- This English version of the Yoga Vasishta Sara (THE ESSENCE OF YOGA VASISHTA) is based
on a translation made by Swami Sureshananda, an old
devotee of Bhagavan, who has translated several
works of Bhagavan as well as the Yoga Vasishta Sara into
Malayalam.

Every night in deep sleep, there is an absolute bareness of all the senses: THE FEELING OF EXISTING, IS NOT THERE. All the questions and all the answers, were never asked and never answered. "No one went crazy." No one existed naked, alone, with nothing." No one, was without food, without water, clothing, shelter, security. What need for fulfillment was there in deep sleep?..... ZERO.
Now that I "see the deep sleep", at this very moment, it is SEEN, that absolutely nothing/no one, was with me. But this "with me", is not preterit; this "with me", is now that it is SEEN, that in the deep sleep there was no "me" eseity. The sensation of "I", the sensation of myself, is absent. How do I know now that the sensation of "I" was absent in deep sleep? Because this sensation of "I", now, in wakefulness, is also absent, because deep sleep, is now also present in wakefulness. This sensation "I" that I now say I witness in wakefulness, is a sustained superimposition, by the presence now, in wakefulness of deep sleep that underlies this "with me" where there was no "I" eseity.
This "with me" that is named in the absence of "I", in deep sleep, is not a something, it is not a someone, it is not a how, it is not a where, it is not a nothing. The "time of this with me" from the present absence that can name "this with me" is always Now.
I neither saw nor heard...nor felt... There was no desire. There was no thirst for me. There was no universe. There were no qualities. there were no attributes. There was no birth state. There was no creator and no creation. There was no absolute principle or manifestation. There were no words. I did not call myself "I". There was no "I." No one had ever addressed me as either born or unborn. Who could have been addressed by whom, when what is now called "I" was not there?
Now that one can SEE the absent presence of this "I" in deep sleep, is it not here that all suffering ceases? Is it not the beatific GRACE that instantly dissolves all this "born state", with the whole package that brings the pain of feeling "I am this sufferer" who begs for Divine clemency, so that his tormented existence may cease?
In this simple, instantaneous recognition of "this absence of "I", which names this "with me" in deep sleep, is the greatest simplicity that frees the human being from suffering, and how easy it is also to overlook it, and enter into the infinite and illusory complexities of the "I".

Change our point of reference to the non-dualistic, sound (dreamless) sleep state, from the dualistic, waking (dream) state of consciousness ...then we are nearer to the Turiya Avastha state...

Poor pronunciation of Sanskrit terms and words is sad! 😢 Unfortunately, no foreigner can pronounce Sanskrit correctly!
