Thank for you for this demonstration. Your explanations are simple but still cover the details and common mistakes. I'm going to make one today with your (and my dad's) help.
I’m just getting into leather working, thanks for all the information in your videos. I find making leather projects relaxing and love the outcome of what I make versus store bought!!
Hey Chuck I’m working on a serious budget so at times my quality is not up to yours, but still wanted to say thank you for passing on the knowledge. So thank you!
Thanks, Chuck! Another Great tutorial . This is my next project, typed 'making a rifle' sling in the search box and was so happy this was the fist video that popped up!
Sheesh you make it look so easy but I do like the simple pattern and ease of assembly I will definitely try my hand at making some of these for my friends rifles thanks again for another great project!
I see a way to complicat it for a better out come. Have you tried making it with two main bodies stitched together, leave opening for adjustment strap, so adjustment strap goes between main body pieces. Years down the road the end of adjustment strap will not be flopping around.
I found you when I first started getting into leather working about three weeks ago, i thought this was an intricate artform, you've taught me it's fairly easy. Like how many tencqies have the same base, thanks.
First I want to say I will tell you a video they are definitely awesome I am working with leather and I saw this video and I'd like to make one but I don't know what size Chicago Screws that you are using you did not mention that so if you can get back to me on that I'd really appreciate it thank you
Hello, The advantages with Chicago screws is they are removable and very easy to install. Rivets will give you a permanent hold if that is desired and are more cost effective. Thanks!
It is necessary to use the Chicago screws unless you install the sling swivels when you make the sling. The swivels have a loop that the sling passes through.
Good thing I found this video on Google! I was hoping to know how to make a sling! I have big Nerf gun and I want to make a sling for it, so this is something very useful to know! #USEFUL
Hello, can you do a video about thinning dyes to be able to achieve a lighter color? I would like to know if I can thin a dye to a lighter color and dip dye vs using an airbrush and multiple passes to achieve the shade I want. Airbrushing does not seem to penetrate very well. When I bend a strap around a buckle bar, it appears lighter as the leather stretches, where dip dying penetrates better, and does not change as the leather moves. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
Hi Eric, that's a great idea for a video! We will add it to the list. For the time being, we recommend trying to use Leather Dye Reducer from Fiebings which is formulated to thin or dilute the color of dye. You can find it here. www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/27341/001/112 Hope that helps!
Where are the other comments? Chuck, do you need to wet the Bridle leather before stamping? I have never worked with it before, always used natural veg tan.
Hello, Great question! Bridle leather does not require water to stamp because of the waxes and tallows. At about 14:50 in the video Chuck explains it just a little bit. Thanks!
Hi Thinus, We would recommend slicking all sides/tips - for the sake of keeping the video at a manageable length we didn't show all of the steps completely. Hope that helps!
I have a question for you sir. I have two leather rifle slings that I have adjusted to be longer. Both have bends or "memory" where they use to be bent. Is there any way to get the unwanted bends or kinks out of the leather straps?
I am sorry to say that I don’t know of a way to smooth out the bends. Once bent the fibers tend to expand/contract and I’m not familiar with a way to remove those. This is a common problem and I wish I had an answer for you.
Hi there, If the flesh side is dyed, we would recommend a top coat to keep the dye from bleeding. If it's not dyed but it's rough, you can slick it using gum tragacanth or Tokonole and a glass burnisher or bone folder.
Weaver Leathercraft excellent, yes both sides are dyed. I am using atom wax for my topcoat. You are saying I am good to use the Atom wax on both sides of the leather?
Hi Matthew, This is veg tan bridle leather and you don't have to case this specific leather to stamp it but you definitely can! It holds the impression nicely for stamps - we wouldn't recommend carving it though. Hope that helps!
If you want a permanent hold we recommend using Loctite or similar super glue but if you want to be able to open the screws again just use a white glue such as Fiebings Leathercraft Cement. www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/27342/001/120
You've done it to me again Chuck! 2am and I want to jump up and start making one lol

Such a great instructor. Thank you for making this look so easy! You're a pro bro. Love the channel.
I appreciate that! You're welcome.

