      I would suggest adding what network protocol (Thread, WiFi, Ethernet) the Matter product uses and make it clear on the main page if the support is direct in the device or via a proprietary hub. But great video! Love everything you do.

      @@FooHenky Yea, that's one of the things I mentioned in that last video on Matter back in January. The Aqara hubs will double in HomeKit like that after converting to Matter. Some devices may loose functionality in HomeKit, like the security system attribute. This is because security systems are not yet supported by Matter unfortunately.

    I think a full home smart setup with different devices and cross platform video would be so helpful for everyone to understand how it can be done and how many different brand products they can mix and match.

    For many others that still confused Matter and how related to WiFi, Thread, Zigbee, etc., I often use the example of the following: WiFi, Thread, Zigbee, etc. just like different line of buses, takes the signals from device to devices and hubs, Matter is like a ticket that is designated to which bus to ride on to get to destination. Thanks for another great video!

    Great video! The thing I'm most concerned about when it comes to Matter is the lack of originality. Manufacturers who use Matter are less incentivized to add support for features that are platform specific i.e. HomeKitSecure Video etc. We see this a lot in Apple Home, but it's far more common in the other smart home platforms. As Matter grows, I'm assuming it will build out more complex functionality, but for now, if you're all-in on HomeKit, I'm not sure Matter matters...much.

  • @maxking3

    Matter will become the dominant Retrofit consumer standard.
    But I am glad, that I have built my house with a much more professional and reliable standard called KNX.
    30y on the market, 7000 devices from 500 vendors, reliable like a swiss watch and made for decades of operation.
    We built 17 years ago and today my house is showing up as one KNX device with 117 entities in Home Assistant: That’s 35 switched lights, 15 dimmed lights, 4 RGBW LED strips, 24 blinds, 20 under-floor heating valves… all KNX and with gateways to Alexa and Homekit.
    It is a real shame, that there are 100s of UA-camrs doing the Zigbee-amateur hour, while KNX gets nowhere the attention it deserves.
    Anyway. Let’s see what Matter will bring in the consumer space. Can’t wait to play with a KNX/Matter gateway in the near future.

    Thanks for the update. From what I can tell, for me as a user, Matter is for "commodity" smart home products and acts the same as HomeKit but I can also add the devices to Alexa or Google Home if I wanted to. So, if I'm all-in on Apple, then it doesn't really do much more for me. It seems it's probably of more value to the manufacturers of basic smart home kit, like those no-name brands, as they can now sell their stuff as Matter certified rather than having to get HomeKit + Alexa + Google Home certifications. However, if they want to do anything new or innovative they'll need to wait for it to be standardized by Matter beforehand, which favors the big guys or the bottom feeders and make differentiation tough. Hmm.

    Well I had a bunch of Meross bulbs and plugs fail on me recently and I just couldn't be bothered dealing with them and decided to buy some more Nanoleaf bulbs. Googled and noticed some stores had them at half price. They're clearing the old non-Matter bulbs. I have no intention of using a different ecosystem so 9 bulbs and a light strip later, I saved a fortune!!!
    For me Matter is going to give me more things to have in my Apple Home natively, rather than me wanting Google or Alexa as well. Hanging out for Govee to get switch their outdoor lights to Matter. I want those for my new house!

    Thank you Shane. Just wondering if you have tried to go back and factory reset and then re-add any of the Matter products that gave you trouble in the beginning? For instance, if I’m not mistaken, you had trouble taking some existing Eve products that were not originally matter certified and upgrading their firmware then adding them via Matter. Have you tried doing that with any old Eve HK products that you had not already upgraded the firmware back in the early days of matter? I am curious to see if the experience has gotten easier with manufacture and Apple updates that have happened since then.

From within google home or homekit or these universal matter apps. Why has noone talked about the problem of google home or homekit not being able to create gradient light colors? I bought philips hue because there app was amazing. But now i cant connect anything else to philips hue. I can put it in google home but whats the point if I have cool ambient strips and underglow everywhere? Could you please help me out or tell me if that will ever be a thing? With matter could I put light bulbs inside philips hue app? Thanks, Austin :)

    • @ShaneCreates

      Thanks for watching! It's not bad. The Onvis app is not very good. The Onvis Plug will not give you power monitoring like the Eve Energy. Hey Shane, appreciate the video as always my guy. I myself I’m in the process of standing up an Apple Home in a pre-existing Alexa smart home. While most of my lighting is now Phillips Hue, I have had trouble with a recent Govee M1 Matter light strip purchase. After multiple attempts to get it to connect to HomeKit, I finally gave up and just added it to my Homebridge. I previously had to TP link Tapo matter smart plugs that were working just fine but for the past few days, they have been unresponsive and HomeKit. After fighting for with them for a few hours I gave up and put them in my Homebridge server as well. Both products are working fine in there. I am so hopeful matter will bridge the gap between all of these different ecosystems. In my case however I can't help but think that may be my issues because I couldn't help myself and installed developer Beta on my Apple TVs, HomePods, and my iPhones. so my issue is probably my own 🙄. Thanks again, and have a good one!

      Thanks for the comment. Of course, running betas could always present unexplainable issues... • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! It really will depend on what you want to pay. My opinion: Lutron Serena is the best, but you will certainly pay for it... they also require a hub. Eve Motion Blinds and Smart Wings are a good "mid-tier"... not as expensive as Lutron but still lots of customization options. Then something like Ikea or SwitchBot (retrofit) will be the most affordable but you won't have near the options and/or quality.
      Smart Wings has the first Matter shades coming out (while we're on the topic of Matter) and I'll be releasing a video on that very soon FYI.

