My model 94 which is a pre 64 which was made in 1932. It holds 11 rounds 12 with One in the Chamber . It is a rifle with a 26 inch barrel prefers 748 at 38 grains with Sierra 150 grain flat nose game Kings. Good tight groups around three-quarters of an inch at 100 yards. 11ft. deviations. Velocity 2540 this is out of a 26 inch barrel.

I have had great luck with CFE223 powder in 30-30. Good accuracy and velocity.

I would experiment more with the 748 powder. The first three targets were too slow for that rifle.

My Savage 24 with a 2-3/4 scope at 100yds can get 1-1/2” groups w/ 150gr. Spires using W748 : 34.5grs. By far, best combo I ever found after testing many other load combos! Tried 125gr. Spires at 100, also very good, but not longer ranges. Heavier is better!

I would suggest trying a different load for deer hunting. One of the local hunters has had great accuracy using 165 grain Softpoint bullets from his Marlin 336. He loads only two shots. One in the chamber and one in the tube. He uses the Leverevolution gunpowder.
He can take a deer over 200 yards.

Just picked up a 1978 Marlin 336. Will be working up loads this week.

Its nice that people now have the money and the primers to waste on loading expermentation for older cartridges that already been REPEATABLY handloaded AND experimented with before!
BUT it just so happens I like the 30-30 a lot, and have loaded it forever, back when I had the time, money, and components (like primers).
Enjoy your testing! There will people out there that will appreciate your efforts! I still will!
The 30-30 loading seems to be a common "thread" nowadays.
On UTube videos, in the magazines, etc....
Maybe this "push" on the 30-30 is what we need to help put the sport back into hunting?
Instead of trying to hit a deer at 600 or 700 yards away??!!
    (or wound a deer...)

Thanks for watching! I know I could probably just pick a load from the forums or a magazine article that lines up with a load manual and be just fine with this cartridge. But I find 80% of the fun in shooting the work up and getting to know how the gun behaves with different loads.
I got into .30-30 because I was thrilled to find this 336 with good build quality and no silly cross-bolt safety. Now that I’ve got some ammo loaded for it, I can’t wait till rifle season to give it a whirl in the woods!

@TheOutdoorGeneralist Wow, can I identify with that!
Which is why I have bought as many guns in my lifetime.... to experiment with a different caliber in reloading that gun/caliber. I like reloading THAT much!
I'd get something new or different, get the dies... and take off from there!
I have a lot of data and experiences with a lot of "stuff"! I'd work with it, and achieve my goal, get bored and eventually sell off the rifle.
Unfortunately now, I don't have the money to do it anymore.
So, I'm a little jealous seeing everyone else having the fun now!
By the way... I've had nothing but good luck and great accuracy from Marlin rifles. ALL of them with the exception of their Cowboy rifle in the 38-55. (I'm not a cast bullet shooter! Or a very patient one!!)
The 30-30 centerfire was very first cartridge that I hunted, shot with... and eventually at age 14, started my reloading hobby! (I bought a Lee Loader back then).
Once again.... good luck with your endeavors!
      Vote 2nd ammendment!

Looking in all my reloading manuals and I have many. 34.5 is max charge for 30-30 with 150 gr. ??????

  • @marksellers4875
    @marksellers4875 Рік тому

Put your front rest under the frame behind the forend. In every 336 I've shot, that position gave best accuracy and consistency.
I also got my best velocity and accuracy with H335 and Hodgdon LVR. Inch groups at 100 yards were not uncommon.

Hornady ftx160 and Speer Hotcore170 with ACC 2520 at max. lenght, almost max. load out of my 1970 336, both well under 1" at 110 yards (100m)

Use IMR 3031 with 165 and 168 bullets and it’s does good. Not much for velocity. I can’t get groups with 150 bullets. IMR 4895 groups better with the 150’s out of a .308.

Great video dude, only thing is I have 4 reloading manuals I reload 30-30 also. Have not tried the W748 BUT I did look up loads for it and not one of these manuals show a load over 33.6 and that is a MAX load.............Be careful.. 37.9 is way passed the max load.

    • @TheOutdoorGeneralist
      @TheOutdoorGeneralist  Рік тому

Hornady manual shows a max of 38.9 for this bullet.

Yeah, my Hornady manual (digital version, on my phone) shows the same max charge, and you stayed a safe distance below what they list. I do see Mark's point above, as the max values from different component companies (and reloading websites) truly are "all over the chart". I can't help but think that different manufacturer's bullets, cases, powders, & primer combos in THEIR TEST BARRELS influence their recorded pressures, velocities, and max loads. May even be a bit of "cover our asses" from some reloading companies with regards to max loads, for litiguous reasons, loading a potential high pressure round in an older firearm, & etc.. Since the Hornady testing was done on a Model 94 Winchester rifle (with a 20" barrel), I do feel like the velocities we can achieve with their bullets in a "normal" 20" long barrel lever action carbine might be pretty comparable to Hornady's listed velocities. I do wish Hornady (and others) would list pressure values. Be nice to know that, but pressures/velocities are both variable with temps and other environmental factors I probably could not duplicate in a thousand years. I would also say this: I have not had a rifle that I have reloaded for that DIDN"T shoot it's best (for hunting accuracy, YMMV) at below max charge levels. You can either chase velocity, or load for accuracy, most of the time. You choose. If you get both with one load, be VERY grateful.

Dropped a nice Hill Country 10pt last friday shooting my Marlin 30-30 using 150gr Federal HammerDown loads. Right through the front shoulder, DRT. As for your grouping, if those were at 100yds, that would be impressive. The .41 group is what I would take to the woods. But that's just me. Let me recommend a really good channel for ammo testing......Mason Leather. Check him out.

My Marlin shoots best with the 170s. These Marlins routinely shoot tight groups!