HI Phil,
Thanks for watching! The chicago screw post size we used is 3/8". Hope that helps!
Awesome
What size are the Chicago Screws
Would love to see a video on making a guitar strap
Hi Johnny,
We'll link the video below on the guitar strap!

Really appreciate these tutorials! But why do you use Chicago screws on this one instead of rivets? What is the advantage/disadvantage of each?
Hello,
The advantages with Chicago screws is they are removable and very easy to install. Rivets will give you a permanent hold if that is desired and are more cost effective.
Thanks!
It is necessary to use the Chicago screws unless you install the sling swivels when you make the sling. The swivels have a loop that the sling passes through.
How thick is that leather?
Good thing I found this video on Google! I was hoping to know how to make a sling! I have big Nerf gun and I want to make a sling for it, so this is something very useful to know! #USEFUL

Hey reminds my of Steve Irwin
Can you show how to set up a pattern and how to make shoulder straps for a backpack ?
Hey Randy! We will absolutely add it to the list. Thanks for watching.
Where are the other comments? Chuck, do you need to wet the Bridle leather before stamping? I have never worked with it before, always used natural veg tan.

OK, thanks
@@WeaverLeatherSupply Is stamping the limit or can you cut patterns and use bevellers etc like you might do on a veg tan piece of leather?
I noticed that you don't do any edge work on the tip of your straps, but only on the long sides. Is there a reason for this?
Hi Thinus,
We would recommend slicking all sides/tips - for the sake of keeping the video at a manageable length we didn't show all of the steps completely. Hope that helps!

How do you determine how long to make the gusset?
Hi Josie,
Are you referring to the tooled part of the rifle sling?
@@WeaverLeatherSupply yes sir.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply I would also like to know too!
I would also like to know. Please share
I made one out of natural Veg & dyed black. How would you recommend I finish the flesh side?
Hi there,
If the flesh side is dyed, we would recommend a top coat to keep the dye from bleeding.
I would really love to attempt to make this. The link to the pattern doesn't work.
Here is a updated link to the downloadable pattern.... www.weaverleathersupply.com/collections/rifle-sling
Thank you!!!
I use cereal boxes to make my templates, not as flimsy as paper and its easy to write or draw on
That's not a bad idea. File folders work too.
How do I get a tool list for the various projects? Is it listed anywhere?
Hi there,
The first link in the video descriptions will take you to a page with all of the tools and materials used in the video.
Great video! What thickness leather did Chuck use in this video?
Thank you, David! Chuck used a 9/10 oz. English Bridle leather
Is that chrome or veg? Did you case the leather?
Hi Matthew,
This is veg tan bridle leather and you don't have to case this specific leather to stamp it but you definitely can! It holds the impression nicely for stamps - we wouldn't recommend carving it though. Hope that helps!
Sweet!
What is the leather thickness
Hi Draven,
This is a 9/10 oz. English Bridle leather.
Do you use 5-6 oz. leather for the sling?
Hi there,
This was a 9/10 oz. English Bridle that was used for this project. Thanks!
Hmm... how about making a grid, or using grid paper? That would be way easier, in my belief, anyway.
You can absolutely use grid paper! I use regular paper for videos just because it shows up on the camera better.
thank you gr8
What glue do you recommend for Chicago screws?
If you want a permanent hold we recommend using Loctite or similar super glue but if you want to be able to open the screws again just use a white glue such as Fiebings Leathercraft Cement. www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/27342/001/120
Weaver Leathercraft thank you 🙏
Locktite blue is removable, located red is forever ish. I use Elmer's wood glue as my white glue for leather.
got me at straight in my shoe 🤣
...jeez... thats an idea for a birthday present...
Haha. I thought I was the only one who hates those plugs.
Tony Alexander your not.i chase them all over my shop
If I'm using my rotary punch, I put making tape over the central hub on both sides. It catches them nicely.
Yes sir.
Chuck says cut it 6 inch the pattern reads 7 lol
Chuck
What the heck happened to the focus at 3:18:00? It got tough to watch. Great video otherwise.
