  • I travelled to Central Illinois to find Trachymyrmex septentrionalis, the northern fungus-farming ant. This population is one of the northernmost ranges of fungus growing ants on the planet, only being contested by another population of this same species on Long Island, New York.
On top of searching for Trachymyrmex, it's also looking like a really good time to find some Camponotus queens, and plenty of other amazing ant species. Will I be successful?

I think my favorite genera of northern ants has to be a tie between temnothorax and Strumigenys

Thankfully Illinois doesn't really have N. flavipes outside of some small populations in Chicago, I think. But yeah, I'm always happy to show off more species from more places here, especially when they're cool fungus growers 😎

Whenever I travel to a new place I try to get out into habitat, even if I'm not expecting to find anything special. That said, I don't have any connections in Maryland, so I don't see myself ending up there anytime soon.

Hello, would you like to do a collab sometime?
I'm in Cali and I absolutely love ants. I mostly keep camponotus and other kinds but I wanna go down to Arizona with you and find some ants and go black lighting for honeypots. If you are interested let me know! Thanks.

I believe you are talking about Pheidole tysoni, maybe Pheidole hyatti, but I do not know hyatti’s range.
