I live in northern California, where it is typically warm and on the dry side. This winter however, refilled all our reservoirs to brimming, and everything in the garden is HAPPY! I have 4 cuttings of Purple Heart that I'm letting root in water, and will plant them in a pot so I can move it inside for the winter. Thank you for all your tips regarding water. I've begun using distilled water for my orchids and they love it - so I'll try it with this plant as well.
Thanks Dennis! They won't grow in the UK outside unless it's summer - the frost and damp of winter will soon kill them off - but indoors they're great as they're very drought tolerant too so not much effort!
Not about wandering Jews, but you made my orchids and me very happy the other day. Friday I went to Tesco for 9am (and there was already a little queue) and I suddenly remembered I forgot to turn on my fan and my ultrasonic fogger. Good thing you did a bit about your smart plugs. 9:30 and my greenhouse was already hitting 28C.
Glad to be useful! They're great gadgets aren't they? Can't believe the extremes of weather we're getting at present. It's like October again today. By the way, I could do with another fogger as those hydrofoggers are just off the scale cost-wise. What's yours like?
I have 2 RAM ones like what Ed has. I inverted a plastic bottle and ran some black conduit tubing and put holes in it so the mist falls over my orchids. Surprisingly it actually works and the orchids seem to like it. I recently bought a small ultrasonic for my Masdevallias but its not as good as the £35 RAM ones.
It is adjustable and when we have those extra hot days I need the extra capacity. Just don't do what I did. I forgot to turn it off on day and when I came in in the morning it was like pea soup in the greenhouse. I could only see a few inches in front of me.
Thank you so much for this video!! I didn't know you can have this plant bushy or trailing depending on personal preference! 🙂 And I needed to know how to prune mine since he's so bushy now.
Glad it was helpful! It's an old video (in UA-cam terms!) so I hope you can find something on Tradescantia that's a bit more up to date that you find useful too. Here's my Tradescantia playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLQKwmNwb1T5DXiTRplXElnYTnJ_TtNC_D.html
These plants are so easy - they're very drought tolerant and can go ages without water. You can either leaves them to trail, or prune them back and bush them out. They're also very easy to propagate by potting up and tips you prune off. Hope you enjoy yours when it arrives.😁
With that particular one you can't really tell what it's going to look like yet with its trails because I personally think you don't have enough in the pot. My Zebrina looks better trailing, but I also have cob web which doesnt trail it spirals instead. I think from the pictures I have seen on Google of purpurea it looks better bushy, it grows outwards rather than downwards.
@@virgilbohall6665 I have one growing up the corner of the greenhouse and it looks great with no interference from me. I hardly ever water it either! 🤣
You can cut right back to the lowest set of leaves - but I'd leave at least one pair of leaves in place so that there is a node to re-sprout from. It might also be an idea to do it in stages - reduce one right down but only reduce others by half or by a third and see how it responds before doing any more pruning. They're pretty tough though so I don't expect you'll have any problems.

My pleasure! This plant really is extremely drought tolerant. Sometimes I begin to winder whether it needs any water at all!🤣
I love these plants and have them all over the yard outside...I will have it as a house plant too, I will keep mine in a bushy form. Great video.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Hey, you're welcome!...yes, as long as you can have them as a houseplant you can always enjoy these beautiful plants : )
I prefer the semi trailing shape you trained the red jewel into. Best of both worlds.
Sounds like a plan!
Same! That red jewel is to die for. I wonder how many cuttings in that one hanging pot shown first. Just beautiful

@@patriciasorchids3999 I'm wondering whether to try a Ram one in my cooler side - although it might just be too large a space at 10 foot by 10 foot.

@@patriciasorchids3999 I was hoping it would work off an Ink Jet controller - so would switch off at a pre-set humidity percentage.
Thank you! Mine has very long trails and I needed to know if I could cut them back or not!
Yes go for it. They’ll sprout from further back.

I Again Jeff, I followed your advice and ordered some online...I'm waiting on this Pallida. I prefer it bushy but trying to trail.

I’ve learned this plant doesn’t like it’s leaves to get wet.

Yeah I agree. Bushy it is!
Setcreasea purpurea!❤❤❤❤🌸
Yeah I hadn't come across this synonym before - but there are so many for Tradescantia.
I have been letting mine trail for about a year now and it's putting on new shoots at the old leaf nodes.
I'd post a picture if I could
Yeah they look great trailing. 😀
@@Grow_Up_Man55 honestly I like them low growing, but I only have three shoots left so I'm letting them grow naturally.

I tend to prefer trailing wander jew.
Yeah I think I do too.
Far better to let it trail imo
My plant trails but needs to be cut back. How far back can you cut it? I have it wrapped around a plant holder AND hanging down. It's waaaay too long.

How do I remove them !!
Remove what from where?