    Matter's been going well for me. I'm using WiZ (which is another subbrand of Signify, alongside Hue) lights and they work just as well as they did with Homebridge. The only thing I have to complain about is that for some reason ControllerForHomeKit can't "load accessory information" for these, and I'm unable to save their Matter code for this reason. Otherwise they've been flawless. Very happy these work with Matter, and I'd name them the best lights you can get for what would be into USD $15.

    • @tdrg_
      @tdrg_ 11 місяців тому

      Also props to the software team @ Signify. The WiZ app is awesome, even though I use the Home app 99.9% of the time and only use the manufacturer's apps for firmware updates.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  11 місяців тому

      Nice, thanks for sharing. I have not used any of the Wiz bulbs yet with Matter. I have seen similar behavior with a few other Matter products in the Controller for HomeKit app. I think the developer is aware. This may rely on the manufacturer and not the developer, but If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend leaving feedback to the developer in case it's something they can fix.

      Thanks for the support! A couple of things you can do to check if a device supports Matter. In the Apple Home app, go into the device settings that your are checking on. If you see an option that says "Turn On Pairing Mode," then you know that is a Matter accessory.
      Additionally, you can go into your iPhone Settings app > General > Matter Accessories. Here you should see Matter accessories that you have added to your setup. Hope this helps.

    • @GregEva
      @GregEva 10 місяців тому

      You'll have to check with the manufacturer. Some thread products will eventually get over-the-air updates to allow for Matter over Thread, however other companies are only updating their hub for Matter over Ethernet/WiFi, where the Thread based communication would then not be Matter. Companies will also adapt their plans over the coming year, so certain planning things will likely find that it's not feasible, and others not planning might change their minds and do it.

      Aqara said the G2H Pro will gain Matter support, but I don't think it's received the update yet. When it does, yes, you will likely loose some functionality. Only the hub portion will support Matter (cameras are not supported by Matter yet). And like the M2 Hub, you will probably loose the security system feature in Apple Home since that is not supported either. But most of the child accessories (those that matter supports) will support Matter through the bridge.

    • @GregEva
      @GregEva 10 місяців тому

      It's not really that confusing if you break the constituent parts out. Matter is a connectivity and interoperability standard (which operates over Internet Protocol) - the way things speak together. The network that is used for this connectivity can vary. Putting light switches and running control over WiFi is a bad idea as it is not fit for purpose like Thread is; but if all that you have is a router, a WiFi hotspot, and a smart home controller, then maybe WiFi is appropriate if you'll only one or two devices. Think of Thread as a fit for purpose standalone mesh network for your smart home which gets stronger as you build it out, and does not send signals or connect to your WiFi.

  • @ios_lu

    One hope that I put on Matter is about the offline capabilities, and I wish you could test this extensively in the future. My main problem is that I built my HomeKit home automation onto Philips Hue platform and it's really frustrating how unreliable and slow it is, and in certain hours it's unavailable probably because Philips is updating their servers. If I want to make a snack 1am, I have to use my iPhone as flashlight because I know the Hue system won't work. As expensive as it's gonna be to replace all my lights, this will come eventually, the only question is whether Matter will be the solution, and which brand should I go for.

      This is interesting, as that's not my experience with Hue at all. I'd regard it as one of the most reliably platforms available today. Nearly all your operations should be running locally in any case with the bridge and homekit (assuming you have a home hub?), but there certainly aren't nightly maintenance outages like you describe. Have you tried digging in more to those reliability issues to determine if there isn't something else going on?

      @@andyhume874 I use the Hue Bridge, yes. I don't know exactly which generation, but it's not very new. Most of my lights are zigbee, with some few being Bluetooth, I have around 30+ Philips Hue ceiling lights and a couple of other different lights like LED strips from other brands, which are mostly Bluetooth. The Philips ones (including the Bluetooth ones) are the only that stop working, almost every day in the same hour. And also Philips is one of the few that stops working completely if I enable that HomeKit Accessory Security feature, that forbids them to log data to Baidu. I tried to use it through Homeassistant and through Homebridge without any improvements. Maybe my Bridge is defective, but what about the BT lights? I don't even want to start talking about the Hue app, how it messes my HomeKit catalog.

Takes like a day to get everything going again. I know the thread network can take time to build etc. but frankly read the marketing material from these companies, it doesnt say that. All you always hear on troubleshooting/support is reseting the devices and reconnecting which is just a joke. This is not fixing the problem ... I can't just reboot everything and reconnect every other day and rebuilt automations etc.

      @ShaneCreates  11 місяців тому

      That's a solid point, however I think this has been a factor long before Matter... at least regarding Apple Home/HomeKit. There are number of Apple Home products (without Matter) that have extra features that are not available in the Apple Home app and only accessible in the manufacturer's app. Some manufacturer's do a better job than others at trying to get those features accessible in the Apple Home app.

    • @GregEva
      @GregEva 10 місяців тому

      This will never happen. It's a problem as old as time itself. The company adopts a standard but they add some features that don't exist in the standard so need to figure out how to allow you to use them. An example would be Eve Smart Switch which can program on/off schedulers in the switch itself (not on the home automation controller). It's great to have that feature, but it doesn't exist in Matter. At the same time, it isn't a frequent thing that you do, so you should just get over it. If it was something really common, that's where lobbying the standards body can help to get the standard enhanced for things once not possible (ie; color control).
