Hyundai i30N DCT review - a back road weapon!🔥

- I was lucky enough to attended a drive day with Hyundai, experiencing some of their latest cars. This is the first of a few of the cars I got to film. This is actually my second review of the new I30N, however the previous car was a manual, so it was good to give the DCT a try!

The DCT gearbox is pretty sensational. Ride is firm in N mode but with the adaptive dampers you just push that into normal and you have the perfect set up. This facelift model is far more premium (I’ve came from 4 years ownership of the original I30N) and as I say, the DCT is the way to go for me. The N Grin shift button giving you full beans and additional bhp for 20 seconds, is cool. The N Power shift is another nice addition. Fabulous car. Really is.
Yea I made reference that I would ideally place the dampers in a softer setting but it was still a decent drive even in its stiffest mode. It’s a great car though for sure, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to someone looking for a decent hot hatch. I think I’d choose the manual but there’s not much in it for me really…
May I ask what was the fuel economy on highway and city? thanks

Best car I've ever driven. Made my poor reliable golf r seem dull and just not that good really. All power to Hyundai. Hyundai next on my list. Even base models looks good.
My 23 year old lad has owned his manual i30n for nearly three years and absolutely loves it ..he isn't in the market to replace it but has a mate with the dct gearbox who really likes it..it is a great car... bit thirsty on the fuel side if driven spiritly....they sound nice...handle really well....in N mode its a bit to harsh for me...both my lad and me would certainly tell anyone to give this car consideration.....Great review Gary

It’s a well sorted gearbox isn’t it. Up there with the likes of VW / BMW 👍🏻👍🏻

Not sure if you would have noticed,but did you notice this engine is much much stronger than the pre face lift model ? Yet Hyundai still claim the same amount hp and tourqe figures.
Dyno results prove otherwise, people getting 300hp out of box which is always welcome 😏
It did feel quicker than the 276bhp that’s for sure. They’ve done a great job with this car though, I really enjoyed it!

Haha thanks Adam! I think your Yaris will hold up better in terms of residuals though! But, this I30N will feel a bit more grown up and obviously offers more practicality. I really enjoyed it though 👍🏻
@@CarFocused Yeah very true about the value.....the 130N though,offers drama, sound and thrills by the looks of it ! The GR is mega fun when you're on it... can be a tad lack lustre in the everyday boring commute......sometimes !

Swap the P-zeros for michelin pilot sport 4s and the grip in everyday driving is incredible. Sometimes miss my old i30n but the DCT is a LOT of fun :)
I can imagine a set of Michelins handling the greasy conditions that I had much better. Still had a lot of fun though 👌🏻

@@richardgp5691 any regrets or are you glad you went for the DCT? Shifts are super quick, impressive set up 👌🏻
@@CarFocused I do sometimes wish I had my manual again I will be honest. It is a lot easier to speed in the auto as you are disconnected from the shifts. Most of my driving is urban so its so much easier to potter around in the DCT. I would say the FL DCT is up on power than my pre FL by a bit. Will dyno in the future and would not be surprised to see 295-300+ stock. Its rapid :)

Every video I see gets me so hyped to get mine in September. A lot of my mates are quite jealous I'm getting a car like this when they all still drive Corsas and puntos
My son Supershooter.kj has gone on about watching the video and it didn't disappoint. I can't wait for him to get his in September.
Fun car, would take this over the Golf GTi, comes well specc'd for the price & cheaper!
I can’t answer that question because the Golf GTI commands respect and appreciation over a longer period of ownership - so I’d have to have at least a few months with the I30N to see if it’s better or not. We owned a Mk7 Golf GTI performance for 3 years, I thought it was boring after 3 months, but after 2 years I loved it!
Currently got 1 on order. JUST CAN'T WAIT to take the 1st drive in this beautiful car

In Australia it's approximately 4 to 7 months. It's just came up to the 3 month mark. N I order polar white with tinted windows n in the dct transmission. Just clip was awesome. Thanks

Really nice looking car, reminds me of the newer shape Ford Focus. I’m surprised Kia haven’t made a version of this for their medium size hatchback considering they’re more or less the same company
Yea Kia are lacking a little in the performance department. The Stinger GT wasn’t amazing and are they still making the ProCeed GT?
Hyundai has N department just for this. As I remember they started to develop this car in 2014 or 2015 with 2nd Gen i30. But they launched the model with 3rd Gen i30.

😂😂 thanks matey - been busy haha. Yea I had it in its stiffest setting but they are adaptive dampers and can be softened up in the settings 👍🏻
As an n line owner(dct) it's a great daily long drive to work and back. My next car will definitely an N.
Looks a desent hothatch Gary. Price is reasonably too. Think I would prefer a manual. Had a DSG S Tronic for the past five years 😊👍

wish it was rear wheel drive.. would make it almost BMW good.
FWD does add an element of fun too though 😁👍🏻
What is the fuel like in every day driving around town in eco mode?
No idea as I only had it for about an hour!

Haha yes I’d definitely be tailoring a drive mode to tone the suspension down a tad. Be great on a track though 👌🏻
great...but not in the UK's 3rd world road system....the lad is bouncing around in that seat like he's in a washing machine.
I had the suspension in its stiffest setting - this can be adjusted in the custom settings to be softer. It’s an adaptive set up.
@@CarFocused im sure the bucket seat is cossetting, i had a 308gti 270hp bloody loved it...if only our roads were not worse than Kenya's.

Looks a bit to firm a ride for me judging by the bouncing but great motor 👍
I had it in full on N mode mate - you can soften the suspension up in the settings 👍🏻👍🏻

I have a focus st edition. I know you’ve been out and reviewed one of them. I am tempted by one of these. After driving both which one would you say is the better car.. great video and keep up the good work
Mate that’s a very tough question. I probably would have to take them out back to back as they’re both very good cars. I know that’s not the answer you’re looking for 😂 Take one for a test drive maybe and see what you think?
@@CarFocused thanks for the reply. I’m gonna have to drive one. I love my focus st just would like a bit more noise and have a soft spot for the i30N. When went to look they had none in stock last year and orders were about 6 months waiting list. So I got focus edition. I’ll have to go back and have a drive

If you had to choose between is and the new civic type r what would you go with?
I can only compare with the FK8 Type R - and to chose between the two would be hard, but I think the i30N would be the easier car to live with, particularity in DCT form. There’s not much in it when it comes to fun either!

There is a facelifted Focus ST in the pipeline for the channel - not too sure if it will be manual or automatic yet though…

Fun review! I’ve had my DCT base mode for 4 months as my daily doing between 500-700km per week. I’m getting 8.4L/100km weekly. I cruise around in eco mode and hit N custom into manual when I want to have a blast. I prefer to shift myself because you can short shift and be in the right gear at the right time. Auto is amazing when you want to drive flat stick though, it’s just not that practical to do so deep in suburbia. I got the Dark knight, it’s a beautiful colour, I thought white was boring but now see it as plain and simple. Looks nice! If your pondering on the purchase, just go and get one.
How much is ur fuel range with the dct?
@@s5_b856 when it’s full it says 539 to empty from memory.. around that number anyway. No doubt it’s thirsty if you are going to drive it like you stole it all day long but cruising around most of the time keeps the economy very decent. Our family car Mazda CX8 uses more fuel, it’s a 140kw 2.5L.
