Now, I don't know who threw that bottle but that person is fucking legend. I submit to you that, henceforward, this comrade shall be christened The Unknown Punker. I share this tale in his or her honor.
I was at both shows. The first night House of Pain opened and was booed off stage. The second night Ice-T and Body Count opened and played "Cop Killer" which at the time had a lot of controversy around it and cops where all over the place. Both shows were great.
So House of Pain takes the stage first…bouncing around to their intro tune, "House of Pain is in effect, y'all…the House of Pain is in effect." Meanwhile, the crowd is pumping their fists and chanting, "Hey ho, let's go!" These rabid chants from Ramones fans nearly drowned out the House of Pain's performance---but not quite. You could still hear that, in fact, the House of Pain was still in effect… And, that's when I saw the first water bottle get tossed on-stage. And, then another!
Too this day, my daughter still has the autograph, has several photos with Joey, and has attended every celebration for Joey Ramone....she has met every Ramone, including DeeDee and Johnny....she also has a pic with Rodney KROQ and Joey in the same pic!!!!!!!!!!! She interviewed DeeDee Ramone - 3 days before his death, on tape!!!!!!!!!!!
In 1992 KROQ had just gone from being a radio station with strong alternative roots to one that was blatantly commercial---even going so far as to play music by House of Pain simply because the music was popular. Since KROQ was promoting this particular concert, they had the bright idea of putting House of Pain on stage, too. Most of us at this Ramones concert were not amused by any of this.
But in an unfortunate display of courage, the House of Pain remained on stage, still in effect, refusing to bow to our demands. Our ears would continue to be assaulted until midway through the second song (Ahh, that horrific second song! Its chorus is still burned into my memory: Boom shalock lock boom! Boom shalock lock boom!!!). My friends, I share with great satisfaction that right in the very middle of that fucking awful moment, salvation came in a most wondrous way.
I was there ... this all happened... if i remember right Overwhelming Colorfast opened the show then house of pain came on...and exited early... the cool thing was while they were tearing down house of pains stage setup and putting up the Ramones setup, the venue played Jerry was a Racecar Driver by Primus on CD and everyone went full on nutz with a full on mosh pit. Subsequently I went to the next years Lollapalooza and saw Primus headline and a moshpit broke out to Danny Elfmans Pee Wee Big Adventure soundtrack before they took the stage.... which was quite a surreal moment.
