- Even though Greece is a predominately Christian Orthodox country, there are some people in this country who still believe in the 12 Gods of mount Olympus, deriving from Greek Mythology. According to unofficial sources they amount to a couple of hundreds and present themselves as members of the unofficial so-called "Greek Religion". This is a mixture of beliefs that combine paganism, the idea of spiritual connection with nature and a kind of fixation to the Ancient Greek ideals. Over the past decades they have founded various different groups, the oldest and most popular among them being the "Greek Naionals High Commissioned Council (GNHCC) - Υπατο Συμβούλιο Ελλήνων Εθνικών," founded 30 years ago.

@@delegsgsg6353 no probably 90% or more of the Greek population haven't met a person who believes in the Hellenic Pantheon, but as an ordinary Greek person myself, i would just be curious about their life. All Greeks are extremely proud of our history and culture and i think most of us would be kinda happy if we meet a person like them.

Apparently because the Greek Orthodox Church also rules the government, if you aren’t Christian you’re seen as an outsider in Greece. These people continuing centuries old traditions are putting themselves in a tough spot in society but it’s so beautiful

So did I understand this correctly: If you convert to Islam your faith is recognized by the greek government but if you believe in your cultural roots - the greek gods - your religion won't be classified as a religion....?
Islam also has a cultural root. After Byzantine fell, the Ottoman Empire took over Greece and the Balkans.

Yep. Greece has cut the roots (except for those people) from the old religion. Islam had nothing to do with Greece after the Turks got kicked out of the peninsula and they were more or less eradicated during the Greek revolution in the 1820's. Islam is now recognized because of a small Islamic minority that still lives close to the border with Turkey and that stayed in Greece due to a convention (after its last expansion and dispute with the Turkish). Finally, these days there are lots of muslin immigrants in Greece.
Well Islam is a much larger and more recognized religion. Also the Greek Pantheon has very few followers.

I'm Greek and I respect these people. Personally, I'm Orthodox Christian but I totally get these people. Sadly, many Greeks consider them 'trash'.

The Norse would call it Orlog, the Greeks called it cosmos, and the Hindus call it the atman: the god that is non-existent, and alive at the same time that everything fits into to make up the universe; it's kind of a Schrödinger's Cat paradox on a universe-wide scale.

Although Christianity is not a oppression religion that's brought to Roman empire by jews. Actually Christianity is invented by a Romans Greek name Paul. Jesus doesn't want a religion..it's the Greek Romans who created it. Christianity means followers of the Jewish messiah. Christ in Greek means in English is Messiah/to.follow the Jewish messiah.... yeah it's hard to do that, I'm Hellenistic but I also know that the Parthenon now it's estremely fragile (thx christianity and islam, again).

The Bible has nothing to do with Indo-Europeans inherently. Traditional Greek gods are descendants of Proto Indo-European gods and religion.

Even though I am an atheist, and very much an anti-theist this brought a tear to my eye. I’ve always been extremely fascinated by Hellenism/Olympianism. The Gods and culture of Ancient Greece are so unbelievably interesting and intricate. The ceremony was beautiful; the chanting, the white dresses and the offerings. I’ve been studying the societies of Ancient Sparta & Athens and have been loving every bit of it.
I think this documentary mainly should’ve been focusing on their practices and beliefs rather than the politics about it. I also found the reporter to be quite disrespectful, especially towards the end.

As a Hindu I support them. The Greeks, The Romans, The Egyptians & lastly the Norse were some of my favorite faiths/ Religions growing up! We heard so many great tales about the ancient gods/Goddesses. Such beautiful culture & traditions. Not to mention there are a lot of similarities between our gods as well. I am Serbian, of distant Greek origin, and all since late high school, I have considered myself very close to the beliefs of the Greek Pantheon. When I lived in Canada, I was filling a form, a questionnaire. I had to circle the religion I belonged to. There were many world's religions listed. And there was the option "Other" with an empty line. I circled "Other" and wrote "Greek Pantheon" in the empty line. That was in 2003. I am so happy to see that this now really exists. I am so proud of my Greek origin.

I'm an atheist, but who am I to say that these people are morally wrong? That one woman had so much faith she was crying about her religions hymns being brought back once more. The comments are all positive, but why are there so many Christians arguing in the replies. They act as if people worshipping their own religion is threatening them on an existential level.

To a lot of Christians it IS an existential threat. Christianity tends to view things as a zero sum game. Either everyone worships their God, or they're "losing".
I think it's because the theological foundation of Christianity is built around exclusivity of their god, that any other divine being is an imposter and is misleading people to damnation.
The irony is that, in my opinion, what a lot of what Christians believe in, like an afterlife, Heaven, where there is beauty and peace with those who came before, justice, mercy, honor, family, have roots in pre-Christian theology and philosophy of the soul. According to Plato's Republic, many ancient greeks like Socrates believed in a "deist" sort of religion where there was a mysterious force/god that was not like a person, but could be divided into several Gods. It was a syncretic religion very similar to hinduism.

