    It's interesting that he's talking about not just confidence, but *earned* confidence. It's an important distinction, since a lot of young leaders (and wannabe leaders) will often display *unearned* confidence. And it's harder to lead from that position.

    • @nikolarajkovic4595
      @nikolarajkovic4595 Рік тому +21

      That's not what he is talking about at all. He literally stated that you should fake confidence if you don't have it. Maybe you're indecisive, you will figure it out, but bringing down the morale of the crew will only affect the project negatively. This is a video about how the crew's perception of a director can negatively impact a project. (My comment is not only based on this clip which would have been enough but also on another video when he was talking about this same thing)

      This is a good point tho. You won't get anywhere in a field as an overly confident newbie. People won't want to help you get better if you act like you already know everything! Gotta earn that knowledge and confidence like everybody else

      This bizarre concept of “unearned confidence” sounds like some of the film crew snobbery that I’ve come across in working in LA as a writer, director and actor. - Some people in the film world (the film world is probably 0.001% of the business world, if that.) believe that outsiders who come into the film world are starting at zero miles per hour and have to earn their way to the top of the film world. (Thus “earning” their confidence as a director maybe?) This is absurd hubris. There are people that come into the film industry from other industries that are like trains moving so fast that if someone tried to grab on to hitch a ride their arm would be gone. People come into the film world moving fast long before they even get to LA because they’re not new to business, they’re not new to project management, and they’re not new to human resource management, finance or budget management. They’re just pivoting their pre-existing business resources and skills toward the film industry, and they can leave the film industry whenever they wish because they’re not economically beholden to the film industry. - Earned confidence? - Sounds like more film world snobbery and sour grapes from people who can count tenure as their only stake in the film industry because that is all they have. They certainly can’t count their “success” as any claim in the film industry as they have had zero success in the film industry and they’re not happy about it, so they poo poo people like Fincher who are actually successful. Am I misunderstanding this concept of “earned confidence”? It sounds like film world snobbery and sour grapes to me.

      @@ddpppbd Can't speak for him but David Fincher explained it perfectly in the clip
      Imagine a crew of 20-40 people looking at you for guidance because you're the director and that's your film, and you don't know what to do. Or even a coach of a football team or whatever.
      Sometimes that apply in everyday's relationships too. A group or friend or even a girlfriend would rather someone take a decision rather than somebody not know what the fuck to do or where to go when you hang out. I don't know if that's a good thing, but that's how we're made unfortunately

    I dunno. Some people look and seem more speculative or interrogative when they're projecting uncertainty.
    "Gosh, I don't know. What do you think?" from them would sound less like "I don't know what I'm doing," and more like "I need you to be ready when I figure it out."
    Sometimes it even comes across as "I've made a value judgement about you and am confident that it will pay off."

      @@lbchumaWell said! I should say also that there are many filmmakers that are collaborative. MIke Leigh doesn't give any scripts, just outlines, because he wants the actors to improvise and be spontaneous. One of the greatest names in comedy, Armando Iannucci (showrunner of Veep), always works with a partial script and encourages actors to improvise also. I think that's an important part of comedy in particular.
