Intel Arc A770: Performance Comparison of PCIE 3.0 vs PCIE 4.0 - Is PCIE4 really necessary?

  • Welcome back to another video people ;) this time we will be testing if PCIE4 does give any performance boost on Intel Arc A770...
A few words about PCIE3 and PCIE4... PCIe is the primary interface used to connect the graphics card to the motherboard. PCIe 3.0 was introduced in 2010 and offered a bandwidth of 8GT/s per lane. PCIe 4.0 was released in 2017 and increased the bandwidth to 16GT/s per lane. This means that PCIe 4.0 has twice the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, making it a potential game-changer for graphics card performance.
    But does it really?!
To test the performance difference of PCIE3 and PCIE4 on the Intel Arc A770 graphics card, I ran two specific benchmark tests and a game.
The results of the benchmark tests were as expected... On PCIe 3.0, the Intel Arc A770 delivered excellent gaming performance, with smooth frame time in Returnal with high-quality graphics. However, when I switched to PCIe 4.0, the performance only increased by a 1-2% so replacing your AMD lets say PCIE3 board with a PCIE4 won't actually be a good idea in my opinion and same goes for intel (new boards have PCIE4 anyways).
Save the money and use it to upgrade something else ;)
    Superposition Score on PCIE4: gcdnb.pbrd.co/...
    PCIE3 Score (better)?: gcdnb.pbrd.co/...

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5950x - REBAR ON

There's even "modern" hardware that's still 3.0, like a Ryzen 5 5500 for example that came out in 2022 and only supports 3.0 (although it still supports RE-BAR
Although there's also older hardware that supports 4.0 like the Ryzen 3000 series from 2019 (dunno if they support RE-BAR tho, edit: yep Ryzen 3000 does as well)

just putting it out there for anyone wondering.
i have a PCIe Gen 4 motherboard, paired with a Gen 3 riser cable (because of older gen GPU), but now i paired with the Arc A770.
Stability on every startup is vague to say the least, i have to fiddle at least 30 min to get a display output and/or completely reset BIOS and force set PCIe setting to Gen 3 because of this riser.
im getting a Gen 4 riser cable to see if the problem finally goes away and give me more stability and less headache.

I got a PCIE4 riser on a PCIE4 MB and have to set it to PCIE3 since it doesnt work. Must be something else then with the riser as I have it set at 3 and it works fine. On pcie4 I dont get any display output.

Very interesting. Im using an A770 LE for quite a while now with pcie3, combined with an i5 10600 non k on 1440p and im very very happy with it. Actually i have much less issues with the Intel card than i had with the previous ones driver. So far so good and comparing prices when i got it and even now...i dont see anything here that has a better price / performance and is 1440p capable

If Intel keeps updating the drivers we'll have a very future proof card thanks to its 16gb, unlike Nvidia charging 400 bucks for a card with 8gb

How is ARC performance impacted when limited to just 8 or 4 PCIE 4.0 lanes? I'm deciding between the Ryzen 7600 CPU and the 8600g CPU. The only reason the 8600g is in the running is to use the integrated RDNA 4 GPU for VR apps the ARC won't run, and it doesn't have a full 16 lane PCIE bus for dedicated GPUs.

Can you make a video that clearly establishes the cpu overhead that the arc cards require? When using a midrange cpu like the 3600 with an arc a750 the performance tanks sometimes in cpu intensive scenes. Mind you, the cpu is not being used 100% so it's not a bottleneck for sure but some kind of driver overhead issue
