, thus Secular Paganism.

No... we all are aware of the technology behind this and that it was never approved because too many animals died during testing. And of the risks of heart damage, and that it's not such a good idea to put things inside one's body with no long term safety data, and that there are concerns about it causing greater susceptibility to the thing it tries to protect against, and that big pharma is concerned about its profits and not about anyone's health and safety. And that there's 100 years of studies saying cloth doesn't stop viruses, and that metastudies also show they do nothing, and that all the current medical "experts" were saying even in 2019 that masks don't stop spread, and that it's not good to restrict people's oxygen, and that children need to see faces in order to properly develop social and linguistic skills, and that maybe dehumanising everybody by erasing our faces isn't good for society and mental health, and that the issue became a mechanism of political control and tribalism, and that a Christian shouldn't wear a lie on his face and promote the cult behind such. Many more of us are aware of personal bodily autonomy and the detrimental effect of giving the government the right to overwrite a person's ownership of his own body.
Not so reactionary as your ill-thought little analysis portrays, is it? So don't place yourself on the pedestal of virtue and clairvoyance here for being the only one to see past the messengers, because you completely bought what they sold. This is in no way analogous to meat sacrificed to idols.

Religious claims have to deal with magical ones by definition wanting to promote a idea that is not a magical one does not make it religious or magic. A valid reason to pursue truth is not wanting to live a life where you are tricked into believing a false claim on no good evidence thereby when Atheists want to push truth it is not the same as religion.
    *Scientism doesn't work*
Millions of people seem to deal with it fine and again science is not a religion, religion has magical claims on God, the afterlife and all sorts of claims relating to the supernatural and even an obsession does not grant it religious status. You know religion has a bad reputation thereby shove it onto those who don't share your ideas (accusing everyone else of being religious).
*When the Christian foundation falls people jump to Paganism*
Paganism is actually the original foundation of the west you silly goose, now i don't believe in Pagan claims either but the fact is the ancient society of Rome, Greece Aztec, Maryan and all of Europe alongside the Native Americans all had Paganism as their foundation. The Christian religion was forced onto all Europeans by threat of torture and death who then centuries after being forced decided to force it onto everyone else.
    *Christianity or Paganism*
Id go to the one that is most accurate claim wise but again as for the appeal Paganism wins in that regard as it was the faith of my ancestors that they actually developed. It was not some cult that developed out of Judaism in Palestine but rather was created in Europe and Latin America (as for all my ancestry as i am mixed).
    *It gives people power*
You mean how pastors become large mega church pastors and cardinals become popes and people fight for leadership and money all throughout Christianity? It is false that only the Pagans try to get power.
    *Till Jesus returns*
Good luck as that ain't gonna happen, Jesus was a false messiah, he predicted he would return in the lifetime of his followers yet bailed on that promise (1900 years overdo) so he ain't coming back. Besides Pagans could argue that the return of Paganism is the natural order and that people are finally returning to the true faith after 1700 years of being tricked by Christians

I now understand Christianity to be a world religion for everyone but at the time it felt as it was more of a middle eastern or even Southern European religion where as I could find identity in being a Northern European descended Norse Pagan and worshiping the same gods my ancestors did. Another reason it was appealing was due to the demasculinization and pacification culture of the West and Protestant Christianity, where as I felt like I could truly embrace my masculinity and competitive drive in Norse Paganism but I had to always “turn the other cheek” or love my frustrating neighbor in Christianity.

You sought paganism with the wrong motivation in your heart. First of all, true paganism honors the divine feminine as much as the divine masculine. The modern reconstruction of Norse paganism is heavily biased towards patriarchal values and it usually casts aside the female deities, just like abrahamic religions did. True paganism has space for healthy masculinity (unlike abrahamic religions), but it goes hand in hand with accepting and honoring the divine feminine. Because all of us are made of both energies and focusing on one more than the other never ends well.

Most of them are into it just for the cool aesthetic, not any actual deep spirituality or the religious teachings.
Majority of religious rituals exist as allegories conveying occult truths, moral teachings and truths about the workings of the world. You need to investigate into those, consider how relevant they are nowadays and how you can refashion them to suit the modern times while still fulfilling the need for spirituality.
A lot of the pagan ones were very focused on the circle of nature stuff, the passing of seasons and especially their relation to agriculture. The holidays basically signified key times during the year: beginning of harvest, leading the cattle out of the fields for the first time in year etc. Those were also symbolically connected to the circle of life, or to literal interpretations of the long dead mythologies.
But nowadays majority of society has nothing do to with agriculture and usually the seasons hardly affect their life and work any more, meaning that for most modern pagans those rituals are just cool social exercises, their meaning pointless, or the metaphorical truths of their lessons defunct if realized at all. This however doesn't mean you can't repurpose them, as circle of nature is still a very actual symbol that lots of folks even subconsciously resonate with, for example by being more active and happy during spring. Cycles and connection to nature are a part of who we are, regardless of technology and a "modernised" paganism could likely help people in re-establishing this bond and bringing some order into their life. For example, I remember some pagan artist's post on 4chan who described how he uses the pagan circle of life and holidays as a basis for his creative work. For example the spring equinox (symbolising birth, beginning of new life etc.) was when he began working on new projects, while the winter solstice (death, reflection, end of cycle) was when he recapped and reviewed the work he did in the ending year.