Epibørk I guess I'm confused. My family swears by what they were taught which is to never question things. I question everything though. I look at all the other cultures in my community and city and I feel like when you list them all, they all have this opinion that my religion is better than yours blah blah. You are Greek, but are your born in Greece? Because I believe you are born in the US and the Greeks in the US are unnecessarily traditional and have confused many things. For example, if you know any Greek at all, you and your family would know very well that the religion never said "believe and don't question anything", it says "believe or not (believe), question everything", the difference is that it cannot be translated very well in english and there's a comma in the sentence that changes the whole meaning (πιστευε και μη, ερευνα VS πιστευε και μη ερευνα). Only old and uneducated people still believe that they shouldn't question everything. I have no reason to defend religion, i am an atheist myself, born in Greece in a time that the society is changing everyday, but I hate it when atheists complain everyday as if they are born in a theocracy. In my honest opinion, these are the people that would rather complain to strangers, instead of doing something to change the society one step at a time, starting from their family. For me, you are part of the problem, religion or atheism is a personal thing, nobody can force you, you have a choice, you are born in free country (either that is Greece or the US) and you can believe in god, allah, the spaghetti monster, satan or science. I absolutely adored this video. Im Hellenic myself and the Theoi have helped me work through so much in my life. I’m getting help for mental illness, I feel happier, my grades are improving and i’m becoming more motivated to stay healthy. The practice has lead me to so much comfort and for me was much better than atheism. I recommend to anyone to try spirituality if it sparks their interest. Its hard to believe starting out. You will feel like you are talking to no one, but as time goes on you will feel Their presence.

I do not want to judge these people nor I would actually consider them that their pagan religion is actually the cause of this. But the truth is. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life my friends. You see, when did you ever seen Poseidon in actual person? No one, Zeus? Hades? etc? No one. You need to stop worshipping false gods and false prophets in order to go to heaven. Jesus died for us on the cross and rose again in the third day according to scripture. There are also lots of Christian philosophers that can tell you that Jesus actually is the key because, no one cannot see God nor can communicate with him because you do not have connection with God. That is the problem. And anyone who says there is no such thing as God. Look, this is my proper script. You either ignore it or respect it. I respect what you believe, but in my thoughts you are believing in wrong prophecies, wrong gods, wrong religion and most importantly not showing true love. God is love, the judge and most importantly he understands people where they come from. Not to mention he heals the sick, poor. We cannot see him because like we said he does not force people to what they should believe or what they shouldn't that is why Jesus is the God of love. The son of God.

As a kid I thought all Greeks still believed in the Gods. I grew up watching Xena and Hercules so that's where my interest in Greek mythology started. I think it's wonderful that there are still people who believe.

i love this. religion also isn't always just about worship, but can be a way of feeling connected to your culture and ancestors too. i find it weird that Greece can protect the ruins of temples and monuments and yet reject the beliefs they were erected for.

Because we Greeks were one of the first peoples to adopt Christianity and were also the greatest missionaries of the faith. Our culture is also mostly centered around it. The reason we protect those temples is because they're part of our history.

I have to say this as an indian man who is also spiritual (Sanatana Dharma/Hinduism), i hope that most people especially people who follow abrahamic faiths understand that THIS IS NOT PAGANISM, this is a centuries old ancient culture, tradition and faith. The people of today are following in the footsteps of their ancestors and continuing their traditions and faith. It should not have to be said but i shall say it nonetheless,😂 the same way how people who follow abrahamic faiths truly believe and feel about their own religion, others (Hindu, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc) will also feel the same way about theirs and will have strong unyielding faith aswell. I am glad to read from some comments that ancient greek pantheon has been finally recognised had official religion in Greece after long period of time. Maybe someday I will travel there and make offerings to Zeus, Athena and Poseidon.

Both yes and no, i see some value in a religion being older mainly that it's what comes most naturally to humans that would be practiced first and no because people can still come up with new and better ideas over time, but i see it this way, that you take the old and natural as a template for how a human lives best and then you add in new things as time passes, much like any religion evolves naturally over time when new ideas come, but i guess it's really mostly a matter of perspective.
I kind of see what you're saying but as far as religions go I think Animism is quite a bit older (Think ancestor worship) I think there is evidence of Neanderthals and similar hominids practising religion. Don't get me wrong here, I like the pantheon, and specifically the Homeric gods as an idea but "like" doesn't mean worship. Are you thinking of just culturally adopting some aspects of the old religions or full on 'Believe and Worship' these gods?

For example the 12 gods lived in mound Olympus, and they named the highest mountain in Greece Olympus. But they named many mountains as Olympus. So which one did they mean? Where did the gods live? The answer is that it was figurative. Olympus was a place but no certain place. The same is with the forms. It was a personification just like mount Olympuses, any of them, were "personifications-materialisations" of a place. And there is a river Aherontas in Greece which was supposed to take you to the underworld. But you can walk around it! That was also figurative. Christians would try to degrade the ancient Greek religion as if it was that silly and stupid, to show the new religion's higher value. It was the old differentiation thing, to market something, only in this case through false and bad counteradvertising of the enemy-competitor.

It's better for most Norse Heathens to keep our beliefs to ourselves because the in-fighting between the various Norse Heathen organizations has reached a point where they all say they're "the true church of Norse Heathens" while denouncing all the others as heretics. Thankfully they don't have that problem amongst the Greek polytheists in Greece because they only have one organization, and being so close to actual ancient religious sites, and access to more academic literature, they don't have to improvise as much.
The Poseidon ceremony where they sing hymns, and make offerings of bread, and other food falls into the Hindu idea of prasad, where you put out the offerings on the altar, have a cathartic experience, then you take back parts of the offerings, and consume them in a kind of "holy communion." Of course, the experience is very similar in blots, and sumbles.
What I like about the Greek Gods is that they don't pretend that they are kind like Zeus and Poseidon. They show how they really are unlike the God of Christianity.

A similar movement has been happening in the Scandinavian countries, the rebirth of Asatru, the religion of the Vikings, the worship of Odin , Thor etc: Asatru became an officially recognized religion in Iceland in 1973, and in Denmark in 2003. Asatru temples have recently been built in these countries, the first ones in almost 1000 years.
