    About the screws: Zinc is a problem when it comes to contact, as it will oxidize and zinc oxide is an insulator. So stay away from galvanized screws. Brass screws and nuts are your friends. Or even stainless.
    To be precise: The zinc oxide forms on the end of the screws where they contact the paddle. And you don't need much power for it to form within half an hour either. My practice oscillator is 555 based and the cootie (same thing, basically, as a single paddle) was switching the output to the speaker, so not even the 9V battery to the circuit. Went out and bought some brass screws and haven't had to file/clean the contact points again. That was 8 years ago.

    Good show, the advice at the end to go with one side paddle is probably the best advice I have heard about keys.

    Would like to see you build an attenuator for fox hunting if that is possible, like the one you use in some video's. Have a nice day!

    Nice sideswiper key. Used to use one on a Russian-built ship back in the 70s. Way better than a straight key.

      Yes, we should have plugged it in and sent some code. It works flawlessly, every bit as well as my Vibroplex Racer and 1,000 times better than those 3D printed plastic paddles.

    I'm trying to decide if it would take me longer to make the key or pound out a QSO in Morse since I no longer remember the entire alphabet. 😉

    I have a G90 with the latest firmware and I'm pretty sure it has type A and type B

    • @davewhite7679
      @davewhite7679 2 роки тому +2

      Yes, the G-90 internal keyer (like many radios) offers both Iambic A and B keying options. Unfortunately my IC-7300 does not. So instead of relearning the other Iambic style I switched to a single paddle key.

    I'd like a link to who is selling plastic paddles for $20? I sold a few 3D printed ones in the $35-40 range

    • @davewhite7679
      @davewhite7679 2 роки тому +1

      I bought the 2 paddle plastic key 2 years ago during a $10 Thanksgiving promotion, so I believe it was actually a $30 key on eBay at that time.

      @@davewhite7679 Never a doubt just wondered if you had a deal I did not know about. Thanks! Great plan on the file. Wonder if Icom could change firmware to add A keying? I have an 817ND myself and I've only used CW on air once. Embarrassed to try again here.

      "Parks On The Air" has brought a lot of us back out of the closet with our rusty CW skills. Give it a try. Switching to a paddle key and utilizing some rig memory storage took my CW game to a whole new comfort level.

    Brilliant! Why spend weeks choosing a flexible "blade" and making a good looking handle for it when the combination is already waiting for you where you buy your nail touch-up products. You do keep your nails scrupulously groomed, don't you?
